Paul McCartney’s 70’s almost overlaps his 30s. In the thirties who got talent and motivation burning hotly led the band called wings, flew fruitfully in the seventies. And it was supposed to continue even after the 1980s. But in the first year of the 1980’s, there were two major incidents for Paul. First of all in January 1980 I was arrested on cannabis possession in Japan that I visited for the concert. Paul seemed seriously afraid at this time that he might be shot from the audience seating standing on the stage whether it was his turn next. As a result, I do not do any tours in the 1980s, so I will spend silent time in terms of live activity. Meanwhile, although I did not come out on tour, I will do a live appearance with a single shot as it is. This work is a series of chronologically recorded miniature live performances that are not recorded in many Collector’s Items, spotlighting such single Paul’s live appearance. This 4th film, which includes a single live performance from 2001 to 2006, a TV appearance and a radio appearance.

【ITV】
Inspired by the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, numerous musicians released a song that encourages the United States. Paul witnessed that moment in the airport of New York, but from that there was born a song called “FREEDOM”. It is also known for being suddenly recorded at the end of the album “DRIVING RAIN”. It was a situation that there was not credit in the jacket because it was too sudden additional recording. Paul frequently sang “FREEDOM” on TV, radio and stage this time. It was felt as if the intention to make it a pole version “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”. 【NOVEL PRIZE】

ポールマッカートニーの70年代はほぼ彼の30代に重なる。才能と意欲が熱く燃えたぎる30代をウイングスというバンドを率いて実り多き70年代を疾走した。そしてそれは80年代以降も続くものと思われていた。しかし80年代の初年度にポールにとって大きな事件が2つ生じた。まず1980年1月、コンサートのために訪れた日本において大麻所持で逮捕されてしまう。ポールは拘留され、いつ終わるかもしれぬ取り調べが続く中、痺れを切らしたバンド・メンバーが帰国してしまう。特に忠実な“フライデー”であったデニー・レインまでも帰国したことで、ウイングスは瓦解してしまう。ポールはバンドを失い、それによりツアーに出る事が不可能となった。そして同年末、ジョンレノンが狂気を帯びた人物に殺害されてしまう。岡田有希子が自殺した時に後追いする若者が続出し、国会でも議題に挙がったように、いつの時代も、どのようなケースにおいても、感化され模倣しようとする人がいるものである。ポールはこの時、次は自分の番ではないか、ステージに立つと客席から撃たれるのではないかと本気で恐れていたようである。結果として、80年代はツアーは一切行なわず、ことライヴ活動という点においては沈黙の時を過ごす事になる。一方で、ツアーにこそ出なかったものの、単発でのライヴ出演はそれなりに数をこなしている。本作は、そんなポールの単発ライヴ出演にスポットを当て、多くのコレクターズ・アイテムには収録されないような、細かいライヴ演奏を年代順に収録したシリーズである。第４弾となる本作は2001年から2006年までの単発ライヴ、テレビ出演、ラジオ出演などを収録している。

【ITV】
2001年のアメリカ同時多発テロに触発され数多くのミュージシャンが米国を激励する曲を発表した。ポールはその瞬間をニューヨークの空港で目撃したということだが、そこから「FREEDOM」という曲が生まれた。アルバム『DRIVING RAIN』の最後に急遽収録されたことでも知られる。あまりに急な追加収録であったためジャケットにクレジットがないという事態となっている。この時期ポールはテレビやラジオ、ステージで頻繁に「FREEDOM」を歌っていた。それはあたかもポール版「GIVE PEACE A CHANCE」にしようという意図すら感じられたものである。しかしアメリカの正＝世界の正義ではないという点、独善的な愛国心の発露であると世界が気付き、今では歌う事がなくなってしまった。これはその時代にテレビ出演で初めて披露された「FREEDOM」である。

【NOVEL PRIZE】
どのような経緯で出演したのかは不明だが、ノーベル賞100周年記念でコンサートが行なわれ、その他大勢の出演者に交じってポールが出演した。冒頭で死去したばかりのジョージに捧げる旨を述べている。ポールが演奏したのは3曲。当時新婚ホヤホヤだったヘザーに捧げる「Your Loving Flame」、そして「Freedom」、最後に「Let It Be」である。この時にドラムスを担当しているのは1993年にツアーを共にしたブレアである。「Let It Be」は誰もが知る名曲とあり、当日の出演者で持ち回りでボーカルを採っている。オーケストラがバックで演奏される壮大なアレンジで、一度曲が終わった後にリフレインが奏でられる、後のツアーでは見られない珍しいアレンジが聴き所である。

