これぞ全てのヴァン・ヘイレン・ファン必聴の名音源。ハリウッドのスターウッド・クラブに出演中の彼らは当時人気絶頂だったキッスのジーン・シモンズに見出され、彼のプロデュースの下でレコード契約にこぎつけるべくデモテープをロサンゼルスはヴィレッジ・レコーダー・スタジオにて制作。マスタリングはニューヨークのエレクトリック・レディランドで行われた（ここでもう一度House Of PainとRunnin’ With The Devilも録音された）。残念な事に契約を得る事は出来なかったが、テープの出来が素晴らしかったのは事実で、これぞヴァン・ヘイレン版デッカテープスといった趣がある。当然の如く音質は極上のステレオで、通常に楽しむ事が出来る。ジーンのプロデュースという事もあり、サウンド的にはキッスに近い軽めの爽快感が前面に出ている。それは特にアレックスのドラムの音録りに顕著だ。エディのギターにも余りフェイザーがかけられておらず、厚みを持たせる為随所にてダブルトラック処理がなされている為、左右のスピーカーから二台のリズムギターが流れてくる。デイヴの声自体は後のそれと余り変わらないが、On Fire、Runnin’ With The Devilではデビュー作でのヴァージョンとは異なったヴォーカル・アレンジが聴かれる。それは『1984』収録のHouse Of PainやセカンドのSomebody Get Me A Doctorでも同様で、Babe, Don’t Leave Me Aloneにおいても当時のライヴや他のデモとは異なった歌い方を披露している。興味深いのはSomebody Get Me A Doctorの編曲が当時のライヴや1978年の日本公演のものと異なり、セカンドでの正式ヴァージョンに近い形になっている所だ。ジーンはここでのアレンジの多くには彼の意見が加えられていると語っているが、今聴いてみると確かにそれも納得できる。未発表曲の中ではWoman In Love、She’s The Woman、Let’s Get Rockin’ 、Babe, Don’t Leave Me Aloneが当時のライヴで演奏されていたもので、この様に半正式な完成形が最高の音質で聴けるのは嬉しいところ。Let’s Get Rockin’は「Lady Loose」という別名でも知られている。他の未発表曲であるBig Trouble、Put Out The Lightsはライヴの記録が残されておらず、ここと次のワーナーブラザース・デモのみにて聴く事が出来る。Big Troubleの出来は特に良く、これが正式に発表されなかったのが不思議な位だ。80年代にはこのセッションからのHouse Of PainとRunnin’ With The Devilが流出し、ファーストのオープニングで聞かれる車のホーンが実はHouse Of Painのエンディングであった事が明らかになり、ファンの間で話題となった。デイヴ最後のアルバムとなった『1984』のエンディングであるHouse Of Painがデビュー・アルバムのオープニングを飾ったOn Fireとメドレー形式となっていたのが皮肉である。デイヴが復帰した今、運命というメビウスの輪が遂に繋がった感を受けるのだ。
