Let me introduce. This time it was discovered in the Pittsburgh PA, Three Rivers stadium performance in the United States on 20th June 1975. It is now being torn down, but this is the home of the professional sports team in the western part of Pennsylvania and it seems that it was a very popular place as a venue for various events at the time. It is this Sigma latest work which made it into the world harmonic sooner than anywhere, but its original sound is a cassette master sound recorded using three TDK ED C – 60 (※ first half of the show One tape in the second half, one in the latter half, and the introduction of encore and ‘Echoes’ in the remaining one). 世界中のファンが待ち望むフロイドの完全初登場音源….勿論そんな事はそうそう滅多にあるものではありませんが、しかし年に1つか2つそうしたものが出てくると、私達は演奏についての興味深い視点をまた新たに学べる喜びで胸躍るものです。それが音質良ければ尚更というところですが、それはさすがにムシが良過ぎる….いえ、今週末はそんな至福の贅沢が久々に現実のものとなるのです!!

御紹介致しましょう。このたび発見されたのは1975年6月20日の米国ピッツバーグPA、スリー・リバーズ・スタジアム公演です。現在はもう取り壊されていますがここはかつてペンシルバニア西部のプロスポーツ・チームの本拠地で、当時様々なイベントの開催地としても非常に人気のある場所だった様です。記録によるとこの日のフロイドは約50,000人(!!)の前で演奏した事が分かっているのですが、それを記録した録音は何故かこれまで不完全収録にして音質劣悪、しかも曲順ゴチャ混ぜで収録時間僅か36分しか無いテーパー音源(※ 便宜上、一応” Recorder 1 “としておきましょうか…)のみが知られていました。そうしたクオリティの低さですから勿論これまで一度も音盤化された事は無く、一部のハードコア・マニアのみがその劣悪なRecorder 1によってショウの一部分を知るに留まっていたのが現実です。

しかし今回発掘されたのは何とショウ丸ごとの2時間16分テイク。しかもRecorder 1とは完全に別録音の” Recorder 2 “で、これまで約42年間全く知られていなかった超秘蔵ソースなのです!! これによってこの日のショウ全容が42年振りに初めて姿を現しただでも快挙なのですが、これが衝撃の高音質で突如現れたのですからさァ大変です。約42年前のスタジアムAUD録音とは到底信じられないほど演奏音が近く鮮明で、音の通り具合も抜群に優れており、聴けば聴き進むほどその音の良さに驚きが連発する逸品ソースなのです!!

これをどこよりも早く世界初音盤化したものがこのSigma最新作となっているのですが、その原音はTDK ED C-60を3本使って録音されたカセットマスター・サウンドです(※ ショウ前半でテープ1本、後半で1本、そしてアンコールの導入と「Echoes」が、残る1本に収録)。ここで注目したいのは彼が録音にEDシリーズを使用している点でしょう。これは75年当時のTDKノーマル・ポジションで一般的だったSDタイプの上位モデルで、一般層というよりはむしろオーディオ・マニア向けに発売されたテープなのです。実際これを書いているSigmaスタッフの私(※ カセットテープ・マニアです。笑)もよく使っていましたが、SDとは聴感上で明確に違いの出るテープで、重厚感のあるくっきりした音質で録れるのが特徴でした。つまり当時このテープを使用している事自体が収録
音の良さをそのまま物語っていると言っても過言ではなく、本作はその特徴(=肉厚で透明)をそのまま継承した原音力抜群のサウンドとなっているのです。

ただネット上に公開されたそれは60分テープの性質上、テープチェンジによって約30分毎にカットが入ったままでした。具体的には「Shine On … (Parts I-V) 」のイントロ冒頭と「Money」のギター・ソロでほんの一瞬ですが、本作では世界初音盤化にあたってこれをクロスフェイド処理し、全く違和感なく聴き通せるようにしています(※ 幸いにしてどのカット・ポイントも聴感上殆ど差し障りの無い、音と音の間隙の様な箇所でテープ・フリップが生じており、実際こう書かなければ元テープにカットがあるなどまず気が付かない筈です)。しかしこの他はヒスノイズも特に無く、僅かに生じていたピッチの狂いを調整した程度に留めています。でも21世紀のデジタル音響技術と現代のサウンドセンス、そして音質には特に厳しい当レーベルのスタッフ達が聴いてもそのくらいしか補正の余地と必要が無いほど図抜けた録音状態で残っていたのですから、その質の高さにはただただ驚かされるばかりなのです。

