[Phantom out-of-print official video on DVD with the highest quality ever] This work was shot at “September 28, 1991 in Moscow”. That multi-camera pro shot. METALLICA, THE BLACK CROWES, and PANTERA participated in this show with AC / DC as the headliner. In addition, a total of 5 groups including the local band E.S.T. appeared. The pattern is officially recorded and adopted in the official live albums and singles of each band. Just the other day, the full live album was recorded in the deluxe edition of METALLICA “BLACK ALBUM”, and it became a hot topic.
This work is a video version among such official products. This is a DVD version of the professional shot work “FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK: MONSTERS IN MOSCOW” featuring 13 songs from 5 groups. This video work was released on VHS and LaserDisc in 1993, but was soon discontinued. Until now, it has not been made into a DVD. This work is reprinted from the Japanese version LD, which has the highest quality even in such a hidden treasure image. We outsourced the mint quality board to an overseas specialized manufacturer and transferred it to DVD in detail.
At our shop, various out-of-print videos are reproduced from LD, and you already know the high quality. Occasionally, when the official DVD came out, the master tape had deteriorated over time, and it was more beautiful to wake up our LD. The accuracy is still alive in this work.

This work contains 5 sets and 13 songs, each of which is a valuable professional shot, but in reality it is not the only one. The “reality of Russia” that became the scene is intense. To explain what that means, we must introduce you to the background of the event. It will be a little longer, so please skip it lightly.
Speaking of “MONSTERS OF ROCK”, since the West German version was held in 1983, it has expanded year by year and has grown into a festival tour that goes around all over Europe. Then, in 1991, when the Cold War ended, it finally advanced to the communist Honmaru Russia. However, the meaning and scale of this Moscow Games were completely different from those of other countries. First, the meaning. At that time, it was just about a month after the end of the “August coup” in the midst of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Of the 14 Soviet Union countries, up to 10 have declared independence, and the world’s strongest federal republic has collapsed one day or one day. Among them, the rock festival boarded as a “symbol of freedom”.
And scale. According to the materials, this festival has a tremendous mobilization of 1.6 million people (!). For example, “US FESITVAL” in 1983 had 670,000 people in 4 days, and “1st ROCK IN RIO” in 1985 had 1.4 million people in 10 days. The average daily number is around 150,000. However, this event has collected 10 times more in just one day. Well, it seems that the material is wrong, but even if it is one digit lower, 160,000 people (By the way, the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” two years before this work was 120,000 people. was). It’s not very, but you can see that the dimension is different from “one of the festival tours”.
And, in this work, the reality of the huge event is drawn as Ali Ali. Interviews with members and spectators are inserted between live performances, but the words give off a strong sense of the times. “Communism is gone. It doesn’t exist anymore.” “I’ve been fighting Aka to protect rock-on-roll.” The just-wakening “August Coup” is also talked about, and there will be a barricade built by the citizens to protect the youth whose friends were killed and Yeltsin’s house. Of course, since this work is a Japanese version LD, such comments can be vividly understood with full subtitles.
Although you can still understand the documentary scene, this work is not normal even during live performances. The sight of a huge crowd wriggling is impressive, but the Soviet army, not the police, divides the venue. Although there are testimonies that “if you are a police officer, it is difficult because you are hated (by young people)”, it seems unlikely that the Soviet army is liked. Security and spectators glaring at each other, hitting and kicking the crowd with batons. Literally, a young man who is covered in blood and picked up is also shown. It comes out on the best live pro shots of THE BLACK CROWES and METALLICA … It’s completely chaos.

Four sets of professional shot live performances that played the HR / HM of the current generation with the feeling of the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is a video masterpiece that depicts “1991” intertwined with each other.
In the 1960s, it was believed that rock could change the world. That belief and longing continued to live through the commercialization of the 1970s, and culminated in the charity boom of the 1980s. However, in the 90’s, the music industry itself began to decline, and rock lost its “power of the times.” The year 1991 engraved in this work is just before that. “Moscow version of MONSTERS OF ROCK” was the dawn of a new era, and at the same time it was the last brilliance.

そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1991年９月28日モスクワ公演」。そのマルチカメラ・プロショットです。このショウにはAC/DCをヘッドライナーに、METALLICA、THE BLACK CROWES、PANTERAが参加。さらに地元バンドE.S.T.も含めた全５組が出演しました。その模様はオフィシャル収録され、各バンドの公式ライヴアルバムやシングルにも採用。つい先日もMETALLICA『BLACK ALBUM』のデラックス・エディションに完全版ライヴアルバムが収録され、話題となりました。
本作は、そんなオフィシャル品の中でも映像編となるもの。出演した５組の13曲をフィーチュアしたプロショット作品『FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK: MONSTERS IN MOSCOW』をDVD化した１枚です。この映像作は1993年にVHSやレーザーディスクでリリースされつつ、すぐに廃盤。現在に至るまでDVD化されていない。本作は、そんな秘宝映像でも最高峰クオリティとなる日本盤LDから復刻。ミント・クオリティ盤を海外の専門メーカーに委託して精緻にDVDに移し替えたのです。
当店ではさまざまな廃盤映像をLDから復刻しており、その品質の高さはすでにご存知のことと思います。時には、公式DVDが出たらマスター・テープが経年劣化していて当店のLD起こしの方が美しかった……というケースもあるほどの映像美。本作でもその精度は健在です。

【軍隊まで導入された混沌の超巨大フェスの実録】
画質・音質は「完全オフィシャル級」「史上最高峰」とだけご理解頂き、内容に移りましょう。本作には５組・13曲が収録されており、それぞれが貴重なプロショットなのですが、実はそれだけでありません。現場となった「ロシアの現実」が強烈なのです。その意味をご説明するには、イベントの背景をご紹介せねばなりません。少々長くなりますので、軽く読み飛ばしてください。
“MONSTERS OF ROCK”と言えば、1983年に西ドイツ版が開催されて以降、年々拡大して欧州全土を巡るフェスティバル・ツアーへと成長してきました。そして、冷戦終結の1991年には遂に共産圏の本丸ロシアへ進出したのです。しかし、このモスクワ大会は他国版とは意味も規模もまるで異なっていました。まず、意味。当時はソ連邦の崩壊真っ直中でして「８月クーデター」の終結から約１ヶ月しか経っていない。14あったソ連の構成国のうち10ヵ国までもが独立を宣言しており、１日また１日と世界最強の連邦共和国が音を立てて崩れていた。その中で「自由の象徴」としてロック・フェスが乗り込んでいったのです。
そして規模。資料によりますと、このフェスは160万人（！）という途方もない動員が記されているのです。この数がどれだけ膨大かと申しますと、例えば1983年の“US FESITVAL”は４日間で67万人ですし、1985年の“第１回ROCK IN RIO”でも10日間で140万人。１日平均では15万人前後なわけです。ところが、このイベントはたった１日で10倍をかき集めてしまった事になる。まあ、さすがに資料が間違っているとしか思えないわけですが、仮に一桁下だとしても16万人（ちなみに、本作の２年前の“モスクワ・ミュージック・ピース・フェスティバル”は12万人でした）。とてもではありませんが「フェス・ツアーのうちの１回」とは次元が違う事がご理解頂けるでしょう。
そして、本作はその巨大イベントの現実がアリアリと描かれていく。ライヴの合間にはメンバーや観客のインタビューが挿入されるのですが、その言葉から匂い立つ時代感が強烈。「共産主義は過ぎ去った。もう存在してないよ」「ロックオンロールを守るためにアカと戦ってきたんだ」等々、他の時代・場所ではあり得ない証言が次々と溢れ出す。起きたばかりの「８月クーデター」も話題に上り、友人が殺された若者やエリツィンの家を守るために市民たちが築いたバリケードも登場する。もちろん、本作は日本盤LDですからそうしたコメントも完全字幕でビビッドに理解できます。
ドキュメンタリー・シーンだけならまだ分かるものの、本作はライヴ中も普通ではない。数え切れない膨大な群衆が蠢く光景もド迫力ですが、その会場を仕切っているのが警察ではなくソ連軍。「もし警察官だったら（若者から）憎まれているから大変だ」という証言も出てくるものの、ソ連軍が好かれているとも到底思えない。セキュリティと観客が睨み合い、押し寄せる群衆を警棒で殴るわ、蹴るわ。文字通り、血まみれになってつまみ出される若者も映されている。それがTHE BLACK CROWESやMETALLICAの極上ライヴ・プロショットに乗せて出てくるのですから……もう完全にカオスです。

ソ連崩壊の時代感と当代きってのHR/HMを奏でていた４組のプロショット・ライヴ。双方が絡み合って「1991年」を描き出す映像傑作です。
60年代、ロックは世界を変えられると信じられていました。その信念と憧れは70年代の商業化を経ても生き続け、80年代のチャリティ・ブームへと結実していきました。しかし、90年代に入ると音楽業界そのものが衰退を始め、ロックも「時代のパワー」を失っていった。本作に刻まれた1991年とは、その直前。「モスクワ版MONSTERS OF ROCK」とは新時代の夜明けであり、同時に最後の輝きだったのではないでしょうか。
HR/HM黄金時代の幕開けが1983年の“US FESITVAL”だとするなら、最後の打ち上げ花火が本作。時代色が濃厚だからこそ、オフィシャル再発も望めない幻の名作。どうぞ、史上最高峰クオリティの本作で存分にお楽しみください。
