この、70年代のフロイドが最後に訪れた北の大地での演奏は3種類の録音ソースが現存していますが、中でもとりわけ極上の録音状態で知られるRecorder 2は1991年に登場した『COLD FRONT (AS 91PF001)』を初め、当Sigmaからも『MEMORIES OF THE EAST (Sigma 24)』のディスク2、そして『SAPPORO 1972 (Sigma 82)』のディスク3など様々なタイトルを生み出し、この唯一の札幌公演を代表するソースとして知られてきました。これに決定打として登場したのが2016年リリースの『SAPPORO 1972: DIRECT REEL MASTER (Sigma 137)』で、これはこのRecorder 2を録音した御本人から45年前の中島スポーツセンターで実際に使用したリールテープ現物を借り受けて音盤化したタイトルとなり、当然ながらこれまでで最強の72年・札幌音源となっていました。しかしそうした特級・別格のタイトルだったためこのタイトルはリリース後間もなく完売となって現在に至る訳ですが、今週末はその伝説のタイトルが、オリジナルのRecorder 2現物のリール・マスター音源と2017年最新リマスターのカップリングによるプレス盤2枚組CDとして遂に甦るのです!!!

まずディスク1には、即時完売したそのSigma 137盤をストレート・コピーしています。あの旧作を買い逃していた方にこれはまたとない朗報ですが、一方で「丸ごとコピーか!」と思われる方も居らっしゃるかもしれません。でもここで改めて、本最新作にも旧作にも使用された録音者御本人の提供によるRecorder 2現物録音の特徴を纏めてみると、何故本作のディスク1がストレート・コピーとなっているのか、その録音の重要性から理由が垣間見えてくるのです。

録音者本人の提供による、あの日実際に札幌中島スポーツセンターで録音したRecorder 2現物のリール・テープを使用。当日現場の空気を深く深く吸い込んだリール原音ならではの高音質特級サウンドは、このマスターテープからコピーされ・世代を重ねたテープで製作されたそれまでの既発盤を一瞬で駆逐する別格のものでした。そしてここにはRecorder 2現物でのみ確認出来た新事実も含んでいたのです。

そのひとつが初登場シーンで、それまでの各既発盤では未収録だった初登場シーンを合計3箇所・約2分間強ほど含んでいたのです。具体的には

“a”:「スピーク・トゥ・ミー」の導入部に約30秒間、
“b”:「狂人は心に」の中盤に約35秒間、
“c”:「狂気日食」終演後~「吹けよ風、呼べよ嵐」の演奏開始までのサウンドチェック・シーンに約1分05秒間ほど

…なのですが、このうち” c ” は新発見の最重要シーンでした。というのも通常ならショウの前半(=試作版” 狂気 “の完全再現)と後半を分ける為、ここで約20分間ほどの休憩が挟まれる訳ですが、この札幌公演だけはそこで入る筈の休憩が” 無い “唯一の72年日本公演であった事が、このノーカット・ノンストップ録音のRecorder 2で初めて判明したのです。

当日の会場内には勿論クアドロフォニック=4チャンネルスピーカーが設置されていました。録音者本人の弁として「その効果により、音が場内を回った時に後ろの音が大きめに入っている」とのコメントがあり、実際このリール原音でもその音響効果が音圧の変化となってしばしば感じられます。しかし、世代を重ねたテープを使用した各既発盤ではこの効果は薄れ、殆ど感じられません。

またこのリール・マスターから派生していった各既発タイトルの殆どには、コピーされた際に生じた定位のズレ(※ 僅かに左寄り)が生じていました。しかしこのリール現物には当然そうした定位のズレは存在せず、音像は最後まで中央に完全固定しています。

つまりは、あまりにリアルな音質・あまりに重要なシーンを含んでいるため、手を加える余地が無いのです。特に「狂気日食」終演後から僅か2分程度のインターバルで「吹けよ風、呼べよ嵐」が始まる異例のショウ展開・スピード感は鳥肌モノでしょう。だからこそ、これらが本作ではRecorder 2現物のオリジナル音源として、ディスク1に改めてスレート・コピーされている訳です。

一方ディスク2は元々優れていたあの音質に改めてスポットを当てた更なる高音質ディスクとなっており、今回初めて最新機材と最新技術で調整した2017年版のリマスター・サウンドを収録しました。具体的にはあの音にディレイ効果=サラウンド感を少し加え、その作業で少し音が細くなった成分をオリジナル原音と組み合わせて自然な響きが出るよう補正したものですが、これがまたRecorder 2ならではの精緻な音色と響きをグッと惹き出した特上サウンドで甦っているのです。音像全体を引き締める為にやや硬めの音味にもしてあるため、原音よりシャープで広がりが出た音像も大きな魅力でしょう。

