Sigmaレーベル初となる、フロイド72年の重要音源が緊急リリースです! 収録されているのは1972年10月21日のロンドン・ウェンブリー公演で、この日の公演を収録した既発タイトルはGodfatherレーベルから2009年にリリースされていた『THE OXFAM CONCERT (Godfather Records GR 361/362)』のみでした。熱心なファンの方は御存知と思いますが、この日は「Money」と「Us And Them」に72年公演で唯一サックス奏者を入れて演奏した公演で、その音楽的な重要度はフロイド72年全公演中でもトップクラスです。しかしその反面、何故か他のレーベルからは日の目を当てられずにポツンと穴が開いていた公演日でもありました。当Sigmaレーベルのバックカタログにもこの日を収録したタイトルは無かったのですが、しかしこれには然るべき理由があったのです。それは、『THE OXFAM CONCERT』に使用されたソースは随所で修復不可能なノイズが散見されるものだった為で、恐らくこれが理由で他レーベルも二の足を踏んでいたのでしょう。当Sigmaとしてもリリースするならばもっと良好な上位音源でと、長らくその機会を待っていた訳ですが、今年になってその煩わしいノイズが全く無いジェネ若の音源を遂に発見し、満を持して今回のリリースに至った訳です!

“Master Clone”という触れ込みで登場した今回のテイクは、既発Godfather盤(※以下、”既発盤”とします)とよりずっと鮮度の良いジェネ若サウンドで収録されています。先々週に当店からリリースされた72年ブリュッセル公演の決定版『BRUSSELS AFFAIR (Sigma 114)』の様な驚異的優良音質という訳ではありませんが、しかし72年という年代を考えればその録音水準の高さは充分過ぎるものを備えたAUD録音で、何よりも既発盤で目立っていたヒスノイズがほぼ100%無くなっているのが最大の特徴と言えるでしょう。音像も安定しており、聴き疲れしない見通しの良さも大きな魅力となっています。因みにこの公演は「Benefit for War on Want」のチャリティ・ショウだった様ですが、その演奏内容の充実度、特に第一部”狂気”に関して言えば72年全公演中でも別格の名パフォーマンスを繰り広げており、音符の一つ一つに毛細血管が張り巡らされているのが分かるような、まさに血の通った濃密な演奏となっているのです。その名演が、今回は完全ノイズレスのジェネ若音像で蘇っているのですから、これを耳にする興奮は既発盤とは比べ物になりません!

では早速その”狂気”から、かいつまんで内容を御紹介致しましょう。導入「Speak To Me」の00分36秒付近でハウリング音が聴こえますが、これの出音の近さからも既発盤とは透明度と奥行きが違っているのが判然としています。「Breathe」ではエコーの掛かり具合が既発盤より濃淡が深く、かつストレートに耳に届いてくるのもお分かり戴けるでしょう。「On The Run」は後半4分49秒付近~次の「Time」冒頭00分13秒にかけて既発盤同様にテープの劣化が感じられる箇所が出てきますが、ここで面白いのは既発で聴ける音よりも音の輪郭が明瞭に感じられる点です。僅かなアナログドロップ(左チャンネル奥から右に度々揺れながら3・4箇所。既発盤も同じ)は確かにあるのですが、驚くことに本作は出音の連続性が既発盤ほど酷く損なわれておらず、部分劣化の中にもサウンドの際立ちや音の芯がしっかり感じられるのです。更に既発盤ではこの「Time」の4分39秒付近で一瞬の音抜け・音飛びが存在し、以降も4分43秒付近からの継続的なノイズ発生、果ては5分04秒付近でもう一度音飛びが発生するなど、クオリティ的にかなりの難がありました。しかし本作にはこうした諸問題が一切発生しておらず、テープに本来記録されていた瑞々しい演奏がストレス無くお楽しみ戴けます。ノイズの発生箇所ひとつ取っても両者でこれほど明確な差がある点こそが、ジェネ若=本作の劇的な優位性を示す証拠でしょう。またノイズの差と言えば次の「The Great Gig…」も顕著で、既発盤では「Time」後半~「The Great Gig..」の00分23秒付近まで発生していたヒスノイズも本作では完全に消えて無くなっています。同様に「Breathe (Reprise)」も既発では中盤1分28秒付近から2分43秒付近にかけて約1分半も鬱陶しいノイズが延々と発生していましたが(※その後2分57秒付近からも一瞬発生)、これらも本作では皆無です。透明感と見通しの良い音像の中を、本来の瑞々しいサウンドがたゆたう様子には自然と鳥肌が立つこと間違い無しです。

さて、この日の公演を非常に特別なものにしているのが周知の通りここでの「Money」と「Us And Them」です。後の両曲で定番化するサックス奏者を加えたパフォーマンスをこの日は72年で唯一披露した演奏となっており、どちらの曲も(別の楽器が加わっているというのに)音の整理や構成がしっかり感じられる点は大変興味深いものがあります。しかしそんな「Money」でも、既発盤では肝心のサックス演奏真っ最中の2分49秒付近から散発的にノイズが発生しており、せっかくの演奏を聴き辛いものにしていました。同様に「Us And Them」も既発では3分54秒手前辺りからノイズが継続的に発生し始め、ここも興味深いサックス演奏を邪魔していた事が以前からこの音源と接するファンの悩みの種でした。でもジェネ若の本作ではそうしたノイズが一切無いばかりか音の解像度も僅かながら上がっており、サックスを伴ったこの日限りの音色の綴れ折りが豊かなサウンドで完璧に蘇っているのです。同じく「Eclipse」も既発では全体的にノイズが発生していた”難あり”の一曲で、特にコーダに向けて幾重にもメロディが畳み掛けられてゆくシーンでは嫌味の様にノイズが混在していました。このため既発は第一部の締め括りとショウそのものの印象をも消化不良的なイメージにしていたのですが、本作ではこれも別次元の様に視界良好です。ヒスノイズが跡形もなく消え失せた事でこの演奏から受け取れるものがより豊かなものとなり、これこそがこの日の特別な”狂気”を聴き終えた本物の余韻だと深く頷かれるでしょう。

