当店が今回リリースするバビロン・ツアーのサウンドボード録音三連発の最後を飾るのは1999年のアナハイム公演。バビロンというよりはノー・セキュリティーといった方が正しいかもしれません。しかしアナハイムと言えばピーンと来られる方もいられるのではないでしょうか。そう、昨年当店がリリースしたプレス・タイトル99年ミルウォーキー公演「MILWAUKEE 1999」の初回ボーナスで付属したアップグレード・バージョン音源です。今回は単体プレス・タイトルへの昇格が実現しました。これほどの音質向上であるのならば、例えキースが弱いバランスでもプレスのディスクで聴きたい…そんなマニアの願いが叶います。 　この音源はノー・セキュリティー・ツアーからの初登場サウンドボード録音として登場した当初に話題を呼んでいくつものタイトルがリリースされたものですが、モノラル録音であったことに加え、何よりも「キースのギターがほとんど聴こえない」という、ある種の致命的なバランスの悪さが仇となり、ファンの間ではサウンドボード録音ながらも微妙な評価を与えられていました。それに当時はサウンドボード＝流出というイメージが強く、妙なバランスだけれども、流出音源であれば仕方がないよな、と思い込んでいた人も多かったはず。 しかし当初からその奇妙なバランス故に、果たしてこれが流出音源なのだろうか？と首を傾げていた人も少なくありませんでした。例えばキース側のチャンネルがオフな形でモノラルにダウングレードされた流出音源と言った説もありましたが、もしそうだとしたら他の音も聴こえないことでしょう。しかしこのアナハイム音源、キースのギター以外の音はどれも聴こえてくるので、片チャン・モノラルとして片づけられないバランスを伴っていました。しかし今回のアップグレード・バージョン登場時、改めてALD傍受音源であることが明記され、その素性が明らかとなりました。 確かにこの時期のALD音源にありがちなモノラルでざらついた音質、さらにはいくつかの箇所で聴かれる傍受音源特有の「ジャリッ」という音などを前にすると、なるほどストーンズ流出などではなく、ファンがALD傍受によって録音した音源であったことを痛感させられます。それにモノラルということがあいまった、メリハリのないこれまた独自の質感がまた通常のサウンドボードとは異なるものでした。 それ故にざらついた音質もまたこの音源の独特な癖に映っていたものですが、この質感が今回のアップグレード・バージョンにおいて格段に改善されています。それが昨年の初回ボーナス・リリース時に話題となったものですが、このクオリティで当時リリースされていたとしたら流出音源だと錯覚するのもありかと思えます。しかも今回のプレスCD化に当たってはよりマイルドな質感を生かしたマスタリングを心掛け、あのざらついて平面的な音質のイメージはすっかり覆されたと言えるでしょう！そしてBステージ開始時におけるBGMのみ、同日オーディエンス音源をパッチして最長バージョンに仕上げました。 今となってはライブ序盤で演奏されることがむしろ新鮮に響く「Honky Tonk Women」など、イントロなどは普通にキースの音が聴こえても、バンドの演奏が加わると彼の音がかき消されてしまう…昔のハンプトンどころでないバランスがアナハイム音源の悩みではありますが、今となってはむしろその独特のバランスが楽しめる音源でもあり、それがアップグレードによってさらに良く映ったことも前回の初回ボーナス時に再認識させられた方も多かったのではないでしょうか。それに今から十五年前の演奏ということもあり、チャーリーのドラミングのまだまだ若々しい勢いがとても新鮮に聴こえます。それをささえるダリル・ジョーンズのぶっといベースライン。確かに通常のステージにおいてここまで彼のベースが前面に押し出されることは稀ですが、キースを始めとしたストーンズのメンバーから全幅の信頼を置かれているジョーンズの縁の下の力持ちプレイは実に素晴らしいもの。 しかもサポートを廃したBステージのソリッドなプレイはこのモノラルの音質がぴったりで、そこにキースのギターもノーマル・ステージよりずっと聴こえるバランスとなってリスナーを興奮させることでしょう。どの演奏もダーティでワイルドなストーンズ・グルーブがいい感じで捉えられていますが、昨年のツアーで名演を連発した「Midnight Rambler」は迫力満点。やはりキースがイントロをじらすこのツアーならではの「Start Me Up」がまた懐かしくも聴こえますよね。今までこのアナハイム音源を敬遠していた人にも自信を持ってお勧めできるアップグレード・バージョンが遂に限定のプレスCDにてリリースされます！ ★
