とにかくサウンドボード録音というだけでも衝撃的であり、まだオフィシャルの「永遠の詩」のリリースなど考えられない、それ用のライブすら行われていない1970年という時代です。ライブの全貌を解き明かすには程遠い収録内容でも、サウンドボード録音でZEPのライブが聴けるというだけで感激の音源でした。

しかしこの音源を聴いたことがある人はTMOQ盤「MUDSLIDE」が大半ではなかったかと思います。しかもサウンドボード録音という特性から再プレスが繰り返されており、70年バンクーバー音源＝「MUDSLIDE」という図式が完全に出来上がっていたのです。もっとも海外のコアなマニアなどはそれがコピー盤であり、オリジナルリリースでなかったことを知っていたのですが、この事実が本格的に知れ渡ったのは80年代後半、あのロバート・ゴッドウィンによる名著「THE ILLUSTRATED COLLECTORS GUIDE TO LED ZEPPELIN」の登場がきっかけでした。
そこで「MUDSLIDE」の大本である「Pb」というLPの存在を知った時の衝撃も決して小さいものではありません。ZEP定番の一つとなっていた「MUDSLIDE」がコピー盤であったというだけでなく、いかにも初期のアイテムらしい、シンプルに「Pb」という謎めいたタイトルだけ打たれたスタンプ・カバー。ZEPのライブLPの中でも最初期リリースと言われるものです。今や「Pb」はZEPライブLPのメガレア・アイテムの一つに君臨しており、当初から出回ったは多くなかったとのことです。それがTMOQのコピー盤によって広められた…この点は先頃ご好評をいただいたOGの「LIVE」がコピー盤「MY BRAIN HURTS」によって広められたのとまったく同じ状況だったと言えるでしょう。

現在までに至るCDリリースにおいてもさまざまなバンクーバー音源がリリースされてきましたが、そのどれもがオリジナル「Pb」LPの音質をどうしても越えられない…そこでメガレアLPをイコライズして収録したものなど、これまたいくつものアイテムが生み出されてきたものです。そこで今回は改めてメガレア「Pb」オリジナルLPのミント・コンディション盤から細心の注意を払ってCD化。ジャケットの内側には独特なイエロー・レーベルも掲載しています。こうしてオリジナル「Pb」の音を聴いてみると、それはもうまったくの別次元。元々がミキサー卓経由のサウンドボード録音でモノラルではありますが、その鮮度やクリアネスは本当に素晴らしい！「MUDSLIDE」や数多くのCDアイテムとはまったく比較になりません。
それにしても不思議な音源ですよね。カナダのラジオで放送されたものが元だと言われている割に、その放送を録音した別音源などは一切登場していないのです。21世紀に入ってようやく同日のオーディエンス録音が発掘されましたが、サウンドボード録音に関しては未だに「Pb」がオリジナル・ソースでもあり続けているのですから。しかしこの時代に流出サウンドボードがあるとも思えず、曲順や「Whole Lotta Love」の中間部が完全に切り落とされた編集などがまた放送を意識しているように思います。サウンドボード録音がグループから提供されて放送されたと推測するのが妥当でしょう。

そしてミキサー卓経由の録音であることは、何よりもペイジのギターが押され気味なバランスが物語っています。会場では大きく鳴らされていたギターの音の存在感が薄い、この録音状態はミキサー卓経由のサウンドボードによるある症状で、例えばクリムゾンの69年フィルモア音源においても同様の事情がリリース時に説明されていたものです。
しかしこのバランスを補って余りあるのがプラントの見事なスクリーム・ボイス。刺すような激しい歌は70年ならではのものであり、ZEPならではのインプロヴィゼーションよりもプラントの歌パートが目立つ曲がまとめられた内容（これもまた放送を意識しているのでは）がそれを際立てています。そういった凄まじいスクリーム、それを支えるボンゾ迫力のドラミングを見事な鮮度とクリアネスで再現してくれるメガレアLPを最高の状態で収録した限定のプレスCDが今回リリースされます。これがオリジナルのサウンドだ！
