“THE WHO HITS 50!”続行中のTHE WHOから最新ライヴアルバムが到着しました。2014年11月に始まった50周年ツアーは、今年も2月から再開。母国イギリスでのキックオフ公演『WEMBLEY ARENA 2016』もレポートしてまいりましたが、今回は北米レッグの傑作録音。「2016年3月24日ワシントン公演」を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムです。ちょうど1年前にも北米を回ったTHE WHOですが、今回は全28公演の日程で、本作は11公演目にあたります。
本作の旨みは、何と言っても豊かなサウンド。現場となった“ベライゾン・センター”は2万人規模の屋内競技場なのですが、大歓声にこそ空間スペクタクルがあるものの、楽音は極めてクリア。芯も図太くクッキリと切り立ち、各楽器が混じり合うことなく隙間も感じられる。詳細な録音ポジションは分かっていませんが、楽音が真っ直ぐに届きながらその後に残響が後方に広がるような感触なので、かなり前方席だったのではないでしょうか。例えば、MCでも単語1つひとつがハッキリと聴き取れながら、その残響が遠くで小さく響いているような感覚なのです。
それは歓声からも感じられる。密度の高いきめ細やかな大喝采が絨毯のようなのですが、それがずっと後方に広がっていくよう。楽音とスピーカーの間に入ってこないのです。そして、その広がりの大きいこと! クリアな楽音をたっぷりと楽しみつつ、2万人の存在も確かに感じられるのです。
そんなクオリティで描かれるグレイテスト・ヒッツは格別。「THE WHOと言えば」で思い起こされるあの曲、この曲が次から次へと披露されていく。セットリストは2016年の初日であった『WEMBLEY ARENA 2016』から若干変わっており、前半に『QUADROPHENIA』の「The Real Me」、後半には『THE WHO BY NUMBERS』の「Slip Kid」がセット入り。特に「Slip Kid」はTHE WHO全史でも数えるほどしか演奏された記録がない激レア・ソングです。去年/一昨年もほんの数回演奏されてはいたものの、このひ披露されたのは、実はハプニング。本来はここで「Eminence Front」を演奏する予定でしたが、前日になってピート・タウンゼントの声が出なくなり、リハーサルなしで「Slip Kid」に切り替えられたのです。その旨を語るMCに驚喜し、レアソングを存分に楽しむ観客の反応も非常に生々しい。次の“3月26日セントルイス”では、「Eminence Front」に戻っているため、まさにこの日だけの貴重パフォーマンス。それがサウンドボードにも迫るクリア・サウンドで聴けるのです。

“THE WHO HITS 50!”では屈指の、2016年に限ればナンバー1とも言える素晴らしいサウンド。それだけのクオリティで貴重なパフォーマンスが聴ける本生100%の記録です。さすがにピートの声は好調とは言い難いものの、バンド全体ではそんな不調を跳ね返すがごとくに絶好調。ツアー再開から10公演以上を重ねていたこともあり、エンジン全開です。パーフェクトなショウとは言えないためプレスCDにはいたしませんでしたが、それもさえもが生々しい傑作録音。ぜひ、この機会に最新のTHE WHOをたっぷりとお楽しみください。
