期待の新作『グラヴィタス~荘厳なる刻』をリリースし、スティーヴ・ハウに変わる注目の新ギタリスト、サム・コールソンを迎え行われた新生エイジアの2014年の日本ツアー。その前半戦となった6月17日の名古屋公演と6月18日の大阪公演を、オリジナルマスターから超高音質オーディエンス録音で終演後のアナウンスまで完全収録した驚きのタイトルが登場です! 両日共にマッシヴなサウンドがレンジの広い透明な音域の中から耳元にどんどん攻め込んでくる魅惑の収録音となっており、ハードタッチな音に変わった新生エイジアの魅力を最高値で届けてくれる極上の収録内容を誇っております。名古屋での公演は前回同様に1曲目から観客総立ちになり、大阪も再結成後のライブとしては初めて観客が冒頭から総立ちとなって盛り上がったのは、この熱い” 名阪2DAYS “に参戦された方ならばまだ記憶に新しいところでしょう。これはそんな今回のツアー前半戦がパーフェクトな音質で耳元に届いてくる4CDプレス盤・ピクチャーディスク仕様の絶品タイトルです !

本タイトルの録音者は、前回2012年エイジアXXXツアーでの名古屋公演『LIVING A LEGACY (Virtuoso-143/144)』を怒涛の超高音質で収録して話題を呼んだ、当店のお客様には既にお馴染み「西日本最強のテーパー」さんです。まず初めにディスク1と2に収録された名古屋公演から御紹介したいと思いますが、彼から直接戴いた録音データによるとここで聴ける名古屋公演は2階指定席・最前列中央からの録音で、大変面白いことに前述の2012年XXXツアー名古屋を収録した『LIVING A LEGACY』と同じ位置からの録音なのだそうです。録音者も同じ、録音位置も同じ、そして恐らく使用した録音機材も同じなので音の傾向も似ている訳ですが、これは即ち『LIVING A LEGACY』同様に全ての音域を過不足なく拾った、バランスも完璧な音像という事を意味しています。ライブハウスならではのデッドな響きも心地良く、2階席でありながら距離的なロスが一切ないのも奇跡的で、ダイレクト感に溢れる音像はまるでPAスピーカー前で聞いているようです。更に素晴らしいのは曲間のわずかな拍手以外は周りのオーディエンスの存在を感じさせない点で、その音像の透明度と音の質感はまさにサウンドボード級なのです!!

そんなディスク1の名古屋公演ですが、なんと開演5分前(!!)の場内アナウンスからノーカット収録されており、オープニングSE「1812 Overture」が流れ出すまでの”待ちの時間”から収録されている事に驚かされます。「Sole Survivor」はよく聴くと歌詞1番にだけボーカルに軽めのエコーが掛けられているのが確認出来るのですが、日本公演の前に行ったイギリスのマルヴァーン公演(※GRAVITASツアー初日)ではこの部分にエコーが掛けられておらず、早くも本国と日本のライブで表現に差が出ていることが分かるシーンです。「Wildest Dreams」では明瞭感のあるサウンドの中を高い運動性を伴ってリズムが駆け抜けてゆく様子が完璧な音像で記録されており、ここもまたタッピングやトレモロ・アームを多用したサムの新しいアプローチが好奇心をくすぐる筈です。「Face On The Bridge」では冒頭から確実にリズムを刻んでゆくサムの様子が音像のやや左寄りから耳を襲いますが、この明瞭なリズムの刻みがある為に曲想全体がシャープに引き締まり、1センテンスごとの音の瞬発力が桁違いの力強さで迫ってくる様子に圧倒される筈です。「Time Again」はハードタッチの好シーンが続出します。中でもピアノの上昇音型の後から突入する中間部(3分02秒付近~)のエネルギッシュな展開は、恐らく今回の日本公演中に演奏した同曲で最高のものでしょう。新アルバムのリードトラック「Valkyrie」は演奏の一体感が目覚しく、曲の壮大なスケール感を解像度の高い音像が克明に拾っているのが特徴です。終曲部の最終音でキーボードがグリッサンドを入れている点も要注目で、これは今回の日本公演中の同曲で唯一のシーンとなっています。「Voice Of America」は透明度の高いこの録音でじっと聴いていると、耳へ心地良くその詩的で爽やかな曲想とは裏腹に、音楽的な隙が全く見当たらない厳しくストイックなアレンジを施されていた事に改めて気付かされるのではないでしょうか。

ディスク2は名古屋公演の後半です。「An Extraordinary Life」は各楽器が出す出音の分離感の良さが目立ち、複数の音が同時に進行する響きの豊かさがここもサウンドボード級の解像度で飛び出してきます。またウエットンが終曲間際の一節でオリジナルには無い歌詞を挿れて歌っている箇所もあり(4分50秒~51秒)、これも聴きどころでしょう。「Gravitas」は濡れそぼった湿り気のある魅力的な音色が耳元で広がり、重たい演奏であるにも係わらず非常に滑らかな曲想と音色で記録されているのも興味深いところです。エレクトリック版に戻された「Don’t Cry」は初日のせいかアンサンブルに若干のズレが出ていますが、このズレが翌日の大阪では大幅に修正され東京2DAYSではブレの無い完璧な演奏となってゆくので、この名古屋での演奏はその変化を計る起点として接すると面白さが倍増する筈です。「Only Time Will Tell」は曲のイメージを大切にしながら進んでゆくのが印象深く、これぞ”エイジアサウンド”というものが滲み出た演奏となっています。この要因もオリジナルに忠実なギターサウンドがしっかり出ている事が大きいと思いますが、ここはハウが記憶の彼方に忘れてしまった音が、次世代の若きギタリストによって継承されているのを目の当たりに出来るでしょう。「Open Your Eyes」ではギターとキーボードの出音が大きく出ているのが特徴です。終曲部ではダウンズが派手にグリッサンドを使い、ウエットンも喉を震わせながら絶唱するシーン(6分20秒付近~終曲)が眩しく、そうした迫力のあるサウンドドラマが濃密な音圧と解像度の高い音像を伴って耳元に届けられます。アンコール「Heat Of The Moment」の終演後はエンディングSEが流れ、終演を告げる場内アナウンスも完全収録しています。このアナウンスでは今回のエイジア2014年名古屋公演の主催、後援、特別協力をした各会社名が読み上げられており、これも本録音の資料音源の価値とドキュメンタリー性をグッと高めています。

