1980年2月のナッソー・コロシアム5DAYSといえば、御存知の通りTHE WALL公演初年度のかなり早い時期に行われた公演です。最初の公演地は米国カリフォルニアでのスポーツ・アリーナ6DAYSでしたが、それ以前のリハーサルを含めてもこの日はあの大規模なショウが公開されてから僅か9回目、最初期とも言える公演日です。ところでこのナッソー2日目が聴けるタイトルは2011年頃に海外のゴッドファーザー・レーベルから出た『TEARING DOWN THE COLISEUM WALL (Godfather GRBOX05)』という6枚組ボックスの中の1枚として知られている程度で、他は私家製のプライヴェート盤CDRや未ブートの音源(=同日の別ソース)が3つほど散見されるくらいです。当然ながらこの公演に関してはSigmaレーベルでもリリースされた事は無く、当店のギフトボーナスとしても音盤化した前例はありません。しかし80年度の初期公演でここまでレベルの高い録音が存在していたのにもかかわらず、36年間、メジャーなブートレッグ・タイトルとして、あまり流通していなかったのは信じ難い見落としと言えるでしょう。

そしてそのサウンドがまさに別格なのです。THE WALL公演のAUD録音は幾つも残されていますが、僅か9回目という最初期の音源がここまで突出した優秀なサウンドで愉しめるものは殆ど例がありません。少し調べてみると本作ソースは録音者所有のマスターテープから後にDATにダイレクト・トランスファーされたもののクローンと考えられ、世代としては1st Genという事になる様ですが、その音像の鮮やかさを耳に残すタフな音色のアタック感は特異とも言えるA級の聴き応えを持っています。(前述の『TEARING DOWN THE COLISEUM WALL (Godfather GRBOX05)』も同じマスターが使用されていますが、ジェネレーションの差から来る音質の差は歴然としています。)。しかもショウ第1部と第2部を繋ぐインターバル中の場内の様子や、インターバル中から突然スタートする「Hey You」を1音目からパーフェクトに捉えている80年初期音源という点もこの録音を更に特別なものにしています。唯一のウィークポイントとしてテープチェンジ、ないしはなんらかの録音トラブルによる僅かなカットが5箇所で存在しているものの、各シーン短いものでは約2秒、最長でも約10秒程度ですし、これらの欠落シーンは他に3種存在が確認されている同日の別ソース(※ 未ブート音源)から最良と思われるもので補填し、全てのシーンをノンストップ・シームレスで聴き通せるよう完璧に補修済みです。ただ本録音が突出して優れている為にこれら5箇所のシーンでは若干の音質差を感じるかもしれませんが、各補填シーンはどれも短いですし、Sigmaの精鋭エンジニアが丁寧にトリートメントしていますから繋ぎの違和感はまず感じないでしょう。というよりも、これによってこの36年間殆ど知られていなかった驚くべき特上録音が全て当日の演奏で聴き通せる仕上がりは熱烈なマニアでも唸るに違いありません。

また本録音のもうひとつの特徴として、幾つかの曲間で聴ける録音者や周囲の会話も独特でユニークさと緊迫感がある事もトピックとして挙げられます。まずディスク冒頭ではゲイリー・ユドマン(※ Gary Yudman)による上演中の注意事項を含む開演前のスピーチが完全版で聴けるのですが、ここではカーター大統領から電報が届いているとか、ボブ・ディランがどうの、ニール・ヤングがどうのという他愛の無いジョークでこの日ならではの盛り立てをまず愉しめます。そして「In The Flesh?」で音像が左右に一気に広がりを増し、見通しの良いダイナミックなサウンドが低音域の生々しい迫力と共に飛び出すのです。「The Thin Ice」では静かな音や微弱音も確実に拾っているのが分かると思いますが、出音コントラストが鮮やかに出て音像がキリッと立ち、曲後半の展開では硬質で美麗な低音域の威力が見事に出る姿に酔い痴れるでしょう。「Mother」は本マスターの4分03秒で一瞬テープチェンジによるが欠落が生じていましたが、同日の別ソースで補填していますので曲の流れを全く損なわずお聴き戴けます。しかも復元されたサウンドはタフでウルトラ級の解像度を持つに至っており、ここからがいよいよ本録音本来の威力を発揮してゆくのです。「Goodbye Blue Sky」では冒頭00分30秒付近で観客が放ったと思われる投げ込み花火の炸裂音が聴こえ、77年7月のマジソン・スクエア・ガーデンで起きた悪夢(=演奏を中断して怒号するロジャーの姿)を想起させる緊張感が走ります。ロジャーやバンドはその炸裂音に動じる事無くクールにショウを進行していますが、演奏側にも主催者側にもオーディエンス全体にも神経がピリピリするこのドキュメンタリーなシーンも本録音の聴きどころです。「What Shall We Do Now」もマスターでは00分50秒でテープチェンジによる音の瞬間ワープが一瞬生じていましたがこれも別ソースで完璧に補填し、違和感ゼロの仕上がりになっています。終演後にロジャーのいつになく御機嫌なMCが入るのも要チェックでしょう。「One Of My Turns」は冒頭のセリフの声が近く、そしてロジャーの声は更に間近で耳元に届き、語りと歌を携えてのアンサンブル突入が極上の感動と興奮を呼び覚ましますし、「Don’t Leave Me Now」では” 先生 “の吐息とロジャーの声が異様とも言えるほどの近さで飛び出し、ここに至って本録音は殆どSBD級の迫力と解像度に高まります。2分43秒付近にはテープチェンジによる音飛びが存在しましたが、これも他の同日別ソースからの完璧な補填で繋いでいますので流れの違和感を感じる事はまず無いでしょう。「The Last Few Bricks」はタフな演奏がマッシヴに飛び出してギターのディレイや僅かなオルガンの音色も特上の艶を伴い、「Goodbye Cruel World」も”Goodbye”の節回しを僅かに変えて歌っている姿が麗しい透明サウンドで耳元に届き、極上の聴き心地でショウ前半が終ります。

