ABWH embodies the dream of a progressive rocker and delivers it to Japan in 1990. The classic soundboard album will be released as a gift.
“March 4, 1990: NHK Hall performance” is included in this work. It is the stereo sound board recording. Speaking of their coming to Japan sound board, our press masterpiece “CLOSE TO THE MASTER (Virtuoso 228-230)” is also familiar, but this work is a separate performance. In order to understand the relationship, let’s organize our collection according to the schedule at that time.

Above, all 6 performances. In addition to the top sound board work “CLOSE TO THE MASTER”, this week’s miracle superb audience recording “DEFINITIVE OSAKA 1990 (Virtuoso 449-451)” has also appeared. Under such circumstances, this work is a sound board album recorded on the last day of NHK Hall 3DAYS.
Also, this work can be said to be a sister work of “CLOSE TO THE MASTER”. As a matter of fact, the two sound boards “March 4: NHK Hall” and “March 7: Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium” are both incomplete and cannot be perfect by themselves. “CLOSE TO THE MASTER” was based on “March 7: Yokohama” and complemented with “March 4: NHK Hall” to realize a perfect body, but this work is just the opposite. It is based on the “March 4: NHK Hall” sound board, but complemented by “March 7: Yokohama”.
The complementary points are about 6 seconds in the 2 minutes and 40 seconds range of “Long Distance Runaround” and about 30 seconds around 4 minutes of “Heart Of The Sunrise”. Of the total length of 137 and a half minutes, it is only a slight chip, but when it comes to YES, the beauty of the classic flow is also important. In fact, I couldn’t immerse myself in the YES world because the sound suddenly cooled down there when the sound flew on the way. However, although the upgrade master of the “Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium Performance” excavated this time has excellent sound quality, there is almost no discomfort even if it is used as a complement because the sound characteristics are similar. At last, I can enjoy the “NHK Hall performance” without hesitation.
It was late, but of course the sound was excellent. After all, the sound source is enough to complement the top work “CLOSE TO THE MASTER”, so the basic quality is outstanding. However, the place where I wrote “basic quality” is miso. When it comes to “Is the whole story beautiful?”, To be honest, there are parts where you are worried about the click-like sound that you sometimes hear, the noise of tape deterioration, and the partial swell of the tape (“And You And” There is no such thing as the intro of “I” and “Themes”). It doesn’t go to the perfect sound without some skis, and in that respect, it is behind “CLOSE TO THE MASTER”.

Although it is not perfect, there is no doubt that you can fully enjoy the high-quality stereo sound board in almost the entire volume. The daily encore “I’ve Seen All Good People”, which is different from “CLOSE TO THE MASTER”, is also wonderful, and what is the real thrill of a sound board where you can enjoy YES music with Bill Bruford and Rick Wakeman at 100% synchronization rate? It cannot be replaced with a thing.
ABWH’s performance in Japan, which was born up to the miracle superb live album “DEFINITIVE OSAKA 1990” following the top work “CLOSE TO THE MASTER”. This work is also a masterpiece that plays a part in the trilogy. Please take this opportunity to fully enjoy yourself.

プログレ者の夢を一身に体現し、1990年の日本にも届けてくれたABWH。その定番サウンドボード・アルバムがギフト・リリース決定です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「1990年３月４日：NHKホール公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。彼らの来日サウンドボードと言えば、当店のプレス名盤『CLOSE TO THE MASTER（Virtuoso 228-230）』もお馴染みですが、本作は別公演。その関係を理解するためにも、当時のスケジュールで当店コレクションを整理してみましょう。

以上、全６公演。頂点サウンドボード作『CLOSE TO THE MASTER』の他にも、今週は奇跡の超極上オーディエンス録音『DEFINITIVE OSAKA 1990（Virtuoso 449-451）』も登場しました。そんな中で、本作はNHKホール３DAYSの最終日で記録されたサウンドボード・アルバムなのです。
また、本作は『CLOSE TO THE MASTER』の姉妹作と言うこともできる。実のところ、２つのサウンドボード「３月４日：NHKホール」と「３月７日：横浜文体」はどちらも不完全であり、単体では完全になり得ない。『CLOSE TO THE MASTER』は「３月７日：横浜」をベースにしながら「３月４日：NHKホール」で補完して完全体を実現していましたが、本作は、ちょうどその逆。「３月４日：NHKホール」サウンドボードをベースにしつつ、「３月７日：横浜」で補完しているのです。
その補完ポイントは「Long Distance Runaround」の２分40秒台の６秒ほどと「Heart Of The Sunrise」の４分辺りの約30秒。全長137分半の中では、わずかな欠けにすぎないわけですが、やはりYESといえばクラシックのような流れの美しさも重要。実際、途中で音が飛んでしまう既発では、そこで一気に興が冷めてしまい、YESワールドに浸りきることができませんでした。しかし、今回発掘された「横浜文化体育館公演」のアップグレード・マスターは、格上の音質ではありますが、音の特性が似ているために補完に使用しても違和感はほとんどない。やっと「NHKホール公演」も気兼ねなく満喫できるようになったというわけです。
申し遅れましたが、もちろんサウンドも極上。何しろ、頂点作『CLOSE TO THE MASTER』の補完に使えるほどの音源ですから、基礎クオリティはズバ抜けています。ただし、「基礎クオリティ」と書いたところがミソ。「全編くまなく美しいか？」となるとそうではなく、正直申し上げるとたまに聴こえるクリックのような音が気になる部分があったり、テープ劣化のノイズや、部分的なテープのうねり（「And You And I」や「Themes」のイントロ等）もなくはない。一部のスキもないパーフェクト・サウンドとは行かず、その点で『CLOSE TO THE MASTER』の後塵を拝しているのです。

完全無欠とは言えないまでも、ほぼほぼ全編で高音質のステレオ・サウンドボードがたっぷりと味わえる事に違いはない。『CLOSE TO THE MASTER』とは異なる日替わりアンコール「I’ve Seen All Good People」も素晴らしく、ビル・ブルーフォードやリック・ウェイクマンまで揃ったYESミュージックをシンクロ率100％で味わえるサウンドボードの醍醐味は何物にも代えられません。
頂点作『CLOSE TO THE MASTER』に続き、奇跡の超極上ライヴアルバム『DEFINITIVE OSAKA 1990』まで誕生したABWHの来日公演。本作もまた、三部作の一角を担う大名盤です。どうぞ、この機会にたっぷりとお楽しみください。
