Freshly formed wings are doing the first tour as a band in 1972. In the short-term UK tour, basically it was a day / night schedule of one city, day and night performance was organized by the city. And, the final performance place which has been performed extensively around the region widely and finally is London. It was like that it was a long rehearsal until then, attacking from the surroundings and getting in to the final performance place London. By this time the tour’s evaluation has already increased, and on the last day London was organized by 3 consecutive performances. This work has recorded concerts of May 26 and May 27 of the final day, respectively, from three consecutive performances of the final tour of this tour.

The first song is the unreleased song “Soily”. Many fans would have heard for the first time at “WINGS OVER AMERICA”, but it is said to be a different concert with such an unreleased piece brought to the opening. The performance is wonderful, with a sense of speed, as a result of weakening the blues color which had been a hobby of Henry, there is no loose atmosphere like 1972. Then “Big Barn Bed” “When The Night” is played from “RED ROSE SPEEDWAY”. It will not be played live again in the future, it is precious music only at this time. Of course Paul is taking main vocals, but Linda and Denny’s chorus are forced to demonstrate without mercy and this will lead to complicated chorus work such as “heart’s love song” later I guess. At this point Paul’s head should have seen the direction of the band “rock with chorus included”. Currently, it is Paul ‘s intentional thing that Linda’ s chorus comes to mind when our fans recall the songs of Wings, and it is clear on live that Linda ‘s chorus is the wings. Although Linda was initially critically seen, “Seaside Woman” also received a favorable cheer. “Turkey In The Straw” is Danny Lane’s a cappella. “Little Woman Love” is a medley and is played in a form that sandwiches “C Moon”. In “WINGS OVER AMERICA” it became a popular song from this live version as the title changed to “whispering of heart”. It is still an important repertory of Paul’s stage as a grand song of piano. However, at this point in 1973, the tempo is relaxed with the performance of “Melancholy of love”, and the impression changes dramatically because the performance is performed more than anything else, not piano. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is the early version of “Maybe I’m Amazed”. The following “My Love” is played not by a piano but by an electric piano. Like the studio version, there is no orchestra in it, but this is the closest performance to the original, it is a precious arrangement that I can not listen now. Interlude guitar solo showcasing Henry’s first-class performances is almost a complete copy of the studio version, and it’s exactly like this solo. It is a wonderful solo whose breasts are high as long as you can hear it, no matter how many times you listen.

“Go Now” and “Say You Do not Mind” are two songs sung by Denny Lane. In terms of Stones, I told Keith ‘s turn. And the concert is entering the calm. “The Mess” is a live version in The Hague only released as single B side, yet the studio version has not been announced yet. It’s as nostalgic as the new “hidden sari” like playing the vocals of the Beatles era in the performance of Wings.

This work is the final tour place of this 1973 Tour 1st LEG, London has recorded the last two consecutive performances from Hammersmith Odeon continuous performances. 結成したばかりのウイングスは、バンドとして初のツアーを1972年に行なっている。しかしツアーといっても、予めスケジュールが組まれてのものではなく、皆でバスに乗り込みイギリス各地の大学をまわり、その場で交渉してコンサートを行なうサプライズ的なものであった。商業的なものではなく、むしろ新生のバンドを聴衆に慣れさせる性格が強いものである。この時点でアルバムは『WINGS WILD LIFE』しかリリースされておらず、レパートリーの少なさから同じ曲を二度演奏するなど、本格的なショウというよりもむしろ和気藹々とした旅芸人の演奏旅行のような趣であった。

そして改めて1972年の夏、ウイングスは本格的なツアーに出る事になる。これが正式な初のツアーとなる。このツアーは欧州各国をまわるというもので、7月と8月に2クールに分けて行なわれた。ここで着目すべきは本国であるイギリスが含まれていないことだろう。ビートルズ解散前後からポールに対して辛辣なイギリスのメディアを嫌い、敢えて批評の緩い欧州を選んだのである。初めてのツアーで酷評を受ければバンドは自信を失くし萎縮してしまうだろうとの考えもあっただろう。何故ならバンドの力量はプロであるポール自身が一番良く知っていたはず。現在残されている1972年欧州ツアーの音源を聴く限り、バンドの方向性が定まっていないのはもちろん、オリジナル曲も弱く、「My Love」以外にヒット曲もなく、何よりリンダを含むバンドの演奏技量がおそらくポールが求めたであろう水準に達していない。イギリスでコンサートを行なう前に欧州で力試しといったところだろう。

