ペイジ・プラントが1994年にアルバム「NO QUARTER」をリリースし、1995年から96年にかけて行われたワールド・ツアーを「ZEPの再現」的な幅広い選曲のステージによって大きな成功を収めました。そこから一年の制作期間を経て完全新作のスタジオ・アルバム「WALKING INTO CLARKSDALE」を作り上げたことは世界中のファンを驚かせたものです。確かに「NO QUARTER」の中にもいくつか新曲が含まれていましたが、そこからは単なるセルフ・カバー集で終わらせないための、ある意味では現役アピール的な目的から作られた新曲群といった趣がありました。やはり「NO QUARTER」の売りが往年のZEPナンバーのセルフ・カバーとなったのは当然のことかと。
それだけに「WALKING INTO～」というアルバムの登場には本当に驚かされました。何故ならペイジとプラントは単なる企画ものユニットではなく、音楽を創造するユニットであることを高らかに宣言したからです。現役ミュージシャン・コンビとしての証たるニューアルバムを完成させた二人は、それのリリースを待たずしてヨーロッパ・ツアーを敢行。多分にウォームアップ的な意味合いも含まれたツアーでしたが、アメリカをツアーする前にヨーロッパでウォームアップを行うのはZEP時代からペイジお気に入りのパターンでもあります。

この時期の定番音源シェパーズ・ブッシュ・エンパイアでのギグに関しては一年前にベスト・バージョンたる「SHEPHERDS BUSH 1998 MULTITRACK MASTER」をリリースしました。ところが今回、さらなるヨーロッパ・ツアー開始直後の初登場ステレオ・サウンドボード録音を発掘。1996年以来のツアーが始まったということから、この時期は多くのオーディエンス録音アイテムが矢継ぎ早にリリースされ、今回の2月25日のプラハ公演も当時は「MOST HIGH IN PRAGUE」あるいは「PRESENCE NOW」ボックスといったオーディエンス録音によって聞かれた日。翌日のポーランド公演は後にEVの「L´Evolution de Led Zeppelin Continue II」にてサウンドボード録音がリリースされましたが、プラハ公演に関してはSBD初登場。
もちろんクオリティは極上のステレオ。シェパーズ・ブッシュはショー前半で演奏の硬さが見え隠れしていましたが、初登場SBDのクリアネスが明かしてくれるプラハ公演からは、むしろツアー開始直後ならではの懸命な演奏ぶりが伝わってきます。「Bring It On Home」や「Heartbreaker」などではペイジのプレイがシェパーズ・ブッシュの時よりもなめらかであり、正に懸命な演奏ぶりが感じられるもの。
プラントはと言うとシェパーズ・ブッシュの時と似たような調子で、ショーの前半は歌唱がいまいち。中でも「Heartbreaker」までの三曲では声が出ておらず、それどころか抑揚のない歌い方にまで映ってしまう。それはまるでZEP70年フェニックス公演の再来か？というほど。幸いにも98年PPツアーにおけるセット前半の目玉である「No Quarter」辺りから徐々に調子を上げてくれる。ここでのZEPのライブ・バージョンよりも「HOUSES OF THE HOLY」のアルバム・バージョンを意識したアレンジは今なお新鮮。

おかげでショーが進むにつれてグングン演奏内容が良くなって行くのですが、実際に「Babe I’m Gonna Leave You」以降はツアー開始直後にしてこれほどまでにアツい演奏を聞かせてくれたのかと、サウンドボード録音だからこその衝撃を聞く者に与えてくれるはず。「NO QUARTER」以来の付き合いであるチャーリー・ジョーンズとマイケル・リーのリズム隊の頼もしさは掛け値なしに盤石の域。特にリーの素晴らしいドラミングはシェパーズ・ブッシュ同様SBDならではのクリアネスで圧倒されるばかり。ボンゾ・テイストや彼の模倣に走るのではなく、むしろナインティーズ・ロック・テイスト全開のドラミングがPPに違和感なくフィットしたのだからお見事。
そして98年ツアー最大の目玉であり、各メンバーの持ち味がいかんなく発揮された「How Many More Times」になるとツアー開始直後だとは思えないテンションの高さ。ペイジが往年を偲ばせる弓弾きを披露するだけでなく、このツアーではおなじみだった「In The Light」がインクルードされる展開がインパクト十分。ここではプラントがすっかり調子を取り戻している点も聞き逃せません。

完全にオフィシャル・レベルの素晴らしいステレオ・サウンドボード録音ではありますが、リリースを前提としていた訳ではない（ツアー開始直後なのだから当然でしょう）ので数か所に録音の欠損が生じています。そこには最初に挙げた「MOST HIGH IN PRAGUE」のオーディエンス録音をリマスターして補填に流用。中でも「Gallows Pole」におけるテープ・チェンジと思しきカット箇所に関してはその音源が実に自然につなげられています。パッと聞いただけでは編集を見過ごしてしまうかもしれません。今となっては全くと言っていいほど顧みられることのないPP1998年ツアーですが、今回の発掘によってツアー最初期SBDの存在が刷新され、おまけに音質は最高！それに定番シェパーズ・ブッシュ以上に聞き応えも十分ですので、じっくり聞き込みたくなる音源であると断言いたしましょう。
