以上、４公演が“NIRVANA at Japan”の総てです。当店でもキニーのオリジナル・カセットから復刻した『OSAKA 1992（ZODIAC 181）』、流出サウンドボードのオリジナルDATを使用した『TOKYO 1992（ZODIAC 179）』をお届けしてきたわけですが、残るところはあと１本。それが本作、「1992年２月16日：名古屋クラブクアトロ公演」のオーディエンス・アルバムなのです。
以前より知られてきた録音ではありますが、そのクオリティは見事なオーディエンス・サウンド。さすがに『OSAKA 1992』『TOKYO 1992』には及びませんが、キニー録音の傑作や卓直結サウンドボードといった異常なレベルと比較すれば致し方ないこと。普通の基準で考えれば、十二分にクリアな名録音。現場PAのせいか、終盤の数曲でやや籠もり気味にもなりますが、それさえなければキニー録音にさえ肉薄するほどなのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれる名古屋公演は、大阪・東京とはまったく違ったムードが凄まじい。それは冒頭のサウンドチェック・シーンから圧倒的。現場の“名古屋クラブクアトロ”は、500人そこそこの狭いクラブなのですが、その密室感・密着感がもの凄い。ホール・クラスだった初日の大阪、最終日の東京でも「新たなロック」に対面した衝撃が渦巻いていましたが、それがさらに圧縮。まるで本場アメリカの地下クラブのような灼熱の空気感、混沌とした暗黒の涅槃がパンパンに詰まっている。ましたが、大阪・東京ならいざ知らず、本作からはその言葉がとても信じられません。そんな熱狂が吹き荒れつつも、大音量・極太のバンド・サウンドが総てを蹂躙し尽くし、一切の主役を譲らないから凄い。「Lithium」冒頭で大合唱が巻き起こりつつ、演奏が激化するや悲鳴のような絶叫が沸き、それさえもヘヴィに押しつぶすアンサンブル……。重金属とはまた違う、“匂い立つような重さ”が部屋中に充満するのです。セットリストも大阪・東京とはやや違い、この日だけのレア曲「Dumb」も披露してくれます。

初の日本どころか、初アジアの瞬間でもあった『OSAKA 1992』、極東でも成功した充実感溢れる『TOKYO 1992』。そのどちらとも違う濃厚なライヴアルバムです。単に東名阪の記録をコンプリートするだけでなく、１本１本の個性も豊かな“日本公演三部作”。その完結編となる１本。今週末、あなたのお手元へお届けいたします。
