ウイングス1976年のオーバー・アメリカ・ツアーは文字通り全米を制覇しただけでなく、ブートレグ史にとってターニングポイントとなった重要アイテムを生み出したツアーでもあります。何しろ人気の頂点を極めたツアーですので、TMOQ系列のレーベルを中心としていくつものオーディエンス録音タイトルが生み出されたもの。その中でも伝説的な存在となったのが「WINGS FROM THE WINGS」という豪華なボックスセット。
これはツアー最終日である6月23日のLAフォーラム公演を3枚のLPに完全収録したアイテムでLPというメディアの性質上、ライブの完全収録盤というのが少なかった時代にウイングスの最新ステージを捉えたアイテムとして華々しく登場しました。もちろん三枚組というボリュームからボックスに納められたパッケージ。おまけにアメリカの独立記念200周年にかこつけて三枚のLPを星条旗の三色（赤青白）のカラー・ビニールでプレスしてみせたという凝りよう。これで売れない訳がない。
誰もが聞きたがったウイングスの最新アメリカツアーを収録した豪華パッケージのセットという目論見は見事に的中、ウルトラ・セールスを記録。ところがあまりにも売れてしまったことで当局に目を付けられてしまい。それまでにないブートレグの大規模な取り締まりがアメリカで行われるきっかけにもなってしまったのです。実際に当時活動していたブートレガーをして「ウイングスのボックスが出るまでは平和な市場だったのに」と振り返るほど、悪い意味で大きな転機を生み出すきっかけとなってしまった。
またオフィシャルのライブアルバム「WINGS OVER AMERICA」がライブ終了から半年後という、当時としてはかなりのスピードリリースなタイミングが実現したのもこのボックスセットのせいでした。

一方でこのセットに収められたステレオ・オーディエンス録音はかなりの高音質だったのにもかかわらず、CD時代に入ってマイク・ミラード録音による同日のさらなる高音質音源が登場したことから完全に見過ごされた存在と化しました。唯一ボックスセットのLP落としで収録した（パッケージもボックス仕様だった）CDも存在しましたが、カラー・ビニール故に頻発するスクラッチノイズをねじ伏せる為に相当なイコライズが施されて元の音源の魅力が損なわれたのです。
この後でミラード音源とそれのアイテムが普及してしまったのですが、ビートルズのギフト・アイテム「20×4」や「THE STEREO WALK」でもおなじみREMASTER WORKSHOPが「WINGS FROM THE WINGS」のデジタル化を敢行。それが同レーベルの最新作の一つなのですが、ライブ前半における「The Long And Winding Road」などいくつかの曲でファイル制作時のミスによるイントロ欠けが生じてしまったこと、さらにアコースティック・コーナーではスクラッチノイズが散見されるなど、REMASTER WORKSHOPらしかぬ粗が見られた（「I’ve Just Seen A Face」序盤の欠損は元のLPからの状態）ことから、あまり広く出回っていないタイトルであると同時に、それらのトラブルがなければプレスCDでのアイテムでのリリースも可能では？と思えたことが惜しまれます。
それでもなお伝説のLPボックスセットの音源を気軽にCDでプレイバックできるアイテムとしての魅力は十分。CD時代になって発掘された各極上オーディエンス録音の域には及ばないものの、それでも十分に楽しめる音質であるということも言っておきましょう。ってか、LPボックスセットを引っ張り出して再生するのって、面倒くさくないですか？（爆）
