あの「チケットジャケ」のギフト・アイテムが異様なほど人気だった1971年ニューキャッスル。ギフト・アイテムとして登場した直後から「これはプレスで出さなきゃ」との声が押し寄せたニューキャッスルの限定プレスCD化が遂に実現。これまでも当店が71年冬のイギリス・ツアー音源を過剰な小細工なしでリリースし、手軽に聴き込めるアイテムが少なかったこのツアーの状況に一石を投じてまいりました。今までは嵐のような日本公演の後で印象が薄いというイメージの強かった71年イギリスですが、こうして出揃ったアイテムを聴けば、日本のように熱狂的な盛り上がりがなくとも、母国イギリスでゆったりとくつろぎつつも、それでいて71年ならではのアツい演奏を繰り広げていたことがよーくわかることでしょう。

しかもニューキャッスルはそんなイギリス・ツアーの初日。71年冬のイギリスでは、特にオープニングの「Immigrant Song」が日によってプラントの声が苦しい場面が見受けられたのですが、この日はツアー初日ということもあって、声がまったくかすれないエンジン全開状態。これで観客の反応がもっと熱狂的だったとしたら、日本公演かと錯覚したかもしれません。
一方でツアー初日らしいずっこけ場面が散見してしまうのもZEPらしいところで、中でも「Black Dog」では「えっ、そこで？」みたいなところでボンゾが間違えそうになってしまうから面白い。それでいてフットワークはあくまで軽く、しかもプラントのスクリームは冴えわたる。驚愕ものなパワープレイが難なくできてしまうのが71年のZEPの凄いところ。この日も悪いはずがない。
それにこのツアーはウェンブリー・エンパイア・プールでのエレクトリック・マジック・ショーまでは「Rock And Roll」がライブの前半に普通のレパートリー的な扱いでサラリと演奏されているのが面白い。今や洋楽好きで楽器が弾ける人間がバンドを組んだら誰もが一度はやったことがあるであろう曲。ところがニューキャッスルの時点でこの曲は三日前にリリースされたばかりの「新曲」であり、オーディエンスにとってはなじみのない存在でした。
それを示すかのようにプラントが「Rock And Roll」を曲紹介してから始めるのが何とも新鮮。72年の日本公演からこの曲はオープニング・ナンバーとして不動の地位を獲得しますし、77年からはアンコールに昇格。曲紹介という行為とは無縁のスタンダードと化すのです。それだけに、この場面は本当に新鮮。おまけにプラントが絶好調ですので、アルバム・バージョンと同じ旋律を難なく歌いこなしているのが頼もしい。こんなところからも71年イギリスのスペシャルな部分が感じ取られることでしょう。
エンディングが未収録なのが惜しまれる「That’s The Way」ですら、プラントの若くて艶のある声に圧倒される。雰囲気が日本公演とまったく違うことが「テンションの落ちる演奏」と誤解されてきた冬のイギリスですが、まったくもってそんなことはありません。ライブ終盤の「Celebration Day」も凄まじいグルーブ感。とにかくフットワークの軽い演奏が生み出す激しさが圧巻なのです。

そしてニューキャッスルの音源はマニアにはよく知られているように、テーパーが三本のカセットを使ってショーのすべてを録音してみせたものの、時の流れの中で「Whole Lotta Love」を捉えていた二本目のテープを紛失してしまった。よってライブ後半が「中抜け」状態と化してしまった点は惜しまれますが、それでも非常に聴きやすい音質とZEPのアツい演奏がそれを十分に補ってくれる優良音源。
「まるでサウンドボード」と形容されるような音像ではありませんが、それでもツアー中でベスト3に入る素晴らしく聴きやすい音質と、イギリス・ツアーらしい臨場感を捉えてくれた見事なバランス。おまけにピッチの狂いもほとんどありません。今回のプレスCD化に際しては、もっともベストとされるトランスファーからいくつかのノイズを除去した程度であり、それほどまでに優良な音源であることを改めて証明する形となりました。「チケットジャケ」のギフトCD-Rの時からプレスCDでのリリースを待ちわびてくれた皆様、遂にご要望にお応えしての登場です！