ディスク3は翌18日、大阪公演の前半です。こちらもディスク1と2同様に質の高い録音ですが、それもその筈、ここで聴ける大阪公演の録音位置は1階席2列目の真ん中、何とウェットンのド真ん前にある席からの収録なのです !! 収録音を聴くと分かりますが、フロント席特有の高い音圧、そして前方ならではのダイレクト感にホールの澄み切った空気感を綺麗に取り込んだ、籠もりの一切ないブライトな音となっているのがお分かり戴けるでしょう。各楽器の音もアンプからの生音をダイレクトに拾っているのですが、特に録音位置の目の前にあるベースアンプからの生音を一番よく拾っていますので、ライブ全編に渡ってウェットンの図太いベースラインをリアルかつ生々しく聴くことが出来るのも嬉しい特徴となっています。前方の席だけに周囲は大きな盛り上がりを見せていますが、しかし曲中は拍手を拾っている箇所が部分的にあるくらいで、煩い歌声や話し声を殆ど拾っていない点は大きく特筆されるでしょう。

ディスクは音の出だしから完全収録された「1812 Overture」SEがまず流れますが、それが終わるといよいよ1階2列目ド真ん中で聴く「Sole Survivor」が飛び出してきます !! ゴリゴリと、いつもの様に図太いあのベース・サウンドを撒き散らしながら進行する圧倒的な音像が序盤から凄まじく、実は後ろで見事な仕事をしているカールやサムの事などついつい忘れてしまうほどです。曲後半、5分19秒付近からアタックの強い音と共に入ってゆくドライヴ感炸裂のベースラインは非常に聴き応えのあるシーンとなっていますので、ここも是非御注目下さい。また他日の演奏ではこの曲のコーダ音からカールのカウントが始まって「Wildest Dreams」へと雪崩れ込みますが、この日は両曲に間を少し設けてから曲がスタートするという変わったスイッチングが楽しめます。終曲後に入るMCでは、ウエットンが開口一番「マイド~ !! (※まいど・毎度)」と、大阪公演らしい挨拶をするのもトピックスでしょう。「Time Again」ではバリバリ・ゴリゴリと鳴るあのベースサウンドが嬉しいほど大きく録れており、やかましいほど響き弾(はじ)かれるベース音と伸びのある熱唱が満載のこの5分間は、ウエットンのファンなら思わずニンマリしてしまう筈です。「Voice Of America」はここでも音楽の目覚しい推進力が随所で感じられ、アコ版の魅力を高く発揮しています。またこの録音ではカールが素手打ちの表現で素晴らしいアクセントを曲に付けている様子もつぶさに追える為、音楽の根底にある表情の豊かさも自然に伝わってくる筈です。「The Smile Has…」は前半部のピアノが瑞々しい音色で出音し、これとウエットンの熱唱が相まった極上のひと時が耳元を駆け抜けます。一転してブリッジから後半部では硬質なベースが前面で暴れ出し、メリハリの際立つ音像と共に官能的な演奏が炸裂してゆきますが、曲の表情が見事に移り変わるこのコントラストの効き方がこの日は悶絶級に見事です。

ディスク4は大阪公演の後半です。「An Extraordinary Life」もまたベース音の浮き立ちによってサウンドの輪郭が他日公演以上によく出ていますが、この録音のもうひとつの恩恵として挙げられるのが曲のドライヴ感も浮き彫りになっている点です。これはリズムラインが強調されたサウンドという、いつもとは視点が異なる音像で接する事で得られる興味深い効果と言えるでしょう。トラック(3)のキーボードソロは、名古屋公演には無かったシーンです。これは「Cutting It Fine」後半のボレロ部分を抜き出したソロとなっており、曲本体がセットから外されてもこの旋律は忘れちゃいないよ、というオーディエンスと自分との記憶の共有を込めたダウンズからのプレゼントの様なものでしょう。そして昨日は若干音がブレていた「Don’t Cry」もこの日は揺るぎ無い安定感を取り戻し、旋律の枝葉が次々と伸びては麗しく開花している様子が見通しの良い音像の中に幾つも感じ取れる筈です。「Only Time Will Tell」もこの録音は特徴的で、ベースラインが強調されている為に他日の音源ではそこまで強く感じられない肉厚のドライヴ感があり、カラフルに彩るメロディラインとキーボードの広がりのある音色がその重厚なリズムに絡んで眩しく反応する様子が見事に記録されています。「Heat Of The Moment」も演奏の輪郭が浮き出た音で捉えており、楽曲の持つ力強さにきっちりフォーカスした素晴らしい音像が最後まで持続します。終演後はこの大阪公演もエンディングSE、そして公演終了を告げる場内放送まで完全収録しており、大阪公演を主催した放送局と協力スポンサーに関するアナウンス等が含まれています。ディスク2の同部分と同じく、ここもまた資料性の高さとドキュメンタリーな魅力が際立つシーンと言えるでしょう。
