ペイジ・プラントのシェパーズ・ブッシュ・エンパイアと言えば1998年の超定番サウンドボード録音。シングル「Shining In The Light」のカップリングで小出しされていたところから全長版が流出して一気にポピュラーな存在と化したもの。現在では当日のオーディエンス・ショット映像にアフレコされたものが非常に有名であり、当店からもギフト・アイテムとして出されたことがあります。マニアであれば音源あるいは映像のどちらから接せられたはず。
「今更98年のシェパーズ・ブッシュ？」と思われるマニアの方が多いのではないでしょうか。もちろん、当店としても単なるシェパーズ・ブッシュを限定のプレスCDにてリリースするはずがありません。実のところ、これまでのシェパーズ・ブッシュは流出の段階でカセットのダビングを何度か介して出回ったものでした。1998年ともなればデジタルの録音が当たり前な訳で、そこにアナログのジェネレーションが入れば当然ながら音質が落ちてしまう。それでもシェパーズ・ブッシュが1998年ツアー定番の一つになり得たのは、一重にサウンドボード録音だったからに他なりません。

ところが今回、独自のルートからアナログ・ダビングを一切介さないデジタル・マスター音源を入手。元がサウンドボードですのでクリアネスがずば抜けた録音状態な訳ですが、そこにアナログ劣化のない状態で収録されたピュアなデジタル・サウンドボードは鮮烈の一言。一皮どころか二皮もむけたのではないと思えるほど向上したクリアネスが圧巻。そのあまりのアッパーぶりに、今や95年や96年以上に見過ごされてしまった感のある98年ツアーが新鮮に映ること間違いなし。
中でも名手マイケル・リーのドラミングが左右を駆け巡る録音バランスが音源の魅力であった訳ですが、そのスティックさばきが鮮やかなステレオ感で楽しめる点は、一聴すると過去のバージョンとはミックスが違うのか？と思わず錯覚しそうになってしまうほど。ヘッドホンで再生してみれば、今回の驚異的なアッパーぶりをいとも簡単に実感してもらえるでしょう。98年は他にも優れたサウンドボード録音が存在していますが、ツアー開始後もっとも初期のショーを捉えたSBDとしての価値は今も色褪せず、遂に決定版と呼べるバージョンが2017年になって登場してくれたのです。

ショー自体はまだツアー開始から間もない段階ということもあり、前半の演奏は硬さが見え隠れしています。そんなバンドの雰囲気が伝わってくるのもサウンドボードならでは。元々98年のツアーはアルバム「WALKING INTO CLARKSDALE」のプロモーションという命題がありますので、95年や96年のようなZEPナンバーの目まぐるしい変動が当たり前だったセットリスト展開は起きていません。オープニングのパターンなどはその時の一番ポピュラーなセットリストをそのまま継続したようなもの。
しかし「No Quarter」などはその時のツアーと違ってZEPバージョンの雰囲気へと戻ったアレンジが施されているのが魅力でしょう。ところがこの日はこの曲辺りまでのプラントの歌が今一つ。これもまたサウンドボードだからこそリアルに伝わってくる訳ですが、中でも「No Quarter」は声が出ていない。夏のアメリカなどではもっと歌えていたことを考えるとなおさら。
ところが「WALKING INTO～」からのスローな新曲「When I Was A Child」からプラントがみるみる内に調子を上げていく様子もこれまたリアルに記憶されています。そして先のシングルにも収録されていた「How Many More Times」からはバンドが一丸となった素晴らしい演奏を披露。98年のツアーはこの曲が取り上げられたことが大きな話題となっただけでなく、連日の演奏が素晴らしい出来を示していたことも忘れてはならないでしょう。ペイジのまるで1969年にタイムスリップしたかのようなプレイも素晴らしい。以降はさすがの白熱ぶり。
ライブ終盤は「Crossroads」が演奏されていたことに注目が集まりがちな音源でもありましたが、今聴いてみれば「Most High」と「House Of Love」という二曲の「WALKING INTO～」が出色の出来。ペイジとプラントの二人からしてみれば、ニューアルバムの新曲ということで歌や演奏に力が入るのは当然だと言えます。それにしても迫力のある演奏であり、98年の二人が目指そうとしていたロック・サウンドがよく解るというもの。そしてツアー序盤ならではの活気が伝わってくるのもサウンドボード録音ならでは。ここまで繰り返してきたように、元々が音質の優れた音源ではありますが、今回のアッパーぶりには思わず聞き惚れてしまうのではないでしょうか。これぞ98年シェパーズ・ブッシュの決定版です。

There are a lot of outflow masters involved in the rock and boot leg communities, I have never heard any intense upgrades so far … … Such a super album SHEPHERDS BUSH 1998 MULTITRACK MASTER. To that bonus you will receive a large, classic image that conveys the “sight of the same day”.
Although it is a big staple, this work is not just a past episode. At our shop, it is a video I introduced as “SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE 1998” for a while, but it was completely cut down to “Walking Into Clarksdale”, “No Quarter” and “How Many More Times” that were cut there. It is the longest and best version of this image.
Let ‘s talk about the basics for those who do not know about the past. This work is a name picture that has been loved as a large classic for many years. It is a superb item covered with a stereo sound board (though it is not the outflow masters of this time) with a multi camera specification combining the stage almost the front and the left side (plant side) audience shot. Both of them look directly at the stage over the head overhead of the first floor, and there is no shadow of the front row that is in the way. Whether it is using a tripod or if the sense of stability that does not shake at all is abnormal, zoom closely approaching pro shot beams is intense. The quality is common to both angles, and it is a masterpiece that can be drawn from the right to the left with a superb view.
The show drawn with such quality is also amazingly wonderful. It has something to do with the live position as well. Let’s grasp it in the whole overview of PAGE & PLANT here.

