Linda Ronstadt in the early 1980s who was about to fly from California’s rock singer to a great standard singer. A phantom studio album created at such turning point is a gift release decision.
This work is Linda’s studio work “KEEPING OUT OF MISCHIEF” which was unpublished. It is a studio album officially created in New York in 1981. At that time she also challenged Broadway’s musicals and opera, and was looking for a place to play a wide range of activities not limited to rock. Its motivation also took on album making, and challenged the famous song cover work of jazz standards with the producer: Jerry · Wechsler. The album was completed and it was decided up to the record number, but Linda who stopped being confident could not be released. I will announce again the locked “GET CLOSER”.
This is the studio work that was unpublished in that way. I think that you can imagine from what I went to just before the release, but it was not a kind of demo or rehearsal, but a complete album. It can also be said that the initial version of “WHAT ‘S NEW”. Seven songs other than the title song and “Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry” have already been recorded in all the nine hits of the huge hits, and further recorded in “LUSH LIFE” “Falling in Love Again “,” HUMMIN ‘TO MYSELF “also included” Never Will I Marry “in early version. “Keeping Out of Mischief Now” sang several times on the stage of the 80’s is also recorded studio.
Of course, even if the songs are the same, the taste is completely different. It was Jerry Wechsler who arranged the arrangement, unlike “WHAT’S NEW” which boldly introduced the orchestra, it is a simple and simple band style. But, it is really authentic. And the singing voice of Linda who followed such a jazz band is also wonderful. At the time, a 35-year-old singing voice was full of fresh passion to challenge the new world, while inflating the skillfulness. She is also attractive in locking herself, but it makes me feel a big possibility that I can not fit in that narrow world already.

Because Linda himself was not satisfied with this work, masterwork “WHAT’S NEW” was born, leading to a leap behind. In that sense it is a studio work that disappeared and disappeared, but it was not a bad thing but it was a matter of direction. A celebrity ensemble by a famous jazz men in the world is exquisite, sometimes moist, sometimes on a simple sound, sometimes a powerful Linda’s singing voice is really wonderful. 本作は、未発表に終わったリンダのスタジオ作品『KEEPING OUT OF MISCHIEF』。1981年のニューヨークで正式に制作されたスタジオ・アルバムです。当時の彼女はブロードウェイのミュージカルやオペラにも挑戦し、ロックに止まらない幅広い活躍の場を求めていました。その意欲はアルバム作りにも及び、プロデューサー：ジェリー・ウェクスラーを迎えてジャズ・スタンダードの名曲カバー作品に挑戦したのです。アルバムは完成し、レコード番号まで決まったのですが、出来に自信が持てなかったリンダは発売を中止。改めてロックな『GET CLOSER』を発表するのです。
そうして未発表となったスタジオ作品こそが本作。発売直前まで行ったことからもご想像いただけると思いますが、デモやリハーサルの類ではなく、完全に完成されたアルバム。その中身は『WHAT’S NEW』の初期バージョンと言うこともできる。かの大ヒット作の全９曲中、タイトル曲と「Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry」以外の７曲がすでにレコーディングされており、さらに『LUSH LIFE』で再録される「Falling in Love Again」、『HUMMIN’ TO MYSELF』で取り上げられる「Never Will I Marry」も初期バージョンで収録。80年代のステージで何度か歌った「Keeping Out of Mischief Now」もスタジオ録音されています。
もちろん、曲は同じでも趣きはまるで違う。アレンジを務めたのはジェリー・ウェクスラーで、オーケストラを大胆に導入した『WHAT’S NEW』とは異なり、グッとシンプルなバンド・スタイル。しかし、それが実に本格的。何しろ、バックを務めるのは50年代から70年代にかけて活躍した著名なジャズメン。エラ・フィッツジェラルドの伴奏でも知られるトミー・フラナガン（ピアノ）やジョージ・ムラーツ（ベース）、ソロやRED NORVO TRIOで50年代に活躍したタル・ファーロウ（ギター）、ポールの「あの娘におせっかい」でロックファンにも知られるトム・スコット（サックス）等々、豪華なミュージシャン達が一堂に会しているのです。
そして、そんなジャズバンドを従えたリンダの歌声がまた素晴らしい。当時35歳の歌声は円熟味を滲ませつつ、新たな世界に挑戦するフレッシュな情熱に溢れている。一本気にロックする彼女も魅力的ですが、すでにその狭い世界では収まりきれない大きな可能性を感じさせるのです。

リンダ自身が本作に満足できなかったからこそ名作『WHAT’S NEW』が生まれ、後の飛躍へと繋がった。その意味では消えるべくして消えたスタジオ作品ではありますが、それは出来が悪かったのではなく、方向性の問題だったのでしょう。世界に名の知れたジャズメンによる匠のアンサンブルは絶品で、シンプルなサウンドの上で時にしっとりと、時に力強いリンダの歌声は実に素晴らしい。『WHAT’S NEW』の試作品ではなく、堂々と姉妹作と呼びたい幻の名盤。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりとお楽しみください。