【BBC】
こちらはラジオ出演での演奏で、バンドはおらずポールがアコギだけで一人で歌うバージョンである。いかに「FREEDOM」を広めようとしていたかが伺える。途中からパーカッションが入り、アップテンポのアレンジでポールが活き活きと歌っているのが印象的である。エンディングがまるでコミックソングのように終わっているのが面白い。

【WETTEN DASS】
冒頭に司会者のトーマス、ヘザー、そして観客に手拍子を促している。このパターンは後々踏襲されるMCである。ドイツのテレビ番組WETTEN DASSは通常マイミングによる演奏が多い番組であるが、ここでもポールはアコギのみでひとりで歌っているバージョンである。ポールの掛け声にてフリ～～～イダンという箇所を司会者とコーラスしている。

【JAPANESE TV】
日本で放送されたインタビューと共に演奏された「Celebration」と、続けてピアノによるインプルヴィセーションである。「My Love」のメロディに似たフレーズなどが挿入される。

【SUPER BOWL】
アメリカの4大スポーツのひとつアメフトのスーパーボウルは全米の注目を浴びる大きなイベントで、マイケルジャクソンやプリンスなど毎年有名アーティストが出演して会場を盛り上げるのが恒例となっている。この年はポールが出演し「FREEDOM」を歌った。会場にはスタジオ・バージョンが流され、それに合わせてポールも歌っている。ただしマイミングではなくポールのマイクもオンになっているため、スタジオ・バージョンとライブ・バージョンのダブルトラックとなっている。演奏後に中継席に呼ばれたポールは、司会者がふざけて歌う「A Hard Day’s Night」に合わせてポールも追従して歌っている。ONE ON ONE ツアーのオープニングで初めてステージで演奏された曲であるが、戯れとはいえ、これがソロになって初めて歌った同曲であった。

【HONORING HARRISON】
ジョージの追悼イベントといえばクラプトンやリンゴなどが揃いロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで行なわれた「CONCERT FOR GEORGE」が有名であるが、それ以前にイギリスでささやかな追悼コンサートが行なわれているのはあまり知られていない。ポールは特別出演ということだったのか、ひとりでステージに現れ、「Yesterday」をアカペラで歌ったのである。歌詞が去っていった人を偲ぶ内容なので、まさに追悼に相応しいものである。歌詞の「She」を「He」に変えてジョージに当てはめて歌ったのである。それまで幾度となく歌った「Yesterday」であるが、ポールのアカペラというのは珍しく、このテイクが唯一のものであろう。間奏もボボンと口で表現して、客席から笑いが起きている。

【ACADEMY AWARDS】
アカデミー賞の授賞式で、この時候補に挙がっていた「バニラスカイ」のために、同映画のタイトル曲をポールが演奏したもの。2002年のツアーでは通常セットリストに加えらえたが、この時がライブ初披露となる。この一週間後に9年ぶりのツアーに出る、まさにその直前のライブ演奏である。この曲も今となってはステージで演奏することは二度とないであろう。

【TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO】
ジェイレノはアメリカの有名な司会者で、日本でいえばタモリのような存在である。そのジェイレノが司会を務める番組にてポールは「Let It Be」を披露している。テンポを落とし、かなり、本当にかなり崩した歌いまわしで、歌っているのが面白い。間奏はギターではなく管楽器によって奏でられ、女性ボーカルとユニゾンで歌っている。とにかく崩しまくりの歌唱で、かつ真面目に歌っているこのような「Let It Be」も珍しい。

【QUEEN’S JUBIREE】
エリザベス女王戴冠50周年を祝う式典でのライブである。一発目にジョークを交え「Her Majesty」が演奏された。女王陛下は可愛くて素敵な女性だから、いつの日か俺のモノにしてやるぜ、という内容を本人の前で披露できるのはナイトの勲章を持つポールだからこそ許されたのであろう。（マイケル・ジャクソンはダイアナ妃臨席のコンサートで「Dirty Diana」を歌ったことがある。ダイアナ妃は大喜びだったと伝えられる）。きっと女王陛下もユーモアを解したに違いない。アコギの流れで「Blackbird」を歌った後、ステージはバンドに移行する。クラプトンがギターで、ポールはピアノで「While My Guitar Gently Weeps」を演奏。この曲をポールが演奏したことはなく、この時が初演になる。もっともメイン・ボーカルはクラプトンで、ポールはコーラスをつけているに過ぎない。この時はポールはまさにツアーの最中で、通常コンサートを締めくくる「SGT. Pepper’s Reprise ? The End」のメドレーをここで披露している。続いて演奏されるのはビートルズの「愛こそはすべて」である。この曲は2011年ツアーで「The Word」とメドレーで後半のリフレイン部分が演奏されたことはあるが、フルで1曲を演奏したのはこの時が最初であり、現在のところ最後である。当然イントロはフランス国家でなく英国国家に変えられている。ボーカルは当日の出演者の持ち回りである。当日の放送では次の「Hey Jude」までであるが、本作では未放送の流出サウンドボードで、当日の最後に演奏された「I Saw Her Standing There」まで完全収録している。

