The main material is the official work. 本作は、そんな『RADIO K.A.O.S.』の“真の姿”を再現したもの。もちろん、過去にも似たコンセプトのファンメイド・アルバムもありましたが、本作は次元が違う。何しろ、制作したのはPINK FLOYDの超傑作『FOREVER AND EVER』を制作した海外研究家チームなのです。アルバムはもとより、ありとあらゆる素材をかき集め、ストーリーを歌詞・資料の１語に至るまで精査している。微に入り細に入って組み上げられた上で、完璧に「ひとつの音楽作品」として完成された１枚。「41:24」だったオリジナル・アルバムを遙かに超える「65:03」の完全ストーリー・アルバムなのです。

主な素材は、オフィシャル作品。『RADIO K.A.O.S.』のオリジナルCDや各種シングル・トラック、『KAOS VIDEO EP』、サントラ『THE WIND BLOWS』、それに『THE BANDED RADIO KAOS』です。『THE BANDED RADIO KAOS』は、放送局用に制作されたもので、ジム・ラッドの語りがカットされたレアバージョンです。もちろん、こうした公式トラックをただ並べ直したわけではなく、さまざまな資料から「ロジャーのオリジナル案」を洗い出し、１つのトラック内でも大胆に編集している。例えば「Radio Waves」や「Home」は１分前後長くなっていますし、逆に「Sunset Strip」は繋ぎの関係もあってか短いトラック割りになっています。さらに、その異常なこだわりぶりは、ビリーのセリフ１つにまで徹底。先ほど「主な素材」と書きましたが、公式品では足りないセリフに関しては、“SPEECH!”なるソフトウェアで改めて制作している。これは80年代のコンピュータ“コモドール64”用のソフトで、実際にオフィシャル作品『RADIO K.A.O.S.』で使われたもの。本物の製作現場まで遡ってパーツを創り出しているのです。
これだけでも意匠極まる１枚なのはご理解いただけると思いますが、最後に研究肌のマニア諸氏のため、各曲の詳細もご紹介しておきましょう。真の『RADIO K.A.O.S.』、究極の１枚を聴きながら読み返していただけたら幸いです。

A popular DJ Jim of a fictitious radio station “RADIO K.A.O.S.” in Southern California and a story by a boy who is a plant human but has super power. The main character, Billy, who is a disabled person, was living in the UK while being taken care of by the twin brother Benny, but Benny is involved in the murder case and emigrates to his uncle in California. Billy waking up to the special ability to communicate radio waves with live body, he opened his own radio station “K.A.O.S” with DJ Jim and fought with power who tried to control people with radio waves.
As we continue to communicate, Billy’s supernatural powers become stronger and stronger, and the threat of nuclear weapons, including the atomic bomb development project during World War II “Manhattan Project”, President Reagan, Prime Minister Thatcher, and the politicians of the day be painted. アナログ時代末期の弊害をモロに受けてしまった『RADIO K.A.O.S.』。本編プレスCDは、そのストーリーを公式素材を駆使して完全形に組み立て直した世紀の傑作です。遂にストーリーの全体像が“音楽”のカタチで表現されたわけですが、そのボーナスには“映像”で語るオフィシャル作品をご用意しました。
本作は、当時リリースされたビデオ作品『RADIO K.A.O.S.』（スタジオ・アルバムと同題のため、通称『RADIO KAOS VIDEO EP』とも呼ばれます）。もちろん、現在では廃盤になって久しいビデオ作品ですが、それを精緻にデジタル化した１本。アルバムから４曲「Radio Waves」「Sunset Strip」「Four Minutes」「The Tide Is Turning」が抜粋で映像化されており、演奏シーンと交互に物語のシーンが繰り広げられる映像作品です。

南カリフォルニアにある架空のラジオ局「RADIO K.A.O.S.」の人気D.J.ジムと、植物人間でありながら超能力を持つ少年ビリーによる物語。身体障害者でもある主人公ビリーは、双子の兄ベニーに世話されながら英国で暮らしていたが、ベニーが殺人事件に巻き込まれ、カリフォルニアの伯父の元に移住する。そこで生身でラジオ電波を交信できる特殊能力に目覚めたビリーは、D.J.ジムと共に自分たちのラジオ局「K.A.O.S」を開設し、電波で人々をコントロールしようとする権力者と戦うのであった。
交信を重ねていくうち、ビリーの超能力はどんどん強力になり、第二次大戦中の原爆開発プロジェクト「マンハッタン計画」やレーガン大統領、サッチャー首相ら、当時の政治家を交えながら、核の脅威が描かれる。物語の終盤では、ビリーの超能力は政府のスーパーコンピュータを操作できるほど強力になり、核兵器を制御して世界の混乱を収め、大団円を迎える。

もちろん、たった４曲でこうしたストーリーを語り尽くせるわけがありませんし、演奏シーンもたっぷり。完全な理解というよりは、“イメージ”を伝える作品ではありました。しかし、短いながらも懲りようはさすがロジャー。アルバム『RADIO K.A.O.S.』にはないセリフも散りばめられ、本編プレスCDでも不可欠なパーツにもなったほどです。
単に貴重な廃盤映像という以上に、“RADIO K.A.O.S.”の世界をのぞき見ることができる作品です。ストーリーをイメージする上でも、本編プレスCDを解読する意味でも不可欠な１本。世界的な研究家チームが創り出した“完全版”と共に、どうぞじっくりとご堪能ください。
