76年のUSツアーを終えたWingsは翌77年にシングル曲『マル・オブ・キンタイア(キンタイア岬)』を発売します。このバグパイプを使ったスコテッシュテイスト溢れるナンバーは英国の人々の心を掴み空前の大ヒットとなりました。そしてなんとポール自らが持つビートルズの『シー・ラヴズ・ユー』の売り上げ全英記録を更新するにまで至ったのです。このレコーディングは2月のアビイ・ロード・スタジオから始まり5月にはヴァージン諸島での録音作業へと続いていきます。しかしこの過程でジミーとジョーがグループを脱退してしまいます。
そしてリンダの懐妊があったこともあり、実質ポールとデニーの二人だけで制作されたのが今回ご紹介する『ロンドン・タウン』です。『マル・オブ・キンタイア』の流れを汲むとしか言えないこのアルバムは温かなサウンドに溢れた名盤として大ヒットしました。『ウイズ・ア・リトル・ラック』が全米チャートのナンバーワンに輝きました。ただ残念なことに『サタデー・ナイト・フィーバー』のおかげでアルバムとしてはナンバーワンにはなれなかったことが、このアルバムの存在を地味にしているのかも知れません。
しかしあえて断言します、このアルバムは大名盤です！と。半数近い曲でポールとデニーが共作したこのアルバムは名曲のオンパレードです。オープニングの『ロンドン・タウン』、デニーが歌うトラッド・フォーク風な『チルドレン・チルドレン」からA面ラストの『アイブ・ハッド・イナフ』まで、A面は勿論B面は言うに及ばず。ラストの『モース・ムース・アンド・ザ・グレイ・グース』では元祖変態サウンドが大炸裂して、このアルバムは終わりを告げます。全体のサウンドはトラッド風味溢れるところにあると思います。これは明らかにデニーの影響が大きいと推測します。そしてデニー色が強いその理由は今回のボーナストラックとしてあえて（大胆にも)収録したジンジャー・ベイカーズ・エア・フォースの1stアルバムに収録されたデニーがボーカルをとる『マンズ・オブ・コンスタント・ソロウ』です。 デイランのカバーでも知られる米国のケンタッキー民謡を大胆にトラッド風にアレンジしたことからもデニーの音楽的な指向は明らかなのではないでしょうか。それにしても『ウイズ・ア・リトル・ラック』のようなAORチックな曲でもポールのリトル・リチャード直系スタイルシャウトになるところはやはりすごい！

この『ロンドン・タウン』をレアな両面マトリックス1のオリジナルUK盤から復刻したものが今回のプレゼントアイテムです。また『マンズ・オブ・コンスタント・ソロウ』はこれまた入手困難なモノミックスのUSシングル盤の音源を使用しました。
本編はさすがUK盤と思わせるまろやかな音ざわり、ひと際素晴らしいのはやはりポールのベースがブンブン響き渡っているところでしょう。またボーナストラックはジンジャー・ベイカーの例のドラムと終盤のコーラスが大爆音で迫ってきます。
次回のポールの来日公演では、ぜひこのアルバム『ロンドン・タウン』から1曲でもいいからお願い！と思ってしまいます。
