それに対して「ファンの間で最も有名な」あるいは「最もファンの目に触れた」ライヴといえば、これはもう1977年10月20日，ドイツ・ミュンヘン公演で間違いないでしょう。RAINBOWが「ON STAGE」の発表後に行ったヨーロッパツアーにおいて、あの「リッチー逮捕事件」の直後に姿を見せたこのステージ。ドイツの音楽番組”ロックパラスト”で放送された同ライヴのプロショット映像は、ファンへ三頭政治RAINBOWの凄みを強烈に焼き付けました。1994年ごろには番組の再放送も行われ、これを元とした数多くのコレクターズ・アイテムを、それも長きに渡って生み出す事となったのです（そして若い世代に新たなRAINBOWファンを生み出し続けました）。
そのプロショットは、近年ようやく公式化され、同ライヴにおけるコレクターズ・アイテムはその役目を終えたかのように思われています。実際、ライヴの全長版を収めた映像タイトルや、その音源を用いたライヴ作品は、公式作品の力を誇示するような内容に仕上がっていました。

しかし本ライヴの映像は、人口に膾炙している約115分の全長版の他に、ファンにとって思い出深い「もうひとつのバージョン」が存在しています。それが1978年８月に日本の音楽番組で放送されたダイジェスト・バージョン。リアルタイムでRAINBOWを聴いてきたベテランのファンにとっては、ある意味全長版以上に、この約50分間の素材のほうに、懐かしい思い出と強い思い入れがあるのではないでしょうか？　今回は、とあるテーパーからこの約50分のダイジェスト・バージョンを、過去最上・最良を断言できる状態のVTRマスターで入手！　当時からRAINBOWを愛して止まないマニアの方には、まさに35年前から贈られてきた、奇跡のプレゼントといえる一本です！

さっそくディスクを再生してみましょう。映像はお約束の「Over The Rainbow」そして「Kill The King」からスタートします。なにぶん35年も昔のVTRマスターだけに、現行の公式作品と見比べた時、場面によってはトラッキングノイズなどが散見されます。しかし映像の鮮明さや発色の自然さ、輪郭のシャープさは驚くほど。1994年の再放送バージョですら、大抵のアイテムでダビングが繰り返されていたような画像の甘さが感じられました。その点ではむしろ本作のほうが優れて感じます。
この日本放送版の大きな特徴は、曲それぞれの冒頭でフィーチャーされるインパクト抜群のタイトル文字、そして楽曲の歌詞に添えられた独自の対訳字幕です（先日リリースされたCHEAP TRICKの「LIVE IN BUDOKAN 1978: JAPANESE BROADCAST EDITION」ボーナス・トラック映像でも、同様の対訳字幕が観られました）。洋楽の歌詞をストレートに理解させたこの演出は、当時のロック・ファンにとって思い出深い事でしょう。
放送時間の都合によりライヴ前半は残念ながら大きく省略され、２曲目は「Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll」。’78年１月の来日公演でも取り上げられた当時の新曲をきちんと加えている点は、番組制作者のセンスを感じるでしょう。曲中におけるロニーと観客の掛け合いでは、ロニーのMCを字体の異なるテロップで表記し、観る側に配慮している所も興味深いです。
ライヴのクライマックス「Still I’m Sad」は、導入に当たるデイヴィッド・ストーンのキーボードソロ（曲中でのソロも収録）や、中盤におけるリッチーの「Beethoven 9th」もきちんと楽しめます。コージーの「1812 Overture」を用いたドラムソロは、言うまでも無く最高のダイナミズムで楽しめます！　当時この映像を観て一体どれほどのファンが圧倒され、コージーに憧れを抱いた事か。日本におけるコージー人気を本当の意味で確立したものは、会場に足を運べるファンの数が限られていた来日公演ではなく、全国的に放送されたこの映像だったのかも知れません！
そして最後はアンコールの「Do You Close Your Eyes」。クライマックスではリッチーのギター・クラッシュが炸裂します！　ショウのラストでは響き渡る轟音の中、ステージと客席を「引き」の構図で捉え、ファンが砕けたギターを奪い合う様子を一歩放れた視点から収めています。
海外におけるRAINBOWライヴの壮絶さを目の当たりにしてノックアウトされたファンは、当時非常に多かった。今の感覚で観ても、迫力・見応えともに充分以上の番組内容です！
これが35年前に、それも日本で放送されたという事実がいかに凄く、そしていかに重大であるか･･････それを改めて痛感させる50分間です！

本作に収録された映像は、公式の同日映像と較べた時、確かにクオリティ面で一歩譲るかも知れません。しかし本作には、観る側にとって収録内容だけで単純化できない訴求力があるのです。特にリアルタイムでRAINBOWそしてリッチーを追いかけてきたベテランのファンは、思い出というプラス補正により、見る人それぞれに違ったオンリーワンの輝きを放つはず。もちろん後追いのファンにとっても「時代の空気」を伝える資料として、本作の価値は計り知れません。
