1972年の「ONE TO ONE」コンサートを収録したこれら二種類のアイテムですが、それこそ1980年代末から90年代初頭にかけては、当たり前のように入手できたものであり、おまけにレンタル・ビデオ屋に陳列されることもざらな状況だったのです。内容は別としても、あの頃はジョンの「ONE TO ONE」コンサートが観たければ近所のレコード屋さんで手に入れられる…そんな時代でした。
まず「LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY」は1986年にリリース。当初ライブ・アルバムのリリースなどが予定されていると噂されながら、1972年当時はテレビ放送だけに終わった「ONE TO ONE」コンサートが遂にリリースされた。おまけに画質も音質も素晴らしい…リリースされた当初は誰もが諸手を挙げて歓迎したものです。特にコンサートの前半部分は先のテレビ映像でまったく使われなかった部分でしたし、コンサートの全貌が明らかとなった衝撃はあまりに大きかった。
ところがマニアは「Come Together」が見慣れたテレビ放映バージョンと違う演奏であったのと同時に、それと比べてやや大人しい演奏であることに気付きはじめました。元々「ONE TO ONE」コンサートは1972年8月30日に一日二回公演で行われたもの。となればテレビ放送と違うテイクを使うことは自然だとしても、明らかに演奏のテンションが違うことに驚かされたのです。

そしてリリースから時間が経過してマニアの間でも分析が進むと「LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY」は初めて見られるようになったライブ前半部分を始めとして、昼の部からのテイクを多く採用しているらしい…ということが判明してきました。これが何を示していたのかと言えば、ジョンにとって久々の本格的ライブ、しかもマディソン・スクエア・スクエア・ガーデン。それまでのトロントやアンアーバーで行われたイベントの一環で出演したライブとは訳が違う。流石のジョンでも昼の部は緊張がなかなか解けなかった。
「LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY」で見られる昼の部からの「Woman Is The Nigger Of The World」などからは、ジョン以上にコチコチな様子で演奏しているエレファンツ・メモリーの姿も捉えられています。何しろ彼らは地方のライブハウスで演奏していたようなバンド。それがアメリカに渡って来たジョンのバックを頼まれた途端にマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンのような大舞台が待っているとなれば、緊張しない方がおかしいというもの。
ジョンが「Mother」で声が出きらず歌いながら首を傾げてしまったり、あるいは「リハーサルへようこそ」といった言葉が出てしまったのも昼の部ならではの光景だったのです。またジョンとしてもエレファンツだけでは荷が重いであろうことを察知したのか、ジム・ケルトナーを呼んだツイン・ドラム編成でMSGのステージに上がった選択も正解だったように思えます。
それだけに映像を観ていても夜の部からの演奏で、ビデオの前半に収録されているヨーコの「Sisters, O Sisters」になると突如として雰囲気が明るくなることが解りますし、すべてが夜の部の演奏からであった「Cold Turkey」以降はいきなり演奏が力強くなる印象を受けるのもそういった編集が原因だったのです。
こうした編集内容が明るみになると「LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY」の評価は当初より下がり始めてしまいます。まだライブ・アルバムの方は廃盤とならず現在まで流通しているものの、ビデオの方はVHSやLDの時代が終焉を迎えると同時に廃盤となってしまったのには、そうした評価が原因となっているように思えてなりません。

一方「ONE TO ONE CONCERT」は1992年になって突如リリースされたもので、これは直接ジョンと関係のないレーベルが権利関係の隙間を縫ってリリースしたもの。「LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY」と違い72年当時のテレビ放送から数曲カットした上で収録しています。当然80年代の最新技術とオリジナル・フィルムを駆使して作られた「LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY」のクリアネスには到底及びませんが、短い時間ながらも全編夜の部のテイクを収録している点でマニアに評価されました。
特に「Come Together」のテンションは段違いで、ジョンとエレファンツのウェイン・テックス・ガブリエルがマイクを分け合って歌った挙句、ジョンが最後に「stop the war!」と叫んで（当時泥沼化していたベトナム戦争を指していた）終えるなど、同曲の「LIVE IN～」バージョンとはまるで別の様相を呈しています。
さらに面白いのは同じ演奏でもカット割りがまったく違うこと。「Cold Turkey」はどちらも夜の部の凄まじい演奏ながら、こちらではジョンがギターを弾くのを止めてまで絶叫する姿が捉えられているのに対し「LIVE IN～」バージョンではその部分で別のアングルに切り替わってしまうという何とも物足りない編集でした。そして最後の「Give Peace A Chance」になると「LIVE IN～」では演奏が始まったところまでの収録だったのに対し、こちらではオープニング・アクトのスティービー・ワンダーとシャ・ナ・ナのメンバー、さらにはフィル・スペクターやアレン・ギンズバーグまでステージに上がった演奏の後半部分を収録しているという違いがまた大きい。
そのオープニング・アクトを収録している点もこちらの魅力ですが、スティービー・ワンダーのステージでは当時彼のバンド、ワンダーラブでドラマーを務めていたオリー・E・ブラウンの姿が何度も映し出される点はストーンズ・マニアにも注目かと思われます。
どちらの映像アイテムの廃盤となって久しいだけでなく、DVDやブルーレイでのリリースも一向に気配がない。もし実現したとしてもこれらとは違う編集が施されることは間違いなし。むしろ1986年のリリースと1972年当時のテレビ放送が観られるという点で、これらアイテムの価値は色褪せることはないでしょう。特にLD版「LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY」のクリアネスの素晴らしさは現在の目で観ても十分なもので、廃盤後に衛星放送で流されたものを録画していた人などにとっても目から鱗が落ちるクオリティであることを保証します。ジョン最大のライブ・イベントの廃盤アイテムをどちらもベストなバージョンからDVD化、懐かしさと共にじっくりと味わってください！
