「Wolfgang Vault」音源の中でも、最も音が良いのではないか？と思えるほどに完璧なサウンドで登場した、1987年のシカゴ2日目公演音源が、その音の格に相応しくプレスCDでリリース決定です。前日のシカゴ公演初日は、当時ラジオで放送されたため、エアチェック音源、またはラジオ原盤から起こした音源よりブートレッグが数種リリースされていましたが、この3月8日の2日目公演は、これまで一切出回っていませんでした。（シカゴ初日公演は2009年に「Wolfgang Vault」より完全版がリリースされ、以来、その日の決定版扱いされていました。）というわけで1987年「Think Visual」期の音源と言えば、このシカゴ初日というのがその代表格だったわけですが、このたび、またしても「Wolfgang Vault」から、これまで一切音源化されていなかった1987年シカゴ公演2日目のステレオ・サウンドボード音源が突如として登場したのです。驚きは、その音質で、エアチェック音源を一蹴したシカゴ初日の「Wolfgang Vault」音源をも、はるかに上回る高音質サウンドで収録されていることです。これに比べると完璧に思えた初日音源が、mp3ぽい高域がシャカシャカした、幾分、変調気味なサウンドであることが判ります。本当に数ある「Wolfgang Vault」音源の中でも、間違いなく、群を抜くレベルの高音質であり、これならそのままストレートに加工なしに公式リリースが可能なほどです。まさに驚愕の1時間41分完全版ステレオ・サウンドボード音源。この時期のライヴを収録した公式版として「The Road」(フィラデルフィア公演収録）がありますが、こちらは12曲とコンサート完全版とは程遠い収録内容。しかも、初期パイ時代の大ヒット曲が契約の関係上、未収であり、そもそも、この時期のコンサートの全貌をしっかり捉えた音源は、このシカゴ公演のみというわけで歴史的・資料的にも非常に重要。ライブは前作「Word of Mouth」1曲目のDo It Againが軽快にスタート。ショウ前半、5曲目から5トラック連続で新作アルバムからのナンバーを披露します。この時期しかやってないThe Video Shopはレア。他にも「State of Confusion」のCome Dancin’やタイトルトラックなど、まさにこの時期ならではのセットをポジティブ・ムードに溢れた勢いのある演奏で一気に聴き切ることができます。ショウ後半では、ライヴ公演は前日演奏されなかった「Low Budget」からのA Gallon Of GasがSupermanに代わる日替わりナンバーとして演奏されています。20th Century Manのライン録音も貴重。この時期の来日は実現しなかったものの、93年と95年の来日とメンバーが同じであり、そういった意味からも日本のキンクス・ファンにはアピールするものがあるのではないでしょうか。前述の通り、音質が完璧で、しかもキンクスのブートにありがちなピアノやキーボードの音が耳につくことがない、適正な音バランスで収録されているのも本盤の魅力。来年、結成50周年にあたり、再結成も噂されているキンクスの初登場音源をぜひ、お楽しみ下さい。勿論、プレスCDでのリリースです！
