しかし今年に入り、当店が武道館初日を皮切りとして72年来日公演をリリースし続ける状況となり、改めて109こと大阪二日目のリリースを求める声が高まっています。端的に言ってしまうと、武道館初日から始まった、あのジャケット・デザインで109を再発してもらえないか…という声まであったのです。リリースからまだ一年経過してないながらも、それでいてSold Outから半年以上が経過した「THE UNPROCESSED 109」やこの音源を求める声が絶えないのは、一重に72年来日公演の名演と呼ばれる一日だからこそ。それに輪をかけて驚くべきクオリティを誇る録音状態。武道館初日と並び、72年来日公演で双璧を成すウルトラ・レコーディング。
そうなれば「THE UNPROCESSED 109」の再発を検討するべきか…そんな空気が当店スタッフの間に漂い始めた時、同音源の別ルートからのバージョンを入手したのです。もちろん今回もオーディエンス録音のマスターテープを使用していることは当然なのですが、昨年の「THE UNPROCESSED 109」は21世紀初頭、当時普及し始めたCD-Rトレードを始めたテーパーがマスターからCD-Rへとトランスファーしたバージョンが元になっていました。
それに対し、今回は近年改めてマスターからデジタル・トランスファーしたバージョンを元にしているのです。元は同じ音源でも、アナログテープをデジタル化する技術は十年の間で飛躍的に向上を遂げました。その結果、今回も素晴らしい元の音質はそのままでありながら、ウォーミーさやナチュラルさが際立つ状態での収録を実現しています。聞き比べてもらえば解るのですが、そのナチュラルな度合からしてイコライズとはまったく次元の違う、より忠実な音源の解像度を増したが故であることが今回のポイントかと。線が細く、ウォーミーさとは違ったアナログチックな味わいが「THE UNPROCESSED 109」の大きな魅力だったとすれば、それでは表現しきれなかったマスター本来の音質を現代によみがえらせたのが今回のバージョンだと断言いたします！

さらなるアドバンテージとしては、この音源においてもっとも目立つ問題であったオープニング「Rock And Roll」途中までのピッチ変調がより端正な状態で収録されたこと。既に「THE UNPROCESSED 109」でも丹念にアジャストされていた問題ではありますが、今回はいよいよ安定感に驚くばかり。元々このような正確な状態で録音されていたのだと錯覚してしまうことでしょう。それともう一つは「Whole Lotta Love」メドレーにおける「Everybody Needs Somebody To Love」パートにおける急速なピッチの上昇。これは「THE UNPROCESSED 109」において見過ごされてしまっていたトラブルだったのですが、今回はそれも矯正、古くは「TAPES FROM THE DARKSIDE」辺りからマニアの間で親しまれてきた音源がいよいよ完全な状態で限定のプレスCDにてリリースとなるのです。
ところが今回の音源、「The Rain Song」においてピッチが不安定になるという新たな問題をはらんでいました。それは「THE UNPROCESSED 109」の元音源にはないトラブルであり、ここ十年の間にテープが劣化してしまった結果だったように思われます。もっとも、この問題に関してもアジャストを徹底していますので、先に挙げたトラブルと同様、言われなければまったく気づかないほど自然で安定した状態に驚かされることでしょう。

名演の誉れ高き109ではありますが、最近の当店リリースで聴き比べてみると、ライブ前半はむしろ10月4日の大阪初日の方が良い出来であるように感じます。それに4日には演奏されていたアコースティック「Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp」が省かれてしまっている点ではむしろ京都公演と似たような雰囲気も漂っている程。これはよく知られているように、名古屋公演から109までの間にZEPが敢行した弾丸香港旅行の疲れが残っていたのかもしれません。
72年来日公演でよく見られる現象として、ライブ序盤がまったりとレイドバックしていながら、新曲「The Song Remains The Same」になるとバンド全体が一丸となったかのような火の玉パフォーマンスを聴かせ、それ以降のボルテージが上がるという場面がここでも顕著に現れました。しかも「The Song Remains～」をプラントがアルバム・バージョンと同じメロディ・ラインで歌い上げるというのは意外と貴重なものであり、そうした歌いっぷりは「Over The Hills And Far Away」や「The Ocean」においても短命に終わったもの。
いずれにせよ、そこで火が付いたZEPが「Dazed And Confused」を72年来日公演におけるベスト・バージョンに仕立て上げたのは間違いありません。もっともトリッキーな展開が冴える演奏は来る73年ヨーロッパツアーを予見させるに十分。さらに厳かな「Stairway To Heaven」を始める前でプラントが鼻歌を歌って会場を沸かせる（フニクリ・フニクラ調）場面などは前年の929を彷彿とさせる余裕たっぷりな場面でした。そしてライブ終盤はこの時期で極めて珍しい「Moby Dick」に留まらず、スタンダード・ナンバー唯一のZEPバージョン披露となった伝説の「Stand By Me」ではバックコーラスを務めてみせるなど、ボンゾの活躍が際立つのもこの日の大きな魅力。大らかでありながらボルテージは高い…そんな72年来日公演でしか味わえない独特のZEPグルーブ、さらにメドレーがエスカレートを見せた「Whole Lotta Love」など、本ツアー最高の一日のニューバージョン・タイトルとして「109」が再び登場します。そうなれば今回は絶対にお見逃しなく！
