“TRILOGY TOUR 1986-1987”を代表する名映像がギフト・リリース決定です。その代表映像とは「1986年10月21日トロント公演」。古くから定番として知られるオーディエンス・ショットですが、本作は最近になって登場したアップグレード・マスターなのです。
まずは、演奏者として頂点を究めていた“TRILOGY TOUR”の全体像からショウのポジションをイメージしてみましょう。

これがツアーの概要。当時のデータにあやふやな点もあるので公演数は信じないでいただきたいのですが、おおよその流れはイメージしていただけると思います。日本公演以外は北米をくまなく巡っており、本作のトロント公演は冒頭の「北米#1」。日本では『TRILOGY』が発売されつつも、北米ではまだ……というタイミングでした。この時期はマーク・ボールズ脱退→ジェフ・スコット・ソート復帰の交代劇があり、本作で歌っているのはジェフです。
そんな本作のクオリティは、実に素晴らしいオーディエンス・ショット。ご覧になったことのある方もいらっしゃると思いますが、ステージ正面のスタンド席だったのかやや見下ろし気味に捉えたアングル。何よりも前列の腕や頭が映り込まず、ステージだけが画面を占領する極上の視界なのです。しかも、カメラワークも素晴らしい。1986年と言えばホームビデオカメラが普及し始めた頃。コンサートを客席から撮影するにも機材も大きく、撮影テクニックも発展途上という時代でした。しかし、本作はそんな時代だったことが信じられない。手すりを三脚代わりにしているのかビシッとした安定感が素晴らしく、それでいてステージを縦横無尽に駆け回るイングヴェイをキッチリ捕らえて放さない。曲間ではカメラを置き直しているのかフレームアウトもしますが、演奏中はバストアップまで果敢にズームしても、ほとんど手ブレを起こさないのです。

そのクオリティで描かれるショウがまた凄い……凄まじい！　何が凄まじいって、もちろん若かりしイングヴェイ。猛烈なスピードで輝くフレーズの速射・速射・速射……。しかも、その１音１音の粒立ちは美しく、いくら加速しようと乱れない。それだけ正確無比にも関わらず、機械的な味気なさも皆無で、燃え上がるパッションがそのまま音になったような歌心のインプロヴィゼーションが溢れて止まらないのです。今なお、オリジネイターの凄味を放つイングヴェイではありますが、やはり1987年までの彼は尋常ではない。ロック・ギターの世界は八百万の多神教ではありますが、この時代のイングヴェイほど“技術・革新性・センス・情熱”を天上界レベルでシンクロさせた神が他にいたでしょうか。
そんなイングヴェイに全編圧倒されまくる映像ではありますが、他のメンバーも天才だから凄い。ジェフも絶好調で本来は難しい『TRILOGY』ナンバーでも果敢に攻めていますし、若きイングヴェイに唯一対抗できた魔術師イェンスも凄まじい指先を見せつける。そして、思わぬ伏兵はベースのウォーリー・ヴォス。正直なところ、イングヴェイ中心主義では凄味が分かりづらいものの、彼もまた紛れもない天才。昨今、GRAHAM BONNET BANDにジョーイ・タフォーラが加入して話題となっていますが、そのジョーイの大名盤『OUT OF THE SUN』でベースを弾いていたのがウォーリーなのです。その「Eternity’s End」で聴かせたベース・ソロや「Samurai」のイントロは、あまりにもクラシカルで美しく、歌心にあふれていた。マニア筋に「マカパインの1stで弾いたビリー・シーンより凄い」と言わせるほど。結局、何ひとつ正式な録音を残さずにイングヴェイ・バンドを去り、1992年に34歳の若さで病死してしまったウォーリー。本作でもイングヴェイがあまりにも凄まじいために、ウォーリーの才能が爆発しているとは言い難いのですが、端々で生前の姿をハッキリと観ることができるのです。

ジェフが歌う『TRILOGY』ナンバー（アルバム９曲中６曲を披露）や『CHASING YNGWIE』では観られなかった「Soldier Without Faith」、DEEP PURPLEの「Highway Star」など、セットも豪華絢爛。それを光速パッセージで貫くイングヴェイ……。本作から映し出されるのは、二度とは戻らぬ、そしてついぞ代わりも生まれなかったネオクラ桃源郷。その大定番映像の最高峰版です。どうぞ、“奇跡のギタリスト”だったイングヴェイ・マルムスティーンを存分にお楽しみください。