元々ウイングスの目的はビートルズ時代に放棄したライヴ活動を行なうためのものであり、ポールは短期間でこのバンドを成長させねばならない。ツアーと平行してレコーディングも精力的に行なわれた。かつての仲間が積極的にアルバムをリリース、特にジョージが3枚組などの大作をリリースしている状況を意識したのかどうか知らないが、この時期、ポールはウイングスの次のアルバムとして2枚組を考えていた。実際のライブではそれら収録予定の曲が数多くライヴでも演奏されている。歴史的に未発表の曲もあるが、MCでは「次のアルバムの曲」と紹介しているように、この時期のポールは新たな挑戦に情熱を傾けていたのである。しかし前作『WINGS WILD LIFE』がセールス的に不発に終わり順風な出航とはならなかったため、ポールは妥協を強いられることになる。まずバンド名に自分の名前を冠する事。これにより「WINGS」が「PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS」と変えられた。そして当初2枚組の予定だったものが、シングル・アルバムに凝縮を余儀なくされた。レコード会社もリスクをとれなかったのだ。その結果生まれたのが『RED ROSE SPEEDWAY』である。このアルバムは現在でもポールの最高傑作のひとつとして挙げられており、「My Love」が全米ナンバー１ヒットを記録、「Yesterday」以来の名曲と称えられた他、アビーロードを彷彿とさせる後半のメドレーなど、セールス的にも前作を大きく上回った。そしてウイングス、正式にはポール・マッカートニー＆ウイングスは、このアルバムをリリース直後から再びツアーに出る事となるのである。

ウイングスがデビューしてから、しばらくは英国を敢えて忌避していたが、バンドをもう一段上のレベルに引き上げるにはエンターテイメントの市場規模の大きなイギリスでの成功は不可避である。ちょうどビートルズがリバプール、ロンドン、アメリカと順を追って大きくステップ・アップしていったように、イギリスでの成功、それも局地的なものではなくロンドンで成功する必要があった。この時点でアルバムは2枚のみだが、オリジナル曲は数多く揃っている。ヒット曲もある。何よりバンドにとってイギリスでの成功は通らざるを得ない道程である。そんな中、1973年5月から行なわれたのがアルバム『RED ROSE SPEEDWAY』に伴う初のイギリス国内ツアーであった。あくまで国内ツアーということで規模は小さく15公演のみ。セットリストも1時間強と短いものであった。それでもアルバムの他、映画のテーマ曲「死ぬのは奴らだ」を始め多彩な楽曲群、その他「おらが村の英雄」ポールをビートルズ時代以来久しぶりにステージで見る事が出来るというので、各地で大盛況だったようである。ツアーは基本的に1都市1公演で、例外的にマンチェスターでは二日間行われている。そしてツアーの最終日が、満を持して乗り込んだロンドンはハマースミス・オデオンであった。こでツアー日程を確認してみよう。

短期UKツアーにおいて、基本的には1都市1日の日程で、都市によって昼夜公演が組まれた。そして広く地方を回り、いよいよ満を持して行なわれた最終公演地がロンドンである。それまでが長いリハーサルであるかのような、周囲から攻めて最終公演地ロンドンに乗り込んだのである。この頃には既にツアーの評価は高まっており、最終日ロンドンは何と3連続公演が組まれたのである。 そして三日間とも早々にSOLD OUTの告知が出ている事からも、ロンドンのファンがいかにポールを待ち望んでいたかが伺える。本作はこのツアー最終の地ロンドン3連続公演から、5月26日と、最終日5月27日のコンサートをそれぞれ収録している。

一曲目は未発表曲「Soily」である。多くのファンは『WINGS OVER AMERICA』で初めて耳にしただろうが、このような未発表曲をオープニングに持ってくるあたり異色のコンサートと言える。演奏はスピード感あふるる素晴らしいもので、ヘンリーの趣味であったろうブルース色を弱めた結果、1972年のような緩い雰囲気は皆無である。続いて『RED ROSE SPEEDWAY』から「Big Barn Bed」「When The Night」が演奏される。今後二度とライヴで演奏される事はないであろう、この時のみの貴重な楽曲である。ポールがメイン・ヴォーカルを採っているのは勿論なのだが、リンダとデニーによるコーラスが容赦なく発揮を余儀なくされており、これが後に「心のラヴ・ソング」などの複雑なコーラス・ワークに繋がっていくのだろう。この時点でポールの頭の中には「コーラスを盛り込んだロック」というバンドの方向性が見えていたはずである。現在、我々ファンがウイングスの楽曲を想起する際にリンダのコーラスが頭に浮かぶのはポールの意図的なものであり、リンダのコーラスこそがウイングスたらしめているのがライヴにおいてもよくわかる。当初批判的に見られていたリンダだが、「Seaside Woman」でも好意的な歓声を受けている。「Turkey In The Straw」はデニー・レインのアカペラである。きっちり計算されショウアップされた現在では考えられない事であるが、これはポールがベースからキーボードに移動する際の繋ぎであろう。

