’71年WHO’S NEXTリリース期のデイトン公演を2種類の音源でカップリング収録した2枚組プレスCDが登場！
1枚目に激レア・最初期ビンテージ・アナログ盤、2枚目に同日テープソースのカップリング収録で’71年夏のアメリカ・デイトン公演を2CDにプレス収録。アナログ盤はコピー盤を含め複数アイテムが存在し、当時は数少ない’71年USツアーを収録した定番アイテムの一つでしたが、どうやらオリジナルのアナログ盤は再発されなかったようで、コピー盤が連発リイシューされることで、オリジナル盤の存在そのものがかすみ、音源やアイテム自体の位置づけがウヤムヤになってしまった感がありました。そしてその存在もすっかり忘れられてしまった感もあった(？)CD時代の1998年に「オリジナル盤からの復刻！」との触れ込みでWholiday Musicと言うレーベルから初めてアナログ起こしでデイトン公演のCD化が実現し注目もされましたが、残念なことにそこに収録されたものはオリジナル盤からの復刻ではなく、クリアさに欠けたコモった音源が収録され、オリジナル盤ではきちんと完奏収録されているはずのBargainも3分ほどでフェードアウトしてしまうなど、オリジナル盤にはほど遠いアイテムでありました。その後それらの内容情報も特に是正されることなく時が経ち、2000年代に入り今度はトレント上にオリジナルとは別のテープ・ソースが流通し、アイテム化もされました。そのテープソースとアナログ盤のソースは互いに別ソースなのですが、何故かそれ自体もきちんと語られる事もなく現在に至ります。今回のリリースではこれら音源の位置づけやジャケットにまつわるニッチな新事実をも分かる範囲で明らかにし、振り返ってみようというものです。

まずCD1枚目の説明です。ここでは’71年デイトン公演を最初に収録したとされるオリジナルLP盤”THE WHO – LIVE! / collector’s item” (No Label、No Numberで、マトリクスナンバー92071-A,B)から収録。ジャケは青を基調としたデザインで、レーベルも濃い青地の物。アナログ盤でむしろこの日のライブ盤として有名なのはBerkeley Recordsとされる実際はレーベルが記載されていない同名タイトルのレコードであり、Wholiday MusicのCDでもそのBerkeley Records盤のフロントジャケのデザイン(赤を基調としたもの)がフロントにデザインされていましたが、本当のオリジナル盤とされるのは今回のマトリクスナンバー92071-A,B、青を基調としたBerkeley Recordsのジャケとは異なるデザインのタイトルです。なおこの盤のジャケやラベルの画像は今回のフロントジャケのインナーに掲載しておりますのでご覧下さい。この盤ですが、音質は極めてクリアであり、十分に奥行きも感じさせるナチュラルなモノラルサウンドで、Disc2に収録のテープソースとも甲乙付けがたく、むしろこのアナログ音源の方がステージの近さやクリアさでは勝るほどの音源です。このアナログ盤はわずか6曲の収録ですが、既発CDのWholiday盤では3分ちょっとでフェードアウトしてしまったBargainもこのオリジナルアナログ盤では約6分収録の完奏バージョンで収録しているのは勿論のこと、曲間部分ながらDisc2収録のテープソースには含まれていない箇所をも収録しているのもポイントです。このアナログ盤はPinball Wizardがイントロカットインで収録されていましたので、今回エクストラ・トラックとしてイントロをテープソースでパッチしたレストア・バージョンを7曲目に収録しました。元々甲乙付けがたい音源同士ですので、繋ぎによる違和感が驚くほど全くないので必聴です。

2枚目にはアナログ盤とは別のテープソースに最新リマスターを施し収録。近年ネット上で流通した音源であり、モノラルでアナログ盤ソースとほぼ同等の音質ながらアナログ盤よりも収録時間も長くMagic Bus途中まで約75分間、全14曲の収録。過去にも一度CD化済みです。今回のCD化にあたりアナログ盤ソースにのみ含まれる曲間部分を丁寧な編集で2箇所挿入しました(Bargain及びBehind Blue Eyesそれぞれの演奏後の曲間)。これにより細かい差異ではありますが過去最長盤を実現。さらに既発同様Pinball Wizardの歌い出しでテープのヨレが見られたため、ここはミクロ単位での超絶ピッチ補正処理を施し、ほぼ違和感なく鑑賞頂けます。既発盤ではそこでヨレと音切れもあったため、こちらも細かい差異ではありますが、今回のタイトルは、より一層完璧な仕上がりになっております。

ボーナスとして趣向を凝らしたフロントジャケが付属します。この日のライブではファンにはなじみのあるアナログ盤である先述のBerkeley Records(これも謎の多い一枚なのですが)の緑色を基調としたバージョンを再現した4面フロントジャケです。”COLLECTOR’S ITEM”というタイトルのLPとしては知名度からしてこちらのジャケになじみがあるファンの方が殆どだと思うのですね。さらにインナーにはこのBerkeley Recordsのジャケデザインの元ネタと思しき衝撃的かつ大変貴重な雑誌記事を熱心なWHOマニアからの提供を受けインナーに掲載！このインナーの画像ですが、雑誌に掲載段階で左右反転で掲載されてしまっているのはご愛敬ですが、この掲載写真を2階調にし、オリジナルの青ジャケ盤(マトリクスナンバー92071-A,B)のジャケの上下に配置されたタイトルを残した状態で貼り付けるとBerkeley Recordsのジャケデザインが出来上がります！詳細は実物をご覧下さい。細部にまでこだわり抜いたTHE WHO1971年夏のアメリカツアーを代表する新作プレス盤！大大注目盤です！
