Paul Simon who expressed his retirement from tour life. Currently, his last tour “HOMEWARD BOUND – THE FAREWELL TOUR” is being held. A superb live album that reports on the scene appears.

This is the schedule which has been published to date. Initially, the Hyde Park performance on July 15 was the last but later “North America # 2” was added. Especially, it is the extreme thing “Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War”. Although it is a masterpiece of “HEARTS AND BONES”, this song was played on the stage since then. It is the resurrection for the first time in 34 years.

そんなショウを収めた本作は、キラめくように美しいオーディエンス・サウンド。手がけたのは現代の名手として話題の「edtyre」氏。彼はポール・マッカートニーやロジャー・ウォーターズ、THE MOODY BLUESの録音が世界的に絶賛を集めた人物で、名機「Schoeps MK41v」による美音に定評のある人物。本作もサウンドボードと間違えるタイプではないのですが、真っ直ぐに届く演奏音はディテールまで克明で、芯もしっかりと逞しい。公式ライヴアルバムよりも少しエコー感を強めたような感覚で、その中を貫く演奏は極めてクリアなのです。
そして何より、ポールの歌声。ほんのりとまとった会場音響がしっとりと彩り、深い滋味を醸している。アップテンポでは生声を力強く支え、スローでは深い情感を会場の隅々にまで届ける。繰り返しになりますが、その音響がクリスタル・クリアに透き通っているからこそ、機微が隠されることなく一層倍加するのです。さらに、暖かい臨場感も素晴らしい。現場となった“ウェルズ・ファーゴ・センター”は、約２万人収容のスタジアムで、その空間が沸き立つリアルな感覚。力強い演奏や歌声を遮るようなことはないのですが、長いキャリアの名曲に贈られる惜しみない喝采がわき起こり、２万人がぶ厚いコーラス隊と化す大合唱のスペクタクルが素晴らしい。この旨みは、芯が丸裸のサウンドボードでは決して味わえない。「どれだけラインに近いか」ではなく、「オーディエンスだからこその美」を追及したような気品のサウンドなのです。
そんなクオリティで描かれる“HOMEWARD BOUND – THE FAREWELL TOUR”こそが素晴らしい。最後を飾るだけあってソロもSIMON & GARFUNKELも交えた集大成的なステージ。デビューから半世紀を超えるキャリアが走馬燈のようにフラッシュバックしていくのです。おおよそは近年のツアーで演奏されてきた曲が多いのですが、その中で耳を惹くのは、５年ぶりの「Kodachrome」や19年ぶりとなる「Can’t Run, But」。特に極めつけなのが「Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War」。『HEARTS AND BONES』の名曲ですが、この曲がステージで演奏されたのは当時以来。実に34年ぶりとなる復活なのです。