「Little Woman Love」はメドレーで「C Moon」を挟む形で演奏されている。これは後の1975年ツアーでも踏襲されたもので、「C Moon」は2002年に初めて単独で演奏されたが、「Little Woman Love」はいまだ単独で演奏されたことはない。「Live And Let Die」は現在でもコンサートのハイライトのひとつであり、大音量と共に火柱が立つ演出を想い出す人も多いだろう。しかしこの時点では、まだそのような演出はなく、エンディングも現在とは異なっている。「Maybe I’m Amazed」は当初は日本語のタイトルを「恋することのもどかしさ」と記されていた。それが『WINGS OVER AMERICA』では「ハートのささやき」と邦題が変わり、このライブ・バージョンから人気の曲となった。ピアノの壮大な楽曲として現在もポールのステージの重要なレパートリーとなっている。しかし1973年のこの時点ではまだ「恋することのもどかしさ」の演奏で、テンポはゆったりとしており、何よりピアノではなくエレピで演奏されているため印象ががらりと変わる。いわば「Maybe I’m Amazed」の初期バージョンと言っても過言ではない。続く「My Love」もピアノではなくエレピで演奏されている。スタジオ・ヴァージョンがそうであったように、オーケストラこそ入っていないが、これこそオリジナルに近い演奏であり、今では聴けない貴重なアレンジである。ヘンリー一世一代の名演を披露した間奏のギターソロはスタジオ・ヴァージョンをほぼ完コピで、まさにこれ以外ないというソロ。何度聴いてもタメ息が出るくらい胸が高鳴る素晴らしいソロである。

「Go Now」と「Say You Don’t Mind」の2曲はデニー・レインが歌う曲である。ストーンズでいえばキースの出番と言ったところ。そしてコンサートは佳境に入っていく。「The Mess」はハーグでのライヴ・ヴァージョンがシングルB面としてリリースされたのみで、いまだスタジオ・ヴァージョンは未発表。激しいリフと重いドラムが聴衆を盛り上げる。さらに畳みかけるように放送禁止となった「Hi Hi Hi」を続けて演奏している。最近のポールもステージのアンコールで演奏しているが、これはその45年前の同じ本人による演奏であり歌唱である。コンサートを締めくくるのは「Long Tall Sally」である。最初のキーをとるためギター・ソロが奏でられ、おもむろに甲高いヴォーカルが炸裂する。この当時はまだ求められているのがビートルズの曲である認識はあったのだろう。そういう聴衆のニーズに応えるために、ビートルズ時代に演奏していたカバー曲というのがポールが出来る最大の譲歩だったのだろう。それにしてもポールのヴォーカルは凄まじいの一言に尽きる。失礼ながら若いという事は、それだけで素晴らしいと思わせる。まるでウイングスの演奏にビートルズ時代のヴォーカルを重ねたような、懐かしくも新しい「のっぽのサリー」である。

本作はこの1973年ツアー1st LEGの最終公演地、ロンドンはハマースミス・オデオン連続公演から最終連続2公演を収録している。5月26日公演は興奮気味の司会者の紹介から収録されており、音質はサウンドボードで収録されたニューキャッスルを別格とすれば、最も高音質で収録されていると言える。バンドがステージに登場して軽くチューニングするあたり時代を感じさせる。興奮冷めやらぬ聴衆を前に、最後の司会者の挨拶まで収録されているのが特徴である。最終5月27日公演も前日に劣らぬ高音質で収録されている。セットリストは同じなものの、連続公演における演奏の違い、特に成功を収めたツアーの最終日ということでポールの演奏にも熱が入ろうというもの。ニューキャッスルと並んで1973年ツアーを代表するタイトルになるであろう。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
