ところが2015年、遂にオークランドのマスター・カセットを最新機材で一切の劣化無く24bit/96khzの高音質でデジタル・トランスファーしてみせたバージョンが登場。Reinhart Holhweinという人物によって録音された究極のオーディエンス録音が遂に究極の形で封じ込められた。それを元にした限定のプレスCDタイトルが同じく2015年にリリースされたのがSIGMAの「OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT」でした。それまでオークランドの決定版とされてきた「DEFINITIVE OAKLAND」のディフィニティブ感ですら軽く吹き飛ばしてしまったほどのアッパー版のリリースは世界中のマニアに衝撃を与えたもの。
フロイドのエバーグリーンなライブ音源たるオークランドのベストバージョンが現れてくれた。その衝撃はあまりに大きく、それと同時に一聴して解るほどの生々しさが聴く者を圧倒しました。これぞマスター・カセットだからこそ再現できた、明瞭なクリアネスでさらに浮き彫りとなった演奏の輪郭、そして何よりもすべての音域の再生力が過去の音源よりも明らかに秀でていた点、それもマスターであることを実感させてくれたものです。その為「DEFINITIVE OAKLAND」のリリース時とは違い、2015年の「OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT」リリースはロングセラーどころかあっという間のSold Outを記録し、改めてオークランドの揺るぎない人気を痛感させられました。
問題はこのエバーグリーン音源であるオークランドが入手困難になってしまったということ。先にも触れた「DEFINITIVE OAKLAND」のような一定期間の継続した流通がなかったことにより、「OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT」はSold Outの直後から再リリース、あるいは追加プレスの要望が絶えませんでした。数多いフロイドのオーディエンス録音の中でも最高峰、さらには1977年アルバム『ANIMALS』に伴うツアーの中でも最高の音源であることを考えれば、当然のことでしょう。逆に言えば1977年オークランドはこれ以上のものが望めないほどの到達点が「OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT」だったのです。
そうなると、Reinhart Holhweinによって録音された音源の新たなバージョンを探すまでもなく、むしろ「OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT」の再発こそがオークランド・アイテムのベストであることは当然のこと。二年前から再登場を待ち続けてくれていたマニアの皆様、本当にお待たせいたしました。
その究極な音質はもちろんですが、演奏内容も極上。1977年のツアーの舞台が北米に移ってからというもの、演奏はストロングなヘヴィネスを増す一方。会場がスタジアムであったことはその大きな要因でしょう。そして7月のマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンで連日のように騒がしい観客に煩わされた結果、ロジャー・ウォーターズはモントリオールでブレイキング・ポイントに達してしまう。その点オークランドは北米ツアーにおけるヘヴィネスの増大がいい塩梅だった時期を最高の音質で記録したという点でも価値が高い。
