その極上記録は３つ。世界の名手“Crazy S.”氏による極上フル・オーディエンス録音、プレFMマスターのステレオ・サウンドボード、さらには近年発掘されたバツグンのフル・スクリーンショット。これらをプレス２CD＋プレスDVDに収めた３枚組なのです。ボリュームもさることながら、その１つひとつがそんじょそこらの記録とはわけが違うハイクオリティなものばかり。１つずつご紹介していきましょう。

【ディスク１・２：Crazy S.氏のフル録音】
まず、登場するのは、世界にその名を轟かせる名匠テーパー“Crazy S.”氏によるフル録音。80年代に異常なハイクオリティ録音を連発した氏ですが、そんな彼にも変遷があり、黄金期は1986年に尽きる。先日もMARILLIONの超絶録音『WELCOME TO THE GARDEN PARTY: MILTON KEYNES 1986（ZODIAC 186）』をご紹介しましたが、本作も負けず劣らずの超絶な１本。野外会場ならではの残響ゼロのクリアさ、遠い観客と間近なバンドという不思議なバランス、ギターのピッキングニュアンスまで克明なダイレクト感……その総てがサウンドボード級という奇跡的な録音なのです。
その素晴らしさ故に、当日の６バンド（SCORPIONS、DEF LEPPARD、MOTORHEAD、BAD NEWS、WARLOCK）丸ごと収録したカップリング盤『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1986（Langley Deluxe 013）』も大人気を博しました。本作に収録のマスターも、Langley Deluxeの６枚組と基本的に同じもの。改めて最新・細心マスタリングも試みたのですが、音質自体はイジりようがないほどに完璧。現代のオーディオ機器に最適化してはいますが、それ以上は変えようがないほどの超美麗録音だったのです。ただし、既発では「Thank God For The Bomb」冒頭に８秒の録音漏れがありましたので、そこを後述のビデオ・マスターで補完。１音たりとも逃さない完全無欠収録を初めて実現しました。

【ディスク２：Pre FMサウンドボード】
ディスク２には、さらに有名FM放送も追加収録しました。これもまた、ただのエアチェック音源ではなく、放送前のプリFMマスターからダイレクトに起こされたもの。それをさらにマスタリングし、高音の抜けを改善。完全なオフィシャル級サウンドを実現しました。従来通り43分の抜粋放送ではあるものの、オフィシャル仕事のミックス／マスタリングを“これ以上はない”マスターから復刻し、さらに磨き上げた史上最高峰バージョンで収録いたしました。
それにしても驚きなのが、メインの“Crazy S.”録音。超有名FM放送の究極版を追加収録したというのに、続けて聴いてもメインがまったく負けていない。80年代の機材と客席で、一体どうやったらこんな極上サウンドで録れるのか……。

【ディスク３：フル・スクリーンショット】
そして今回最大のポイントとなるのが、このディスク３のDVD。最近になって発掘されたオーディエンス・ショットなのですが、全編にわたって現場スクリーンを撮影しており、ほとんどプロショット。三脚でも使っているのか、安定感が尋常ではなく、手ブレの類は一切なし。やや白っぽい画面だけに完全なプロショットとも違いますが、マルチカメラで描かれる現場スクリーンを存分に堪能できるのです。
そのバツグンの映像をさらに完璧にしているのが音声。ディスク１・２の“Crazy S.”マスターをシンクロさせたのです。もともとのビデオ音声もなかなかのサウンドではあったのですが、やはり“Crazy S.”は究極的なまでにグレイト。しかも、サウンドボード級のクリアさは、プロショット級のスクリーンショットに異様にマッチ。まったく別次元の、本作だけの究極仕様になったのです。この時代のオジーというと、オフィシャル映像『THE ULTIMATE OZZY』もありますが、曲を入れ替えたり、PVをぶち込んだりと編集感ばりばり。それに対し、このディスク３は極上の天然素材だけを駆使し、「Carmina Burana」から「Bark At The Moon」へ続くオープニングから「Goodbye To Romance」の終演シーン、さらには聖地のビッグ・フェスを祝う「OZZY」の仕掛け花火に至るまで、総てが本生100％。30年の時空を飛び越える猛烈な現場感覚をそのままに、プロショットばりの見応えを実現した逸品なのです。

そんなクオリティで描かれるのは、まさに“80s METALの権化”たるプリンス・オブ・ダークネスの勇姿。歴代で最も華やかなテクニシャン、ジェイク・Ｅ・リーの技は冴えに冴え、バンマスとしての存在感も堂々たるもの。LAメタル的な新曲はもちろん、BLACK SABBATHの名曲もランディ・ローズの名ソロも、独自解釈でシャープに刻み込む。そのドライなサウンドにはリフの重みやメロディの哀感はあまり感じられませんが、それだけに旋律そのものの“美”がムキ出しになり、名手ランディ・カスティロのグルーヴと相まって“全世界仕様のオジー”があまりにも鮮烈なのです。
30年前に聖地ドニントンで輝いた、ジェイク時代のオジー。その真の姿を３種の極上素材で描ききった３枚組です。オーディエンスだからこそ実現できた本生感覚、その素材が最高級だからこその極上感。“ジェイク＆オジー”・“1986年のヘヴィメタル”を客席感覚で味わう最高の逸品。今週末、あなたのお手元へ。
