よって、77年ツアー・サウンドのヘビィネスやギラギラとした佇まいが本領を発揮した最後のライブ・ステージがこの6月27日なのです。ZEPとしても、演奏することをこよなく愛した会場、LAフォーラムでのライブの最終日。これまでで最長のスケジュールで行われた、同会場を使った連続公演の最終日でもある。そこでZEPは持てる力をすべて出し切る、最終日に相応しいマラソン・ライブを繰り広げてくれたのです。それは間違いなく、LA公演どころか77年アメリカ・ツアーの中でもスペシャルな一夜であったことに異論はないはず。

そして分析が進んだ近年、マニアの間でよく言われることが、6月27日こそが、77年ZEP到達点の一つではないか？ということ。LPの時代に6月21日がリリースされてからというもの、77年ツアーに関しては6月21日の独り勝ちと呼べる評価が多くを占めていたのですが、その日とデストロイヤーの間ぐらいを行くのが6月27日であり、これこそがいい塩梅ではないかということ。確かに21日のぶっ飛びボンゾは本当に強烈で、多くのマニアをノックアウトさせた名演ではありますが、彼の存在感が大きすぎて、ハードロック・サウンドのアンサンブルとしては決してバランスが取れたものではない。その点27日こそが、いい意味での「アベレージ」と言えるのではないか？ということなのです。
確かに圧巻のマラソン・ライブではありますが、オープニング「The Song Remains The Same」からして21日と比べるとアッパーな雰囲気ではあるものの、その日のようなぶっ飛び感がボンゾにはない。あるいは「No Quarter」を聴くとその違いが顕著で、この日は長い演奏に中弛みする場面がはっきりと見受けられるのです。しかし77年の「No Quarter」はそれまでよりも自由な展開を盛り込んだ分、中弛みしやすくなったのは残された音源が証明しています。そこが21日は飛びっぱなしなアッパーさで切り抜けていたのですが、やはり27日の方が77年としてはレギュラーな展開や雰囲気でしょう。
むしろ6月27日における最大の魅力と言えば、かつてないくらいに自由な雰囲気で演奏されるアコースティック・パート！何しろペイジが「Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp」の途中で堂々とアコギのチューニングを変えて「Dancing Days」を演奏し始めるのです。そこから再び「Bron-Yr～」へ戻って見せる場面こそ、77年ZEPの面目躍如と呼べるもの。LAフォーラムという、ZEPがこよなく愛した会場における、最後の輝きを限定のプレスCDに封じ込めました。6月21日と同様、77年アメリカ・ツアー極めつけの一夜を今度こそお見逃しなく！
