「ラムのモノ？スーパー・デラックス・エディションに入ってるよ」ごもっともだと思います。しかし、あちらは豪華だが非常に扱い辛いボックスセットの一環としてリリースされたもの、もといモノ。持っていない人、あるいは聞いていない人が多いのではないでしょうか。またリリースに際してマスター・テープからのリマスターを施した上で収録しています。さすがですよね。そんなラムのモノは元々ポールがヒットを生み出すうえでまだまだ影響力の大きいAMラジオ局でのエアプレイを年頭に置いてわざわざ作らせたもの。1971年ともなれば、完全ステレオ時代。そんな風潮の中で作られたプロモ用のモノ・ミックスは当然ながらビンテージな味わいを伴います。
確かにスーパー・デラックス・エディションでシャキッとリマスターされた音質は素晴らしい。しかし、不自然ではないが低域と高域を強調させた仕上がりが71年当時のプロモ盤LPに刻まれたモノラル・サウンドとは感触が違うのも確か。2012年に最新技術で磨き上げられたサウンドは見事な仕上がり。それでもなお、71年当時のLPのモノが持つ魅力は捨てがたい。現在のLPレコード復権はまさにそうした風潮を反映したものでしょう。
だがしかし、ステレオ完全普及期にリリースされたプロモ・オンリーのモノLPともなれば、オリジナルを入手するのはハードルが高い。ただでさえAMラジオ局向けにしかプレスされておらず、現存数は数十枚もないのではとも言われている一枚。2016年にはオークションサイトでなんと11000ドルで落札されたほどの超激レア盤。誰もが手に入れられる訳ではないし、先のスーパー・デラックスが出てもなお価値が下がっていない。この本家モノの前では、同ボックスのリリース後にリマスター盤モノも限定のLPが出されましたが、まるで格が違う。それがオリジナルLPのナチュラルでウォーミーなサウンドというもの。
ただでさえ入手の困難なプロモ盤モノもまたDr.Ebbettsがリリースしてくれていたのです。Dr.Ebbetts以前からRamのモノをCD化したアイテムは存在しましたが、それとは比べ物にならないほどクリーンでナチュラルなCD化はDr.Ebbettsの面目躍如。相当良いコンディションの盤を周囲のマニアから借り受けてトレースしたのだと推測されます。もちろんDr.EbbettsのバージョンをプレスCD化したアイテムも過去に存在していますが、スーパー・デラックスの登場によって見過ごされてしまった感があります。それも当然の流れでしょう。

ところが、今になって改めて聴いてみればDr.Ebbettsバージョンのラム・モノは非常にナチュラル。これぞモノラルかつアナログ・チックな質感を楽しめる仕上がりであることに惚れ直してしまいました。そして完全ステレオ時代のアルバムですので、ミックスの違いもまた見過ごされがちな本モノ・ミックス。ところが実際には、ビートルズのステレオとモノと同じように多くの違いが含まれていたのでした。

Too Many People
フェイドアウトが5秒長いので、ステレオでは消え去っていた演奏の続きが聞き取れる。

3 Legs
そもそもがモノラルらしい演奏の迫力が増しています。それ以上にポールが「A dog is here」と歌う際（1分38秒辺り）に息を吸う音が大きく聞こえますが、これがステレオでは綺麗さっぱり消されてしまった。まるでビートルズの「If I Fell」を彷彿とさせるようなステレオとモノの違いです。

Dear Boy
以前からマニアの間ではステレオとの違いが解りやすい曲として知られています。それはエンディングでポールがベースをガリガリ鳴らす音がステレオより大きく聞こえる。

Monkberry Moon Delight
これはかなりミックスが違う。ステレオと違って随所でアコースティック・ギターの音が聞こえますし、ポールのボーカルにもほんのりエコーが加えられている。そしてエンディングで曲名を繰り返すところが一か所消されており（3分38秒辺り）そこが空白となっているのが新鮮。

Eat At Home
ステレオとモノラルではそれぞれ曲の間で違う呟きが入ります。モノの場合は最初の歌い出しの後でポールが低い声で「イエーイエーイエー」と呟いていて、これがステレオにはない。逆にステレオで聞かれたリンダのバック・コーラスのいくつかがモノでは消されています。

Long Haired Lady / Ram On
これら二曲はステレオだとかすかに曲間が空いていますが、モノでは完全にクロスフェイド状態となっており、こちらの方が作品の仕上がりとしては上かと。

ステレオよりベースが手前に出たミックス。真ん中に寄ることで迫力も増しより引き締まったサウンドに仕上がっています
