 21世紀に現れた80年代のメタル魔術師、Per Erikの傑作録音がまたもや登場しました!! Per Erikは、IRON MAIDENの「SEVENTH SON OF STTOCKHOLM」など、80年代後期を中心に活動していた名テーパー。最近までありそうでなかった「80年代の北欧」を高音質で甦らせてくれる録音師です。今回、彼のコレクションから飛び出したのはWHITESNAKE! かの魔術師は、録音の出来/不出来に差がありますが、今回はバッチリの勝ち組録音。もちろん、魔術師の魔力が宿っている以上は、ベストな形で後世に残さねばなりません。永久保存のプレス2CD仕様でリリース決定です!!

 かの魔術師がレコーダーを回したのは、1990年8月21日のストックホルム公演です。1990年のWHITESNAKEと言えば、オフィシャル化もされたドニントン(8月18日)や大感動の解散公演(武道館9月26日)が有名ですが、本作はその間となる“ドニントン公演の次のライヴ”。ドニントンを皮切りにヨーロッパ各地をMONSTERS OF ROCKツアーとして回っており、その北欧版でした。会場となったグローブ・アリーナは、1989年に竣工したばかりの球形ドームで、現在でも世界最大の半球状の建築物として知られています。つまり、魔術師が居合わせたのは(当時)最新・世界屈指の音響施設だったわけです。
 それを実証するのが、本作のサウンド。各楽器がキレイに分離し、しっかりと芯が通っている。MONSTERS OF ROCKが可能なほどの広さを感じさせながら、輪郭のボヤけない絶品サウンドです。オーディエンスの声も大群衆の熱狂を伝えながら、オフィシャル盤のようにスケール感たっぷりで楽曲とぶつからない。「一体、どんなポジションで録ったんだ?」と思わせるあたり、さすが魔術師といったところです。実際、このサウンドは名盤の誉れ高き「FINAL JUDGEMENT(Shades 390)」にも負けてない。大感動の解散公演を記録した、かの名盤と比べても迫力は本作の方が断然上。事実、クリアさは「FINAL JUDGEMENT」に半歩も引けを取らず、迫力・スペクタクルだけを上乗せした感じ。この辺はもう好みのレベルですが、“ゴージャスを極めたWHITESNAKE”の真価を捉えきったベスト録音でしょう。(テープチェンジのカットがあったCheap An’ Nastyの4:15、Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The Cityの8:53の欠損は、本盤では別音源をインサートすることで、ノンカットで楽しむことができます。)

 事実、このゴージャス感は何も代え難い。当時は批判も多かったスティーヴ・ヴァイを擁した“SLIP SNAKE”ですが、ここまで絢爛豪華なロックは史上類を見ません。しかも、別にステージが動いたり、誰かが回転するわけでもない。音だけで「なんて豪華!」と感じさせるのだから凄い。カヴァデール自身、「許せる限り、豪華なロックショウだったよ。まるでサーカスのようにね」と語っていましたが、それはすなわち、彼の信念「やるべき価値のあることは、やりすぎる価値がある」が行き着くべき極北だったわけです。
 その後、カヴァデールは伝説との融合COVERDALE/PAGEを経て“渋味”を標榜した「RESTLESS HEART」「INTO THE LIGHT」を発表していきました。確かに、当時は「SLIP OF THE TONGUE」時代を辛辣に語ることもありましたが、あれから25年が経ちました。WHITESNAKEは再結成し、ゲフィン時代の大ヒット曲を演奏することで長らえ、「『RESTLESS HEART』は実質ソロ・アルバムだったのさ」と語るカヴァデール。「BURN」でデビューした彼のキャリア・成功の頂点はどこだったのか。それは「SERPENCE ALBUS」だったかも知れません。しかし、時代を極めた彼が、そこを超え“時代をリードした”刹那は「1990年」だったのではないでしょうか。

 本作には、その“やりすぎの美学”が克明に記録されています。オフィシャル化された「LIVE AT DONINGTON 1990」は言うまでもなく素晴らしいですが、本作には、観客の側から見た“真実”が刻まれている。「SLIP OF THE TONGUE」ツアーは、ともすれば“スティーヴ・ヴァイの腕前拝見”として聴かれがちですし、実際「Slide It In」におけるアレンジ能力やギター超名盤「PASSION AND WARFARE」を導入したソロタイム、サイクスとは別次元の世界を拓いた「Crying In The Rain」など、聴きどころは無数にあります。しかし、まず耳を傾けて頂きたいのは、“時代を超えたロック”を現出させてみせた絶頂WHITESNAKEの底力、そして“カヴァデールの信念”なのです。前に進むことしか知らなかった“情念のシンガー”の咆哮が轟くからこそ、私たちの心はどうしようもなく動かされてしまう。この時代にしか生まれ得なかったロックを、カヴァデールの生き様を、魔術師がド迫力に記録したスーパー音源。永久仕様のプレス2CDで、貴方のコレクションに加わるチャンスです!
