ディスクを再生して気づかされるのは、大規模会場ならではの「広さ」を感じる空気感。この感触は臨場感にも反映され、ライヴがスタートした後は観客の興奮も手に取るように理解できます。それでいて楽音のダイレクト感も充分以上なのは嬉しい! リッチーのギターとグラハムのヴォーカルも迫力ある音像で聴き込めます。マスターの状態に起因して少々ノイジーな場面もありますが、リマスターによって元素材を大きく上回る聴き易さへと補正されており、やや早かったピッチも正常にアジャストされています(トレーダー間で知られるソースを圧倒的に上回るサウンドです)。聴き手はグラハム時代らしい豪快な演奏を、正しい形で余すところなく楽しめます。

ライヴの幕開けを告げる「Eyes Of The World」からウェンブリーの客席はとてつもない盛り上がりで、当時のイギリスにおけるRAINBOW人気を実感させられます。グラハムは超人的なヴォーカルを遺憾なく発揮し、「Eyes Of The World」から圧倒的なパワーで聴く者を圧倒。リッチーのプレイも好調で、「Love’s No Friend」後半ではスピーディでキレのあるソロを、「Since You Been Gone」冒頭の「Brandenburg Concert」・「Greensleeves」では繊細でクリアなトーンを聴かせるなど、会場に詰め掛けたファンの期待に応えるプレイを披露しています。
ライヴの大きな聴き所は16分を越える「Catch The Rainbow」。かつてポップスを歌っていたグラハムは楽曲のロマンティックな部分を増幅し、ダンディで都会的なイメージすら醸しています。リッチーのプレイも出色で、メロディアスなフレージングが徐々に盛り上がっていく中盤、コージーのドラムと共に劇的な昂ぶりを演出する後半など、聴き手は会場のファンと共に黙って演奏へ聴き入ってしまうでしょう。
グラハムのヴォーカルとコージーのダイナミックなドラム、リッチーの狂乱のギターが三者入り乱れて競い合うような「Lost In Hollywood」は最高の聴き応え。ドン・エイリーもメドレー中のソロパートで一瞬「Black Night」のようなメロディを弾いて会場を沸かせます。後半はオンに捉えられたコージーのソロと「1812 Overture」が大迫力で響き渡り、約30分の演奏は聴き所の連続です。
アンコールの「All Night Long」ではグラハムの声が本当に圧倒的。観客との掛け合いも母国だけあって日本公演以上にスムーズで、楽しい雰囲気がよく伝わります(掛け合いを終えてコーダに入る前、リッチーがミストーンを出している場面にも注意)。この日は「Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?」を演奏していないものの、「Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll」とラストのギタークラッシュがライヴを大迫力のうちに締めくくります。
このウェンブリー2連続公演は、「DOWN TO U.K.」で収録された前日(2月29日)の終演後、アンコールが無い事に腹を立てた観客が暴動を起こした事でも知られます。しかしこの2日目は、そんな事件が嘘のようにすら感じるほど。これだけのアンコールが聴ければ、前日のファンも暴動を起すような事はなかったでしょう。

RAINBOWは3月8日までイギリスツアーを行ったのち、5月には来日公演、そして8月には”モンスターズ・オブ・ロック”の大舞台に上がります。このウェンブリー公演における大歓声と盛り上がりを聞けば、記念すべき第一回フェスティバルのヘッドライナーに選ばれたのも納得できると言うものです。