例えば導入「スピーク・トゥ・ミー」の終盤でグワッと太い音が立ち上がりますが、旧盤(※=ディスク 1。以降、旧盤について触れる箇所はディスク1とお考え下さい)の同部分よりその肉厚感がグッと増し、音に確かな重みが加わっているのが分かる筈です。「生命の息吹き」でのギルモアの歌声の近さも精度が上がり、肉声の生々しさや中音域の音色が一層鮮やかでマッシヴになりました。「走り回って」では元々優れていたリール原音の良さを見つめ直す仕上がりが実現し、この曲で出てくる複雑な音の一つ一つがもっと細部まで掴める様になっています。また今回、音に若干のサラウンド感が出る様になった事で、場内のクアドロフォニックによる音のドラマ性も巧みに惹き出されているのが分かるでしょう。「タイム」ではイントロで聴けるタムの音が既発盤より引き締まった音で出てきます。異常なほど近いリックとギルモアによる2声のハーモニーも一段と鮮明になり、ギターが散らすジャリジャリした音の鋭さも向上しているため、低音域の振幅とエッジの効いた高音域のブレンド感が原音の新しい可能性に気付かせてくれる筈です。初期の「虚空のスキャット」こと「The Mortality Sequence」では、場内に広がるモノローグSEの明度と解像度が+1ほど上がり、テープ・コラージュによる朗読の浮遊感とドラマティックさも輪郭の鋭さを伴って甦ります。終盤で出てくるオルガンの響き(※ 3分10秒付近~)も音色の輪郭が掴み易くなり、サウンドの奥行きと広がりも旧盤より深度を増しているのが分かる筈です。こうした心地良い音の硬質感は「マネー」冒頭のレジスター音とベースの音触、そして中盤で登場するエレキピアノの音色にも現れ、あのアヴァンギャルドなアプローチがリール原音よりグッと芯の入ったサウンドで聴けるのも嬉しいところでしょう。またギター・ソロ(※ これも解像度が上がった超至近音です!)の後ろで鳴っているシンバルとハイハットも明瞭感が増し、旧盤より頭ひとつ抜け出たサウンドで愉しめる様になりました。

「アス・アンド・ゼム」では図抜けて精緻な音色が耳元に流れ込んできます。導入部、2声の動きとその後ろで通奏されるオルガンの威力ある響きもアッパー感漲っていますし、この札幌でのフロイドがどれだけきめ細やかで鋭い表現をしていたのかがもう一歩踏み込んで理解出来るでしょう。「狂人は心に」も旧盤で充分良かったサウンドが更に響きの威力を発揮し、中音域から抜け出そうとする音色の移ろいにますます耳を奪われる筈です。「吹けよ風、呼べよ嵐」では開始前にあるチューニングの音、周囲の話し声がこれまでより明瞭で、演奏導入のベース音の極太感も増しているのが分かりますが、注目したいのはそのベースの後ろにあるドラムスでしょう。打音がやや埋もれていた印象が薄らぎ、リズムの動きが旧盤より手応えある音で追える様になっています。そのリズムが一旦消えるシーンもサラウンド感が出た事で音の浮遊感が更に深く実感出来る様になり、モノローグ後に飛び出すギターとオルガンの鋭い響きも表現のメリハリが更に強く感じられる様になりました。終曲後に入るチューニング・シーンもこれまで聴けたものより明度が上がり、音像の一新感を再認識される筈です。そして訪れる「ユージン、斧に気をつけろ」は最高値に極まった透明度と質感が大きな魅力です。或る意味今回のリマスター成果が一番強く感じられる一曲と言える仕上がりになっていて、演奏音の精緻さは勿論のこと、音と音の間隙に漂うミステリアスな音色の表情変化まで更に高い精度で御愉しみ戴ける筈です。また終曲部ギリギリまで多様に変化させた最終日ならではの絶叫と苦悶のスクリームも肉音の鋭さが際立ち、リール原音の魅力を最大限惹き出した音の洗浄力に驚かれること確実です。

…等々、文章後半はリマスターされたディスク2を中心に音触の違いをざっと書き出してみましたが、でもこの最新リマスターによって導かれるのは実はディスク1に収録した既発盤の音、すなわちRecorder 2原音の器の大きさです。45年前の札幌でフロイドが唯一残した音の鼓動のストレートな再現と跳躍こそがこの最新作のねらいであり、目指す到達点でもあった訳で、それが結実した究極のカップリングがいまここに現実のものとなりました。即時完売した旧Sigma 137盤の御購入を逃していた方は勿論のこと、お持ちの方にもこれは絶対に聴き逃せない72年札幌公演・Recorder 2の頂点盤となっていますので、今週末は是非本作をお試し戴きたいと思います!!!
