このハワイ・ギグに関しては、その土地柄もあってマニアの間でもベールに包まれた感がありました。この日から最初に登場したのは観客が撮影したカラー8mm映像で、現在ではオフィシャルサイトでも見られるもの。その映像からはプラントがLAフォーラムや後のマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンとその前の記者会見でも着ていた柄物のシャツをここでも纏っており、当時の彼にとってお気に入りのステージ衣装だったことが伺えます。それにこのツアーのZEPはそのプラントの出で立ちが証明するように、後のセックスアピール全開な衣装が想像できないほど全員が「渋い」ファッションと髭面に包まれていたのだから面白いものです。

ところがせっかく発掘された貴重音源ですが、意外にも現在に至るまでリリースには恵まれません。アイテムには恵まれていますが。どういうことかというと、90年代にリリースされたものはまだDATやCD-Rでの音源トレードが普及する直前の時期だったことが仇となり、ダビングが大なり小なり重ねられた音源を元にしていたきらいがあったのです。当然ながらピッチの狂いも生じます。一方近年は先の理由からジェネレーションの低い音源を元にしたリリースが現れていたものの、今度はイコライズによって音質が変化した状態となってしまうジレンマがありました。さすがにブルーベリー・ヒル・クラスの録音状態とまではゆかないまでも、1970年のZEPライブ音源の中では間違いなく上位にランクされる音源としては、どうにも不遇の扱いでしかなかったのです。
そこで今回はファースト・ジェネレーション・コピーを元にし、それでいてノン・イコライズの収録を実現させました。貴重なハワイ・ギグをモノラル音質のオーディエンス録音でキャッチしたこの音源、元来固めな質感がありますので、そこにイコライズを施してしまうと、どうしても聴き疲れするような状態に陥りやすいのです。その辺りの違いが今回のリリースによって体感してもらえるポイントだと言えるでしょう。

それにしても、この音源の音質は非常に素晴らしいものがあります！特にボンゾのドラムの録音状態は生々しいほどで、それが「Dazed And Confused」のイントロ辺りでは続々させられそうなほどにリアル。それ以上に素晴らしいのがプラントのスクリームをこれまたリアルに捉えた状態でしょう。元々が2回のショウであったことに加え、いつもと構成を変えたからでしょうか、ライブの前半2曲では、やや流し気味な風に映ります。しかし、70年にはよく見られた、じらすイントロから始まる「Heartbreaker」辺りからバンドもプラントも大爆発。何しろ、あのブルーベリー・ヒルLAを終え、この後はマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンが控えていたという時期でしかも70年のZEPとなれば、プレイ・クオリティは保障されたようなもの。
そしてコンパクトな構成がもたらしたショウ全体の聴きやすさというのも、このハワイ・ギグでしか味わえない独特な魅力。先のような時期によって、疑いなしに絶頂期ライブの一つを、しかも70年当時としてはハイレベルな音質でキャッチしてくれた音源がようやく理想的な形でリリースされます。こちらも当然ながら限定のプレスCDでのリリース、アフター・ブルーベリー・ヒルのショート・ステージをナチュラルな音質で心ゆくまでお楽しみください！
