4 CD-R which completely recorded 2 performances of the early stage of “Pilgrim American Tour” in 1998 with a very good stereo and audience recording. This tour is positioned for Clapton as being a special thing full of adventure. For the promotion of the album “PILGRIM” which was released just before the tour, for Clapton, for the clapton to reproduce the sound of album that used to be called “drastic change” in the live stage, the band · Personally I was struggling considerably. As a result, I looked up to the assistance of the artist, Babyface, who was a close friend at the time, and appointed a new-looking black musician from his staff to drum and keyboard two people. The sound quality is no problem at all, the 2nd performance is balanced with clear sounds that can be heard in the sound board recording, and the 3rd performance is also mastering the same trader sound source as was previously released from the CD-R membership shop Compared to the old-fashioned board which was a bad quality of discs, the master quality which the tone quality improved markedly, the disc quality is also a CD-R release with no problem at all in quality. As there was hardly any sound source in the early stages of this tour, Clapton Mania would have to say that this high quality would be indispensable. 1998年、新作「Pilgrim」のリリースに伴い、3月から6月まで大規模に展開された全米ツアーより、ツアー2日目／3日目となる、4月2日のカンサス公演、4月3日のセント・ルイス公演を、どちらも高音質ステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録。打ち込みを多用した新作をどうステージで表現するかに注目が集まったツアーですが、前半に新作からのナンバー、中盤にアコースティック・セット、後半に定番の楽曲と、3部に分かれたセットリストで構成され、その全てのパートで、この時点のファンが望む形を提示する演奏が展開されています。まず前半の新作の楽曲群では、アルバム同様、リンクする楽曲をバンドのグルーブで強烈に増幅させる演奏を聴く事ができます。終始同じコード進行ながら一つのストーリーとして完結する「River Of Tears」では、今までに無かったスタイルの演奏でアルバムのコンセプトを表現し、タイトル・ナンバー「Pilgrim」では、終始ダークな部分を内包しながら、キーボードのサスティーンと対照的な、スタッカートを利かせたフレーズを連発し、楽曲の秀逸さを増大させる演奏が繰り広げられ、特にエンディング部はこのツアーの象徴的な演奏を聴く事ができます。中盤のアコースティックでは、「アンプラグド」を望むファンの希望通りのセットリストが展開され、特にカンサス公演では、その後セットリストから外れてしまう「Circus」が披露されたレアな公演となります。後半の演奏は、「Old Love」「Have You Ever Loved A Woman」の新旧のブルースナンバー、「Sunshine Of Your Love」「Crossroads」「Wonderful Tonight」と全てのファンが望む、クラプトンのギターをフューチャーしたステージが展開されています。今回の音源は、ファンには有名な「GEETARZ」がアップ・ロードした、氏のランクで高評価の音源を使用していますが、両公演共に低音の回り込みが激しかった為、その部分を調整し、その結果、輪郭の際立った最高の音質、特にカンサス公演は演奏内容/音質共に本ツアーから屈指の公演となります。98年という年代からか、その内容とは反していま一つ評価されていない「Pilgrim」ツアーから、その認識を覆すタイトルが登場です。

98年の「ピルグリム・アメリカン・ツアー」序盤の２公演を非常に良好なステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録した４CD-R。このツアーはクラプトンにとっては冒険心に満ちた特別なものであったと位置付けられるもの。ツアー開始直前にリリースされたアルバム『PILGRIM』のプロモーションのためのものであったが、クラプトンにとっては「激変」とも言うべき、打ち込みを多用したアルバムのサウンドをライブ・ステージで再現するために、バンド・パーソネルには相当苦心したのだった。結果的に当時親交の厚かったアーティスト、ベイビーフェイスの助力を仰ぎ、ドラムとキーボード二人に彼のお抱えスタッフから新顔の黒人ミュージシャンを起用した。さらにサウンドを厚くするため、旧知のギタリスト、アンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウとアラン・ダービーを起用してトリプル・ギター編成とするとともに、20人編成のストリング・オーケストラをも帯同したのである。そしてセット・リストにおいては、序盤から６曲立て続けに『PILGRIM』収録ナンバーを披露し、ツアー序盤ではセット・リストに占める新曲の割合はは７曲-９曲に上った。これまでのツアーではまず考えられなかった新曲のフィーチャーぶりである(初日公演では９曲、本作の２日公演で８曲、３日公演で７曲となっていた)。それだけクラプトンのこのアルバムに対する思い入れは深く熱いものだったと言える。そうして再現したこのライブ・ステージでは、人間のドラマーを起用したことが奏功して、「My Father’s Eyes」などはアルバム・バージョンよりも生き生きとしたグルーヴを生み出している。ライブ・ステージでは当然のことながら従来の代表曲やブルース・ナンバーも演奏されているのだが、これらがストリング・オーケストラと絡んで演奏されているのも新しい試みである。驚くのは「Sick And Tired」において、クラプトンのギター・ソロのフレーズがストリング・オーケストラとユニゾンで奏でられていることだ。つまりこれは、事前にギター・ソロのフレーズを採譜させてオーケストラ込みのリハーサルが行なわれていたことを指す。ここまでクラプトンが細かいステージ構成を考えたことなどなかったはずだ。彼はその日その日のフィーリングでソロをとるタイプの人であり、ギター・ソロは100％アドリブだったはずである。これを見てもいかにクラプトンがこのツアーで『PILGRIM』のナンバーを披露することに期するところがあったかが窺い知れる。因みにこのナンバーはツアー中盤でセット・リストからはずれてしまうので、これが聴ける本作は貴重。２日公演では「Circus」もプレイされているのがさらに貴重だ。音質はまったく問題なく、２日公演はサウンドボード録音に聴こえるような明瞭な音とバランスだし、３日公演も以前CD-R会員制ショップからリリースされていたのと同じトレーダー音源をマスターとしているが、劣悪な盤質だった既発盤に比べ、音質は格段にアップしたマスター・クオリティ、盤質もCD-Rながらまったく問題ないクオリティでのリリースである。このツアー序盤の音源はほとんど出回っていなかっただけに、このハイ・クオリティならばクラプトン・マニアは必携と言っていいだろう。因みに、ストリングオーケストラを率いた指揮者ニック・イングマンは、クラプトンの新作『CLAPTON』にもロンドン・オーケストラを率いて参加している人だ。
