アルバム・タイトルは現代風らしく、ポールがたまたま自分の携帯を見たら「メモリーがもうすぐいっぱいです」と表示されたのを目にした事がきっかけとなっている。携帯の「メモリー」は「想い出」を意味する単語と同じである。そこに何かしらのセンチメンタリズムを感じたのであろう。大人の階段昇る「想い出がいっぱい」をそのままタイトルに流用している。アルバム全体を覆う雰囲気はシンセが多用された機械的なもので、従来のポール・ファンには受け入れられづらいものではなかっただろうか。しかし2002年からのツアーの余波を受けてのリリースであったこと、さらにバンドの力量を維持するためシークレット・ギグを欧米で行なったことなどから、いまだ衰えぬポールの意欲が感じられることもあり、概ね好評であった。特にポールがマンドリンを片手に歌う「ダンス・トゥナイト」は長らくステージでも演奏されており、2015年武道館公演でも久しぶりに演奏された、最も知られた曲であろう。

本作は、この『Memory Almost Full』に関連した音源を収録している。この時期はツアーに出ていないが、アルバム・プロモーションは積極的に行なっており、リンゴと一緒にテレビ出演なども行なっている。当時は食傷気味なくらい「Dance Tonight」を何度も歌っていたものである。そんなアルバム・プロモーションの一環として、ポールが収録曲の演奏の仕方を教えるという企画があった。それが本作のメインとなる「teaser trailer」である。「Dance Tonight」はマンドリンだけで演奏したものが2バージョン収録されている。「Ever Present Past」には多くの時間が費やされている。最初はアコースティックによる演奏。リズムマシーンを用いてヴォーカルにもエフェクトがかけられていたリリース・バージョンに比べ、こちらの方が曲の良さがダイレクトに伝わってくる。まさにアコギによるスタジオ・ライヴといった趣である。続いてポールがコードを誘導しながらアコギで演奏するテイク、ドラムの解説をしながらの演奏、ベースの解説をしながらの演奏、ギターを解説しながらの演奏と、徐々に楽器を加えていって、この曲の完成に至る過程をポール自らの言葉で語っている興味深いものである。

『Memory Almost Full』の中で一番の名曲は間違いなく「Vintage Clothes」である。かつて藤子不二雄は、漫画も描き慣れると技術がついて惰性でもそれなりのものが描けるようになる。しかしそうなっては読者の心まで掴むことは出来ないと語っている。2000年代以降のポールの新作を聴くと、やはり長年の技術の蓄積に依るものが多く、残念ながら私の心に響く曲というものはない。もちろん「それなりのもの」だから普通に良い曲だなと思うが、かつて夢中となったポールの曲とは明らかに心への響き方が異なる。そんな中、近年の作としては非常に素晴らしい、これぞ名曲が「Vintage Clothes」である。まるでシングルを買うように、この1曲のためだけにアルバムを購入してもよいと思ったくらいだ。

「Vintage Clothes」の素晴らしさは筆舌に尽くしがたい。懐古趣味的ながら前向きな歌詞、美しくも軽快なピアノに乗せたイントロ、そしてポールが歌い出すとすぐコーラスが追い被さって来る。始まってすぐにクライマックスを持ってくる曲構成、曲がパアッと明るくなり、マイクを引いて入れる合いの手的な掛け声、まるでウイングスの未発表曲を聴いているかのような懐かしい雰囲気である。途中にウ～ウ～というリンダふうのコーラスまで入れる凝りよう。そして何より、ここからがいいところなのに～！という終わり方。もっと長くこの曲を聴いていたいという感覚は「No Words」と共通するものがある。まさにポールここにありという完璧な名曲である。

これほどの名曲でありながら、今まで一度もステージで演奏されたことはない。しかし、本作に収録されているのは、アコギ一本によるポールの生演奏である。私の知る限り唯一の「Vintage Clothes」の生演奏である。例えアコギだけの演奏にコーラスなしでポールだけの歌唱であっても、この曲の良さは隠し切れない。どのようなアレンジでも、実に素晴らしい別バージョンとして心に響いてくる。途中ポールがコードを間違えて仕切り直す場面はご愛敬だが、そのせいもありリリース・バージョンより1分近く長い演奏となっている。しかもリリース・バージョンが次の「That Was Me」に切れ目なく繋げられていたのに対し、ここではきちんとエンディングが付与されている。さらにエンディング前にはアドリブ・ボーカルも入るなど、『「Vintage Clothes」好き』にはたまらないものとなっている。