【BRIDGE SCHOOL BENEFIT】
毎年行われているニール・ヤング夫妻が主催するチャリティ・コンサートへの出演である。ポールはニールと共に『AFTER THE GOLD RUSH』収録の「ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK YOUR HEART」をデュエットで演奏している。この出演に前にポールとヘザー・ミルズ主催のランドマイン・ベネフィットにニールが出演しているため、このイベントへはその返礼出演ということになるのだろう。2日間行なわれたその両日にポールは出演し、同曲をニールと共に歌っている。特に二日目はニール・ヤングのステージのみならず、トニー・ベネットのステージにもポールが登場し、トニーの代表曲「The Very Thought Of You」を一緒にデュエットで歌っている。

【SUPER BOWL HALF TIME SHOW】
2001年に引き続き出演したスーパーボウルである。前回が「FREEDOM」1曲だけだったのに対し、2005年のこの時は4曲を披露している。コンサートに先立ち司会者席で戯れに「She Loves You」を歌っている。いまだこの曲はステージで演奏したことがなく、お遊びとはいえ、これが唯一のソロになってからの歌唱である。そして本番ステージは「Drive My Car」で開幕する。ベースが強調されたポールらしいミックスで、非常にタイトな演奏である。「Get Back」に続き、「Live And Let Die」では派手なライティングと効果音でお祭りを盛大に盛り上げている。普段ステージで演奏している曲だけに演奏に隙がない。

【COLIN & EDITH BBC RADIO 1】
ラジオ番組における演奏。司会者らと共に一緒に楽しくワイワイ騒ぎながらの短縮バージョンながら、演奏自体は非常にしっかりしたものである。このような知られていない細かい出演まで網羅しているところに本シリーズの特徴がある。

【LIVE 8】
1985年の歴史的イベントLIVE AIDから20年後の2005年、再び同趣旨のイベントが行なわれた。G8（主要国首脳会議）に合わせて行なわれたため、LIVE8と題された。オープニングは1990年以来となるリプライズではない方の「SGT. PEPPER’S」である。U2のボノとのデュエットでの演奏となっている。「Drive My Car」では、今は亡きジョージ・マイケルとの息の合ったデュエットを聴かせてくれる。珍しいのは「Hey Jude」が一旦終わった後、会場の余韻を再び再燃させるかの如く、スティックによるカウントから「Hey Jude」のリフレイン部分を再び演奏するところであろうか。

【RAZOR CUTS VIRGIN RADIO】
ラジオ出演時における演奏である。アコギだけの演奏で曲目は「I Say You Never Tell Me」となっているが、メロディは明らかに『Chaos And Creations』に収録の「How Kind Of You」である。この時点で既にアルバムはリリースされているため、創作過程における草稿というわけではなく、メロディを拝借した替え歌というべきものであろう。

【ELLEN DEGEBERSES SHOW】
アルバム『CHAOS AND CREATIONS』のリリースに伴うプロモーション出演。ポールは4曲を披露している。ビートルズ時代からウイングス時代を経て現在に至るこの日のために編集されたイントロダクションから、新曲「Fine Line」「English Tea」の2曲を披露。ツアー中とあって非常に充実した演奏である。新曲の後に「Get Back」「Drive My Car」を演奏している。

【GRAMMY AWARDS】
ヘザーミルズとの離婚協議のため2006年はツアーはもちろんステージに立つことがなく、このグラミー賞での演奏が2006年唯一のライヴとなる。この時点でまだ新曲と言って良いのであろうか「Fine Line」の他、「Helter Skelter」を演奏している。最後の「Yesterday」は他のアーティストによるアップテンポにアレンジされたもので、ポールは途中でゲスト・ボーカルとして参加している。

【LIVE ARCHIVES VOL.4】
通常のタイトルには収録されない、されていない、単発ライヴを細かく年代順に網羅したライヴ・アーカイヴ・シリーズのVol.4は2001年から2006年までの演奏を収録している。トラック・リストを見て頂ければわかる通り、こんな細かいもの、今まで知られていなかった初登場のもの、よくもここまで集めたものだと思われるのではないか。通常のツアーでは演奏することのない曲から、唯一のライヴ・テイクまで、ポールのミュージシャンとしての活動においては欠かすことの出来ない貴重なものばかりである。本シリーズでは、それら全てを年代順に網羅していくことをコンセプトとしている。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
