三日連続で行われたフェスティバル・ホールでの公演の二日目である5日の公演は、今から二十年ほど前に「OSAKA」というタイトルがリリースされ、曲間のカットが激しかったにもかかわらず、それまでLPアイテムでも聴かれなかったニール・ヤング初来日の素晴らしさを伝えてくれたアイテムとして世界中のマニアを驚かせ、しかも彼のタイトルの中においてもコピー盤が作られるほどのベストセラー・アイテムと化しています。
「OSAKA」が素晴らしかったのは演奏だけではありません、何よりもその音質が素晴らしいオーディエンス録音で収録されていたことが評判を呼んだのです。その後この音源を使い回したアイテム、さらには全長版を収録したアイテムが今日までリリースされてきたものですが、それらは何かしらの問題を抱えていました。一番の問題はピッチの狂いが上下であり、あの「OSAKA」ですらピッチが下がった状態だったのです。さらには大なり小なりダビングが重ねられた音源を元にしていたが故のヒスノイズなど、実はこれほどの有名音源ながら実はそういった問題を抱えていたリリースが多かったのは意外な事実でしょう。
今回はこの「OSAKA」音源のファースト・ジェネレーション・マスターを入手しました。それによって初めて正確なピッチでの収録が実現したのです。それに何といっても音質が段違い。これがロージェネレーション音源ならではのナチュラルな音なのか…過去のリリースにあった粗さが一掃された状態に唖然とさせられるはず。もっとも、そういった過去のリリースとは違った微弱なカットがライブ前半を中心としてみられます。しかしそれらは演奏に一切及んでいません。これは推測するに、録音者と一緒にライブを観た人物が、自身のコピー（これが今回のファースト・ジェネレーション・マスター）を作る際、曲間で自分の声が入っている部分を嫌ってその部分をカットしたのだと推測されます。
そうしたカット箇所をジェネレーションが異なる音源で補てんすることは可能ですが、それらが一切演奏部分に及んでないないことから、むしろ補てんすることによって生まれるであろうヒスノイズの上下動という不自然さ、それを均一とするためのイコライズが必要となることから、敢えて今回入手したファースト・ジェネレーション・マスターの状態を尊重する、形で収録しました。終盤「Southern Man」でのもみくちゃ具合も今となっては懐かしい臨場感。そして何よりもウォーミーでナチュラルな質感と正確なピッチが生み出す気品ある音質であの不滅の名盤「OSAKA」音源をお楽しみいただけます！