「That Was Me」も、ポールがアコギのみで演奏するバージョンである。リリース・バージョンでは上手く隠されているが、このテイクを聴けば、これがエルヴィスを意識した曲であるというのが非常によくわかる。まるで「Heartbreak Hotel」のオマージュである。しかしリリース・バージョンでは、それをアレンジで上手く糊塗してポールの曲に仕上げたのはさすがだなと思わざるを得ない。本作に収録のこのアコギによる演奏を聴かねば、これがエルヴィスへのオマージュであると気付かなかっただろう。

「Feet In The Clouds」はアルバムの中でも目立たない小曲である。ここでもポールはアコギ一本による生演奏である。同じ流れで、エルヴィスの「Blue Moon」、そして「It’s Now Or Never」の元ネタ「O Sole Mio」を歌っている。ここまでタネあかしをして大丈夫かと思うくらいエルヴィスへの敬意を表している、その影響下で作られたアルバムが『Memory Almost Full』であるだけでなく、エルヴィスこそがポールのミュージシャンとしての原点である表明であろう。

ここから以降は実際のライヴ音源が収録されている。最初にこのアルバムに伴うツアーは行なわれなかったと書いたが、アルバム・プロモーションのために数多くのテレビ出演、そして単発を重ねたシークレット・ギグが行なわれている。本作には今までどこにも収録されていなかった、この時期の単発ステージを収録している。

まず最初は、2007年6月7日に出演したテレビ番組LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLANDにおけるスタジオ・ライヴである。『Memory Almost Full』から早速「Only Mama Knows」が一曲目に披露されている。当初からライヴで演奏することを前提として収録されたかのようなノリの良いロック・チューンであり、その効果はここで存分に発揮されている。この曲もポールは好んでその後のツアーで採り上げている。一曲「I’ve Got A Feeling」を挟んで「Dance Tonight」である。ここではバンドでの演奏である。そして最後は「Lady Madonna」で締めくくられる。バンドで2曲、マンドリン、そしてピアノと、アルバムを紹介しつつライヴにおける多様性を見せつける選曲となっている。

続いて2008年2月20日英国の音楽祭BRIT AWARDSでの演奏である。ポールはビートルズとしてもソロとしてもこの賞を受賞しており、この時はポールは5曲も演奏しているから、その功績を考慮してかなり優遇されていると言えるだろう。『Memory Almost Full』からは、バンドによる「Dance Tonight」1曲にとどまっている。これもまた賞の性格を考慮すると致し方あるまい。これ以外は「Live And Let Die」「Hey Jude」「Lady Madonna」「Get Back」と、フル・コンサートのクライマックスだけをピックアップしたような選曲がなされている。

そして新たなツアーに出るまでの空白の期間における最後の単発ステージが2009年2月8日GRAMMY AWARDSにおける演奏である。この時は「I Saw Her Standing There」1曲のみの演奏となっている。

最後は「Meat Free Monday」である。ポールがベジタリアンなのは知られているが、そうでない人でも、せめて月曜日だけは肉を食さないようにしようという、ベジタリアン啓蒙の曲である。曲といっても単純に「Meat Free Monday」を繰り返すだけの他愛ないものだが、それでもポールらしさを感じることが出来る曲である。収録はロンドンにあるMPLの社屋の中で生演奏されたものである。

本作は2007年リリースのアルバム『Memory Almost Full』に関する音源を収録したものである。アルバムとしてまとまったアウトテイクというのは流出していないが、ツアーを行なっていない時期の貴重な生演奏を聴くことが出来る。特にシンセや打ち込みが多用されたアルバムの曲を、このようにシンプルなアコギだけの演奏や、実際のライヴ演奏で聴くと、やはりポールらしい曲の良さが感じられること間違いない。近年のポールのアルバムはどれも音処理が過剰に感じるし、ヴォーカル自体にも強いエフェクトをかける傾向にあるが、本作を聴くと、やはり生歌がええな～という気持ちになる。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
