UFOのバンドの歴史は1969年に遡る。同時期に結成されたツェッペリンやパープル、そしてサバスなどといったバンドに比べ現在の知名度では後塵を拝しているが、後のハードロックバンドへ与えた影響は大きく、後のデフ・レパードやアイアンメイデン、メタリカなど心棒者も多い。

UFOは1970年にデビュー・アルバムをリリース後、早くも1971年に初来日公演を行なっている。当時はまだ人気が高まる直前であり、スリー・ドッグ・ナイトとのジョイント・ステージでセットでの予定であった。しかしスリー・ドッグ・ナイトが急遽キャンセルになったため、UFO単独での来日公演となったものの、会場は日比谷野音であった。

UFOの名声が確立し、世界的な成功を収めるのはマイケル・シェンカーを迎え入れた1974年の『現象』からであろう。アルバムの完成度が高かったのはもちろん、美しいメロディを備えたハード・ロックは時代の要請とマッチし、バンドに世界的な名声を与えた。翌1975年からは大規模な全米ツアーを行ない、1977年には傑作『新たなる殺意』を物にするに至る。この時期がUFOの最盛期と言えるだろう。同時にマイケル・シェンカーはリッチーブラックモアやジミーペイジらと並び、世界最高のギタリストのひとりとして認知されることになる。このように成功への階段を順調に上り始めたUFOだったが、凋落の足音はメンバー間のトラブルから徐々に兆しはじめていた。そして1978年にバンドの軸を担っていたマイケル・シェンカーが脱退する。タイミング悪く二度目の来日公演が行なわれたのは、マイケル脱退後のことであった。それでもライヴ・アルバムの名盤として数えられる『UFOライヴ』リリース後とあって期待された来日公演であり、その実、素晴らしい演奏で日本のファンを魅了したのである。

本作は、その2度目の来日公演より1979年6月23日中野サンプラザ公演を超高音質で完全収録している。音源となっているのは当時臨場した録音者本人の提供によるもので、サンプル音源を聴いていただければわかる通り、初登場でありながら、このクオリティは特筆すべき高音質である。