録音はまず演奏開始前にチューニング・シーンが約2分間たっぷり含まれているのですが、ここで聞こえる各楽器の音がかなり近い事から演奏音への期待値が一気に頂点に達すると思いますが、同時にこの録音ポジションがかなり良かった事も伺えるでしょう。そして始まる「Raving and Drooling」でその期待と予感が大きく的中します。質感豊かなベースの音色に導かれて驚異的に生々しい音色がグッと湧き上がり、EDテープ特有の厚みある深い響きが大きく揺れながら、あの初期表現の曲想が素晴らしいパッセージで立ち上がるのです。「You Gotta Be Crazy」では官能的な響きがゆっくり場に広がり、途中でミス・ワードを含むギルモアの歌声とオルガンの音色が外へ外へと伸びてゆく姿に打ち震えるでしょう。ギターとオルガンが一気に泣き上げる例の箇所も2音の旋律が電光石火の如くぶつかる姿が鮮明に現れるだけでなく、埋もれがちなベースとドラムスの動きもバッチリ聴こえており、表現の隈取りとスケール感がこの日は特に大きかった事がパーフェクトに受け取れるのです。場内の至るところで炸裂する爆竹の音(※ そして更には誰かのくしゃみの音)も入っており、現場のドキュメンタリー感溢れる営みが聴けるのも嬉しいところでしょう。「Shine On…(Parts I-V)」では導入の例のギターが濡れそぼった湿り気のある音色で飛び出し、異常なほど生々しい音色と響きで立ち上がります。歌唱が始まってからもアンサンブルに美しい陰影が幾つも生まれる様子が確認出来ますし、途中に入るディック・バリーによるサックスの近さと音艶も抜群で、そのダイナミックな音の膨らみと旋律の広がりには目を見張るに違いありません。後半の「Shine On…(Parts VI-IX)」も強烈で、濃密な弾き込みと溜めて吐き出す疾走感が緊張感溢れる超至近サウンドで出てきます。ベースの音色も余裕すら感じさせる低音域の量感に驚かれる筈ですし、後半のファンキーなジャムは他日の演奏よりかなり長めに演奏している事にも注目です。

ショウ後半は導入「Speak To Me」の鼓動音から現代サラウンドもひっくり返るほどの凄まじい音像が現れます。しかもこれを何と約6分間(!!)もノーカット収録しており、これにまず仰天されるでしょう。当時の録音でこれほど長く第2部の立ち上がりを記録しているのは稀です。「Time」では単音同士の衝突による響きの揺らぎと輝きが立体的に出ており、録音機があった位置から当日のクアドロフォニックがどの様な効果で聞こえていたかが生々しい音像で掴めます。またここはギターの鋭い表現と強い出音に驚かされますが、これに潰されず女性陣のバックアップ・ハーモニーも鮮明に拾っているのですからびっくりです。「The Great Gig In The Sky」ではギター単音とピアノ旋律の散らしが異常な鮮明さで録れており、そこから一気に女性コーラスが展開するシーンでは晩夏夕刻の陽射しの様な、強く眩しい音の拡散が愉しめるでしょう。「Money」は音の瞬発力に長けたシーンが連発する一曲です。ジャリジャリした音色のギター・ソロもギルモアらしい大胆な跳躍音階が間近な響きで追える要チェック・シーンとなっており、終曲まで一気に聴かせる録音力の高さが際立ちます。「Us and Them」では鋭いオルガンの音色に導かれ、肉厚でダイナミックなアンサンブルが濃密な聴き応えを残します。中音域から抜け出るように現れるギルモアの声と女性コーラスの対比も鮮明で伸びがあり、これもまたEDテープの特性が良く出たシーンと言えそうです。「Brain Damage」では各楽器と3つの声部で編み出されるこの日ならではの音の営みを掴み易い音で辿れるだけでなく、終曲部で大きく溜めを作りつつ「Eclipse」へ向かう音楽的な抑揚も凄まじい原音力で届けてくれます。終曲後にチューニング・シーンを約1分30秒強ほど含んでいるのも嬉しいボーナスと言えるでしょう。「Echoes」は音の艶が上々で、ソナー音とスライド・ギターによる彫りの深い響きの交差が眩しく際立ちます。アホウドリの鳴き声も豊かな音楽的行間を感じさせる近さと鋭さが宿っており、サックスが彩る75年らしい終盤もその音艶が綺麗に滲み、この日の音楽が高く飛翔してゆく姿を最後まで克明に追えるのです。

これほど密度の高い音楽的なエネルギーが約42年間も息を潜め、それが初めて世に出る恍惚と陶酔。本作の魅力はまさにそれに尽きると思います。私達がこれまで知らなかった75年演奏特有の興味深いアプローチにそこかしこで、しかも非常に質の高い音質で出逢える悦びは格別ですし、次にこんな良音源に出逢えるのはいつになるか分かりません。是非ともこのフロイド音源史に新しく加わった眩し過ぎる1ページを今週末、このSigma最新作でお愉しみ下さい。完全初登場の大発掘新音源、その世界初音盤化に相応しいプレス盤2CDです!!

で見る事が出来ますので、是非御覧下さい。それを見るとこの日はバンドがまだ夕暮れ時、陽が出ている時刻に最初のセットの殆どを演奏していたこと、ショウ後半の” ダークサイド “全曲再現では日没になっており、暗闇を待ってからそのショウ後半がスタートしていたこと、また円形スクリーンの背後に恐らく空気で膨らむ仕掛けになっている巨大な白いピラミッドがある様子も視覚情報でよく分かります。また当日実際にこのショウを鑑賞された方のコメント(英文)も寄せられており、それを読むとこの日、非公式音源の蔓延を防ぐ為に主催者側のガードが固く、ショウを撮影または録画することが非常に困難だったこと、郊外から集まってきた当時の多様な聴衆の様子、また演奏中に踊り出す観客も居たなど、バンドの意図とオーディエンスとの間に出現した” 壁 “、すなわち77年のツアー終盤にああなってしまったその初期衝動の始まりがこの日あった事など、非常に興味深いレポートも載っています。是非併せて御覧下さい!