第2部開始の「One Of These Days」はこの日、中盤まで若干ドライヴ感を抑えた重ための表現と、そのドライヴ感を激しく打ち出した後半部との対比が魅力です。これは言い換えると、これら静と動のパートを繋ぐブリッジ部の展開(※3分31秒~。即ち、リズムが一切無くなっているパート)がこの上なく不気味な迫力で挟まれている事を示唆しており、このブリッジ部分も既発盤以上の妖しさと解像度を伴って耳に迫ってきます。続く「Echoes」ではこのソース特有の全体音の見通しの良さが既発以上に出ているのが特徴です。冒頭の浮遊感やゴツゴツと動くベースの運動性も見事に捉えていますし、アンサンブルのマイルドで程好い出音も耳に優しく届きます。また曲中にあるアホウドリの鳴き声やソナーの様な音など、静かではあるものの決して従順ではないサウンド達が走馬灯の様に駆け巡る様子も素晴らしい音像で記録されており、終曲に向かってダイナミックに膨らんでゆくサウンドドラマをつぶさに報告してくれます。

「太陽讃歌」は既発盤の最大・最悪の欠点として、11分20秒付近から徐々にノイズが発生し、やがて曲が聴けないほど酷くなって「Blues」になり、そこでも解消されないままノイズの嵐のうちにディスクエンドを迎えるという酷い状態で記録されていました。しかし本作ではその酷いノイズが混入する前の演奏音が完璧に保たれており、最後の「Blues」まで全くノイズが混入しません。この2曲が均整の取れたクリアな音像でディスクエンドまで聴き通せるのは史上初ですし、本作最大のアドヴァンテージと言えるでしょう。これにより「太陽讃歌」では中間部後半の特徴的なシーン、即ち他日よりも混沌としたサウンド・イメージを長く展開している様子(※7分30秒付近~9分30秒付近。他日よりも長く、そして一風変わったイメージで濃淡豊かな描写を繰り広げています)が濃密な描写力を兼ねて蘇り、混沌から徐々にリズムと旋律を取り戻してゆく様子が既発とは比べ物にならない上位音像で御堪能戴ける様になっています。また「Blues」にしても、既発では曲全体を覆っていたノイズが完全に消えた事で雑味の無い響きが真っ直ぐに耳を潤してくれる驚きがあると思います。これを聴くと、ここでの演奏が単なるアンコールの付け足しジャムではなく、綴れ合うメロディが聴き手とプレイヤー相互に作用するフロイド流の機知に富んだブルースであった事が伝わってくるでしょう。4分25秒付近から約30秒間にも渡ってニックが細かくリズムを刻んでくる様子もユニークです。

この音源最大の魅力は、確かに「Money」と「Us And Them」でサックス奏者が加わった72年唯一の公演を収録した点にあると思います。しかしあまりにもこの2曲にスポットが当たるあまり、私達はその第1部だけでなく、第2部も含めたショウ全体のイメージをしっかり把握していなかったのではないでしょうか。勿論この大きな要因は、これまでの既発盤では「太陽讃歌」と「Blues」が酷いノイズで掻き消されていた事により、全体を俯瞰したくとも雑音が邪魔して出来なかったという音源の歴史にも原因があると思います。しかし本作の登場によって全てがノイズレスで聴き通せる様になった今、”サックスを入れた第1部だけでなく、第2部含めたショウ全体の変化を考えてみる”という視点はもっと留意されても良いのではないでしょうか。特に第2部の「太陽讃歌」についてはその記述部分で示した通り、他日の72年の演奏とは一味違うアプローチを中盤に含めている点は無視出来ないと思いますし、この変化はテコ入れ=サックスを含めたという変化とどこか”対”を成しているようにも感じられます。つまるところ、サックスが入っているという限定された視点でこの日のショウを語るのはもはや過去の事であり、それ以外の要素も含んだトータルな視点でこのショウ全体を見直す必要性が、ノイズレスで全てを聴ける様になった本作の登場で不可欠になったとも言えるでしょう。

ジェネ若の本作の登場により、ストレス無く全容に接する事が出来る様になったこの日のショウは、間違いなく私達に新しい驚きをもたらしてくれるでしょう。この日限りでサックス入りの興味深いフォーメーションをアッサリと棄ててしまい、その後暫くはまた元のフォーメーションで演奏を続けていたというのもその驚きのひとつだと思いますし、そこには”まだまだ知らないフロイドを発見出来る”という喜びも伴っています。今週末は是非、本来の輝きを取り戻したこの72年の特別な演奏と接する事で、改めてフロイドを”発見”して下さい。初めてこの日の演奏に接してみようという方は勿論、既発盤でノイズに悩まされてきたファンにも自信を持ってお届け出来る、大好評Sigmaレーベルの最新作です!
