『WHO ELSE!』を引っさげ、10年ぶりの来日を果たした1999年のジェフ・ベック。日本中に衝撃を振りましたジャパンツアーでしたが、その中でも最高傑作となる超・極上ライヴアルバムがプレスCDで登場です。
その最高傑作アルバムに収められているのは「1999年５月29日ZEPP OSAKA公演」。このツアーからは東京国際フォーラムのテレビ放送が有名でもありますが、本作はあの大定番以上の超絶アルバムなのです。まずは、ツアー日程から概要を確認してみましょう。

以上、全９公演。国際フォーラムのテレビ放送は８公演目でしたが、本作はちょうど真ん中の５公演目を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムです。そんな本作がなぜ、最高傑作なのか。もちろん無論、その理由の一端は超絶なるサウンド・クオリティにあるわけですが、それ以上なのが演奏の中身です。有名なテレビ放送こそが代表作として記憶されがちですが、実は演奏自体は頂点ではなかった。当時、10年ぶりと言う事もあって全公演を制覇するマニアもおり、「プロショットも素晴らしいけど、もっと良い日はあったよ」が語り草になってきたのです。そう、お察しの通り。本作が録音されたZEPP OSAKA公演こそが名演中の名演を謳われるトップ公演だったのです。
もう少し詳しく突っ込んでみましょう。実のところ、本作だけが頂点というわけでもありませんでした。当時は、専門誌でも全公演レビューが掲載されましたが、その中でベスト公演の候補となったのは２つ。１つがツアー２日目の「５月25日：神奈川県民ホール」であり、もう１つがZEPP OSAKA公演でした。当店では、神奈川県民ホール公演の極上録音『BLAST FROM THE EAST（TRANSACTION 001/002）』をお届けしまして来ましたが、あの名盤は言わば“東の最高傑作”。本作は、それに対する“西の最高傑作”なのです。
そんなZEPP OSAKA公演ですが、このライヴの録音は今までに３本知られており、その中でトップだったのが本作。90年代に大阪で随一と知られていた名手中の手による作品なのです。当店では、その名手コレクションをオリジナルDATからCD化しており、今までもデヴィッド・ボウイ『A REALITY IN OSAKA: THE LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN（Wardour-169）』やプリンス『ONE NITE ALONE IN OSAKA（ZION-080）』、KANSAS『OSAKA 2001（Virtuoso 298/299 ）』、RAINBOW『OSAKA 1995 1ST NIGHT（BLACK BOX 006）』、リッチー・サンボラ『UNDISCOVERED SOUL IN OSAKA（ZODIAC 199）』等々の大傑作をお届けして参りました。本作は、そのシリーズ最新弾というだけでなく、名手コレクションでもひときわ輝く超・極上サウンドなのです。実際、当時の専門誌でも「間違いなく一番音が良い」「現場会場なみに低音がよく響く」「最高の演奏が高音質で聴けるのはありがたい」と絶賛が連なった名録音ではありましたが、本作はそんな頂点録音をオリジナルDATから最新・細心マスタリングで再CD化。名録音の頂上をグイッと引き上げる究極盤なのです。
実際、本作のサウンドは言葉が見つからないほどに素晴らしい。「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶに相応しい極太＆ド直球クオリティなのですが、簡単にサウンドボードをイメージされてしまっては、この名録音に失礼にあたる。艶やかな“鳴り”、ありとあらゆるジェフの美技に宿る呼吸感までもが鮮やかなディテール。そのトーンを目の当たりにした観客のタメ息までもが美しい……。もちろん、ジェフだけでなく、ランディ・ホープ・テイラー＆スティーヴ・アレキサンダーのリズム隊もしなやかなら、技巧派ジェニファー・バトゥンとのツインも見目麗しい。もはや「オーディエンスか、サウンドボードか」等という録音法の違いなど問題外であり、演奏内容を度外視しても「テレビ放送を超えている」と言うしかない美世界が広がるのです。
そのサウンドで描かれる名演中の名演がまた、なんとも素晴らしい。言葉にしてしまっては汚れてしまうほどに素晴らしすぎる。もちろん、語ろうと思えば、左手だけのフレーズを聴かせながら、完璧なエンディングで感動を呼ぶ「Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers」、絶妙なタッピングとタメの利いた演奏が眩しい「Angel (Footsteps)」、「Layla」のフレーズが顔を覗かせる「Big Block」等々、枚挙に暇がありません。しかし、そうしたシーンをいくら書き連ねようと、この素晴らしさは到底伝わりきるものではない。この躍動感、このキレ、この閃き。すべてが輝く名演は、やはり本作を実際に聴いていただくしかない……。

