英国HRの強烈なヒストリカル・アルバムの登場です！　本作は、JUDAS PRIESTが1975年レディング・フェスティバルに出演した際のオーディエンス録音。現在、ネットでは“レディングフェス1975”の録音が発掘されて話題沸騰中ですが、本作はそのマスターに加え、録音者本人から提供された世界初公開の別マスターも収録しました。さらに、なんと現場の映像を収めたDVDまでプレスした２枚組！　極初期PRIESTの生記録というだけでなく、70年代半ばの空気をたっぷりと伝えてくれるブリティッシュ・ハードの名作です!!
まずはCDからご紹介しましょう。最初に収録されている「RECORDER 1」は、ライヴの全貌を聴かせてくれる長尺マスター。そのサウンドは、非常に端正なヴィンテージ・サウンド。時代の空気はたっぷりと吸い込んでいますが、爆音や音のつぶれとは一切無縁。70年代オーディエンス録音が初めてという方でも、すんなりと聴けるほどのクリアな録音です。近年ネットに登場した音源ですが、１曲目「Victim Of Changes」の中間部（6:48-7:32）で欠けがあったため、後述の「RECORDER 2」で補完し、コンサート全長版を実現しました。
そして、トラック10-12の３曲が全世界初公開となるオリジナル・マスター「RECORDER 2」。当時、渡英していた日本人テーパーから直接譲り受けたカセットからダイレクトにデジタル化しました。40年前のあの時代に、日本のロックファンが渡英していただけでも驚きですが、そこにいた無名時代のJUDAS PRIESTを録音していようとは……。しかも、そのサウンドは、世界中のマニアを震撼させた「RECORDER 1」さえも軽く凌駕している！　トラック１「Victim Of Changes」の補完部分をお聴きになれば分かりますが、まるで度の合ったメガネをかけたように澄み渡るクリアさには、目が覚めるよう。たった３曲ですが、世界を揺るがすド級の発掘です！
２つのマスターで蘇る極初期PRIESTのライヴは、まさに英国ロックの旨味をギュウ詰めした逸品。デビューアルバム「ROCKA ROLLA」からはタイトル曲１つだけ。まだ録音もしていない「SAD WINGS OF DESTINY」から大量に演奏され、ドラマティシズムが激しく乱高下するステージは圧巻。ロブのスクリームも、まさに絹を裂くような鋭さです。この絶品ヴォイスは、後のライヴで語られる“調子の良し悪し”とは、まったくの別次元。今まで「おぉ、この日のロブは凄い！」と感じた声でさえ、本作に比べたら絶好調でも何でもない。ヴォーカリストとしての頂点は人によって違いますが、ロブの場合は、間違いなく1975年だったと言えるでしょう。
さらに、とんでもなく嬉しいのが未発表曲「Mother Sun」です。一説には「Father Mother Son」とも呼ばれる曲ですが、ドラマティックなツイン・ハーモニーから始まり、「SAD WINGS OF DESTINY」と同じ世界観が９分半にわたって広がる大叙事詩。ロブが変幻自在に曲を操りつつ、泣きに泣くツイン・ソロとメロディをぶつけ合う。ブリッティッシュ・ハードの粋を集めたような「SAD WINGS OF DESTINY」、その濃縮エキスをさらに圧縮固化させたような濃すぎて鮮やかすぎて美しすぎる１曲なのです。存在と曲名こそ耳にはしていましたが、まさかこれほどの曲だったとは……。ブートレッグで見つかる未発表曲は発見の喜びもあって、ちょっと良いメロディがあるだけで「名曲だ！」と嬉しくなってしまうもの。しかし、この「Mother Sun」は、そんなゲタを履かせるまでもなく「超・超名曲！」と叫んでしまう逸品です（なぜ、なぜ発表しなかったんだっ!?）。

さて、いよいよDVD。これは「RECORDER 2」の日本人テーパーが現場で撮影した8㎜フィルムです。わずか３分弱なのですが、貴重なパフォーマンスが美麗に記録されたカラー映像は超お宝。音声には「RECORDER 2」を被せてあります。この映像の歴史感は本当に凄まじい。70年代中期というと、まだビデオカメラも一般的には普及しておらず、「オーディエンス・ショット」がほとんどない時代。そんな時代の本場英国のHRフェスが目の前に繰り広げられる。しかも、撮影者本人の手渡しマスターですから、鮮度はこれ以上ないほど極上なのです。
ヒラヒラ衣装時代のJUDAS PRIESTもさることながら、観客のリアリティが凄い。60年代サイケとも80年代ヘドバンとも違うノリながら、激しく楽しむ70年代中期ならではのオーディエンス。この時代の観客というと放送局のわざとらしいサクラや、コンサートの暗がりでよく見えないようなものばかり。ところが、この映像は、まだ日の高いロックフェスで心底JUDAS PRIESTを楽しむ観客がばっちり映っている。ここまでリアルに“初代メタルキッズ”の姿を捉えた映像は、ちょっと覚えがありません。スティーヴ・ハリスがIRON MAIDENを始動させたのは、本作の半年後となる1975年の冬でした。この映像にハリスの姿は確認できませんが、もしかしたら、この中にいたのかも知れない……。もはや“JUDAS PRIESTだから”という枠を超え、英国ロックシーンの真実を捉えた超・貴重映像。それゆえ、わずか３分弱でもプレスせずにはいられなかったのです！

ヘヴィメタルを胎内に宿しながら、ロックがどこまでドラマティックになれるのか冒険と実験を重ねていた1975年のJUDAS PRIEST。今まで超傑作「SAD WINGS OF DESTINY」を通してでしか感じられなかったブリティッシュHRの極限世界が、一気に彩り鮮やかに広がる１本です。
しかも、それは１バンドの記録以上の歴史感を身にまとい、観客のリアリズムまでたっぷりと吸い込んでいる。PRIESTファンやヘヴィメタル・ファンが聴いて楽しいのはもちろんですが、それ以上に本作の真の魅力を味わえるのは、英国ロックの歴史感を愛する方かも知れません。JUDAS PRIEST、英国HRの双方にとって重く豊かでめくるめくヒストリカル・レコード。輝きを永遠にするプレスCD＆DVDの２枚組仕様で、今週末お届けいたします！
