不世出の名シンガー、デヴィッド・カヴァデール。その美声が究極的に映えるオフィシャル映像の史上最高峰版が登場です。本作は、日本盤レーザーディスク復刻シリーズの最新弾『STARKERS IN TOKYO』です。このライヴは『RESTLESS HEART』でプロモーション来日した際に、レコード会社のスタジオで行われたアコースティック・ライヴ。50人ほどのファンや関係者を前に、カヴァデールと当時の相棒エイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグの２人だけで演奏した一夜だけの特別パフォーマンスでした。
その内容は、まさに“人の声の魔法”。エイドリアンがつま弾くアコギだけをバックにして、穏やかなカヴァデールの歌声がそれはそれは素晴らしく、「美声」２文字の意味がそっくり音になったかのよう。普段のロックスタイルでも「呼吸の音も歌の一部」と言われる彼ですが、極めて素朴な音だけの空間ではその機微がムキ出しになり、ヴィヴラートのささやかな揺らぎ、息遣いのニュアンスまでもが心にさざ波を起こす。一言歌に交える「Thank you」でさえもが歌の一部なのです。当時はステージでもアルバムでも声の荒れが感じられ始め、バラードでもリキんで割れてしまうことが多々。ところが、アコギ１本を相手には激昂することもなく、ただただ、メロディと情感だけが穏やかに、静かに染み出していく……。
この模様は『STARKERS IN TOKYO』と題され、CD／LD／VHSで公式リリース。今なお「84年以来」「90年代の最高傑作」「最後の美声」等々など、現在でも愛され続けています。しかし、そうしたオフィシャル作品群も現在では廃盤。特に映像版はレーザーディスク／ビデオ・メディア自体が廃れかけた現在では見ることも困難。『SLIDE IT IN』25周年版に１曲、『SLIP OF THE TONGUE』20周年版に２曲が収録された程度で、公式にDVD化される気配さえない状態が続いているのです。ところが、この映像版はCDよりも遙かに優れている。単に“画付き”というだけでなく、CDでは変更されていた曲順も、ほぼ現場の通り。即興だった「Only My Soul」やリクエストに応えてホンのちょっと歌いかけた「Burning Heart」「Fool For Your Loving」は飛ばされていますが、それらもエンディングにまとめられており、“当日のすべて”を体験できたのです。
そんな『STARKERS IN TOKYO』映像。現存する最高峰版は、日本盤レーザーディスクです。今回も未使用のミント・クオリティ版を発掘し、それをアナログ映像専門の海外メーカーに委託。プロ・ユースの機材＆環境でデジタル化しました。VHS他のテープメディアよりも情報量も圧倒的に多く、再生ムラも発生しないレーザーディスクですが、真に素晴らしいのは保存力。オフィシャルが大元マスターから復刻しようとしても経年劣化しているケースもあり、結局日本盤レーザーディスクの方が優れていることも珍しくない。実際、WHITESNAKEの『SUPER ROCK ’84』は本シリーズで復刻した後にレコード会社の倉庫から発掘したマスターで正式DVD化もされたものの、ジェネが若いはずの公式マスターとなんら変わらないクオリティだったのです。オフィシャル側が『STARKERS IN TOKYO』を全編デジタル化しているか分かりませんが、将来もし公式DVD化されたとしても、本作を超えることはまずないでしょう。
さらに、本作はボーナスとしてTV番組“VH1 UNPLUGGED”に出演した際の「Too Many Tears」「The Deeper The Love」、さらに『RESTLESS HEART』時代のPVも３曲追加収録しました。特に素晴らしいのは、“VH1 UNPLUGGED”。本編と同様にエイドリアンと２人だけのアコースティック・パフォーマンスですが、“THE LAST HURRAH TOUR 1997”開始後の1997年10月にロンドンで収録されたもの。まさに本編の続編映像なのです。

文字通り、「息をするのも忘れる」ほどに美しい声。希代の名シンガーの美声がこれ以上なく味わえる歴史的オフィシャル映像。その最高峰クオリティ版です。当のカヴァデール自身が「最後かもね」と語る2016年ジャパンツアーも目前。そんな秋の夜長にぜひ味わい尽くしていただきたい極上品。永久に輝きを失わないプレスDVDに封じ込め、今週末あなたのお手元へお届けいたします。