It is a lot of end, but this is the outline of PAGE & PLANT’s activities. It is roughly divided into “1994 – 6 years” and “1998”, and “Europe # 2” of this work is the beginning of the restart in 1998. This “Europe # 2” is a mini tour of “Eastern Europe 6 Show → Turkey 2 Show → British 1 Show → France 1 Performance”. It is a warm-up style of the large tour afterwards, and it is not fatigued while regaining the can. The plant’s voice also roars beautifully like the heyday, and the best show that you can enjoy to unusual “Crossroads”. It can be experienced with two extreme sights & sound boards.
This “European # 2” British concert was only once in the performance of the Shepard Bush · Empire performance, but then appeared on TV in a row. In this work, two programs are also recorded bonus. One is three songs by the traditional name program “TOP OF THE POPS”, the day after the performance of the main part Shepard Bush · Empire. Another two “TFI FRIDAY” songs are the appearances of the next day. Both of them are familiar images with already-to-be-launched, but this is a multicamera pro shot without questions. With the highest quality you can hope now, especially at “TOP OF THE POPS”, aggressive “Crossroads” can also be tasted with professional shots. It is one piece that made a mockery performance of ‘Home Europe’ of “Europe # 2”.

In 1994 of encounter, I faced “illusion of LED ZEPPELIN” 1995 – 1996. Based on that step, I restarted “March 1998”. It is one piece that summarized the performance of 3 days realized in home country to the moment with superb quality. ロック界、ブートレッグ界に関係者流出マスターは数あれど、ここまで強烈なアップグレードは聴いた事がない……そんな超絶アルバム『SHEPHERDS BUSH 1998 MULTITRACK MASTER』。そのボーナスには、同じ日の“光景”を伝える大定番映像をお贈りします。
大定番とは言っても、本作もまた単なる既発コピーではありません。当店ではかねてより『SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE 1998』としてご紹介してきた映像なのですが、そこではカットされていた「Walking Into Clarksdale」「No Quarter」「How Many More Times」まで完全収録。この映像の最長・最良バージョンなのです。
既発をご存じない方のために、基本のお話もしましょう。本作は、長年大定番として愛されてきた名映像。ステージほぼ正面と左寄り（プラント寄り）のオーディエンス・ショットを組み合わせたマルチカメラ仕様で、そこにステレオ・サウンドボード（ただし、今回の関係者流出マスターではありません）を被せた極上品です。どちらも１階席の頭上越しにステージを直視しており、邪魔な前列の影はまったくなし。三脚でも使っているのか、まったく揺れない安定感も異常なら、プロショットばりに迫りまくるズームも強烈。そのクオリティが２アングル共に共通しており、右から左から超極上の光景で描ききる大傑作なのです。
そんなクオリティで描かれるショウがまた、とんでもなく素晴らしい。それはライヴのポジションにも関係がある。ここでPAGE & PLANTの全体概要の中で把握してみましょう。

だいぶ端折っていますが、これがPAGE & PLANTの活動概要。おおよそ“1994年-6年”と“1998年”に大別され、本作の「欧州#2」は1998年再始動の冒頭にあたる。この「欧州#2」は「東欧６公演→トルコ２公演→英国１公演→フランス１公演」のミニツアー。その後の大規模ツアーのウォームアップ的であり、カンを取り戻しつつも疲れもない。プラントの声も全盛期さながらに美しく轟き、珍しい「Crossroads」まで堪能できる絶好調なショウ。それを２つの極上光景＆サウンドボードで体験できるわけです。
この「欧州#2」の英国コンサートは本編シェパードブッシュ・エンパイア公演の１回きりでしたが、その後立て続けにテレビ出演。本作では、その２番組もボーナス収録しています。１つは伝統の名番組“TOP OF THE POPS”での３曲で、本編シェパードブッシュ・エンパイア公演の翌日。もう１つの“TFI FRIDAY”２曲は、さらに翌日の出演です。どちらも既発でお馴染みの映像ですが、こちらは問答無用のマルチカメラ・プロショット。現在望みうる最高のクオリティで収録しており、特に“TOP OF THE POPS”では、アグレッシヴな「Crossroads」もプロショットで味わえる。「欧州#2」の母国パフォーマンスを一網打尽にした１枚なのです。

邂逅の1994年、“LED ZEPPELINの幻影”に向き合った1995年-1996年。その歩みを踏まえ、再始動を期した“1998年３月”。その刹那に母国で実現した３日間のパフォーマンスを極上クオリティで総括した１枚です。本編プレス２CDは驚異的な頂点作ではありますが、本作は“その光景”と“その続き”が北上クオリティで描かれている。どうぞ、併せてたっぷりとお楽しみください。