ディスク2のショウ後半は冒頭でインターミッション中の場内の様子を捉えており、ドキュメンタリー録音としての価値を更に高めています。この間、録音者と思われる人物(達)による「ハッピー・バースデー、Ziggy」「100Box程欲しい?」「貰えるなら嬉しいね」等と意味不明な会話も含まれているのですが、幕間の場内の様子が約2分間も収録されている点は実に貴重です。それゆえ本録音は「Hey You」も出だし1音目から捉えているのですが、この事から録音者は前日(=ナッソー公演初日)かそれ以前のL.A カリフォルニア公演を一度観てショウの構成を知っていたのかもしれません。ちなみに” 81年 “のドルトムンド公演6日目を素晴らしいサウンドで収録した『DORTMUND 1981 6TH NIGHT (Sigma 153)』もこの「Hey You」が1音目からノーカット収録されている貴重な録音ですが、本録音は前年度” 80年 “の初期公演ですから、客電が点いた状態でショウ後半が突然始まるという構成を知っている人がまだ少なかった筈です。だからこそここでの「Hey You」が冒頭ノーカットで、しかも演奏開始前のインターバルの様子が約2分間含まれている点は実に意義深いと言えるでしょう。ドキュメンタリー的な聴きどころも続いており、例えば「Nobody Home」では囁く様に、語り掛ける様に歌うロジャーを真っ直ぐなサウンドで捉えている一方で、本録音に気付いた女性の警備員がこちらに近付き「録音してるの?」と声を掛けてくる緊張感高まるシーン(※ 1分57秒付近~)が含まれているのです。録音者の男性は「違うよ。マイクロフォンだ」と返答するのですが、そうした録音風景の危険な生々しさも他の録音物には無い臨場感を一層高めています。一方音質面では「Bring The Boys ~」でのノック音は左右から聴こえており、これは録音位置の手掛かりやナッソー会場の音響がよく分かるものとなっていますし、「Comfortably Numb」もスポットが当たるギルモアの姿に沸き立つ場内の大歓声を超A級サウンドの演奏音と共に完璧に捉えている点も特筆されます。「In The Flesh ?」も主題回帰するマッシヴなサウンドの広がり、特にタムの鈍い音色が非常に良く聴こえるのが特徴で、途中で僅かに生じるタイミングのズレも実にリアルな特上音質で御愉しみ戴けるでしょう。「Run Like Hell」はマスターの4分11秒付近でテープチェンジによる音の欠落が生じていましたが、これも同日別ソースで補填する事で元の姿をパーフェクト復元しています。これによりベースのコリコリした音やドラムのアプローチ(※これも他日には無い珍しいアプローチを時々しています)が、この日ならではのグルーヴ感で御愉しみ戴けますし、ギルモアならではのカッティング音も透明感と切れ味最高の姿で堪能出来るでしょう。「Waiting For The Worms」でも多声部の重なりによる声のバラエティと、” ピンク “がメガホンで煽動する声が彩り鮮やかなハー
モニーで現れ、「The Trial」でロジャーが歌い上げる姿も後の公演には無い初々しさが精緻に届くサウンドとなっています。崩壊シーンも地鳴りの音を真っ直ぐでブレの無い振幅のあるリアルサウンドで強烈です。

いつになくゴキゲンな曲間MC、この日ならではの冒頭スピーチ、またショウの前半と後半を結ぶインターバル中の様子が暫く含まれていること、「Hey You」が出だし1音目から収録されていること、そして77年の悪夢を髣髴させる投げ込み花火の炸裂音、警備員から疑惑の声を掛けられる録音中の緊張感、果ては幾つかの曲で演奏アプローチが微妙に違っていたり、或いは最後の壁崩壊で地鳴りが鳴り終らないうちに「Outside The Wall」の旋律がスタートするなど、似通った内容のものが多いTHE WALL音源の中でこれほど聴きどころが多い録音は極めて珍しいと言えるでしょう。これは言い換えればTHE WALLというショウを様々な視点からパーフェクトに照らし出してくれる秀逸なディスクと言えますし、何よりもそれが36年間殆ど知られていなかった極上音質で聴き通せる事こそが本作最大の特徴となっているのです。今週末は是非とも本作を手に取り、全ての公演日が5時間以内に完売したという伝説の80年ナッソー公演のリアル・ドキュメンタリーに触れてみて下さい。冒頭からディスクエンドまで、どこを切っても興味を掻き立てられる未体験のTHE WALLに全く耳が離せなくなる、魅惑の最新タイトルとなっています!!