本作が撮影されたのは「1999年６月２日：東京国際フォーラム」公演。本編の解説でも触れましたが、ジャパンツアー全９公演の８公演目にあたるコンサートです。この映像は当時テレビ放送されたもので、ビデオ／DVD／CDを問わず、無数の既発タイトルを生み出してきた大定番中の大定番です。本作は、そんな中でも頂点を究める超極上クオリティの逸品。既発のほとんどはアナログのビデオ録画を元にしていますが、本作は当時はまだ普及していなかったデジタル録画によるもの。放送から４年後に登場した際には、無数の既発を一気に葬り去った超美麗マスターなのです。しかも、本作はそのデジタル・マスターに唯一あった欠点「Psycho Sam」の瞬間的な音切れも補正された究極バージョン。プレスDVD『WHAT MAMA SAID IN TOKYO』ともなりましたが、瞬く間に完売。クオリティだけで“伝説”の座にまで登り詰めた映像なのです。
そんな究極クオリティは、文字通り完全無欠のオフィシャル級。デジタルの超ビビッド画質はもちろんのこと、精緻に仕上げられたミックスも完全無欠。「公式リリースできる」と言うより、「公式リリースすべき」パーフェクトな映像作品なのです。
本編プレス２CDも超絶なるライヴアルバムでしたが、それでは味わえない最大のポイントは“光景”。本作はカメラワークも極めて素晴らしい。恐らく、ジェフ・ベックを愛する局スタッフが担当したと思われ、ステージの見どころを逐一押さえつつ、手元の超ズームもたっぷり。ライヴアルバムだけでは「どう弾いているんだろう？」と頭を捻ってしまう美技の数々が漏らさず間近で目撃できるのです。撮影スタッフが気合い十分なら、ジェフ本人も気合い十分。この時のツアーではＴシャツ姿でステージに立っていたジェフですが、この日ばかりは撮影を意識したのか黒いシャツでドレスアップ。アクションも弾きっぷりもキレており、いかに気合いを入れているかが画面からもありありと伝わってくるのです。

残念ながら放送枠の関係か「Led Boots」「Drum Solo」「Where Were You」が未収録ですが、それ以外に欠点が一切ない。まさにどこからどう見て、聴いても極上プロショットです。……と、褒めちぎっておいて何ですが、本作は完璧なオフィシャル級ではありますが、“頂上”ではありませんでした。パーフェクトな公式級サウンドボードでありながら、本編プレス２CD『ZEPP OSAKA 1999』と聴き比べると、やや平坦にさえ感じてしまう。ジェフも気合いたっぷりに弾きまくっているにも関わらず、本編プレス２CDの切れ味、躍動感には及ばない。完璧にしか見えないプロショットをもってしても遙かに凌駕してしまう『ZEPP OSAKA 1999』、何という奇跡なのか。本作が素晴らしければ素晴らしいほど、“頂上録音の高み”を思い知ってしまうのです。
褒めているのかいないのか分からなくなってしまいましたが、本作が1999年の史上最高峰映像なのは間違いない。本作自体が公式作品レベルの超傑作であるばかりか、本編プレス２CDのイマジネーションを数十・数百倍に高めてくれる逸品。どうぞ、併せて存分にお楽しみください。
