この“NOT IN THIS LIFETIME… TOUR”、日程が進むにつれて強力なサウンドが連発するようになってきました。世界中から注目を集める再編GUNS N’ ROSESですから当然な気もしますが、それにしてもちょっと異常。最近でも極上ライヴアルバム『CHICAGO 2016 2ND NIGHT（ZODIAC 188）』『PHILADELPHIA 2016（ZODIAC 189）』をご紹介したばかりですが、早くも３本目のプレス級録音が登場。その異常ぶりは、日程で確認してみるとよりハッキリ分かります。

……と、このように３本が３本とも７月公演。さらに注目度の高かった４月の始動直後にプレス級録音はゼロだったにも関わらず、『CHICAGO 2016 2ND NIGHT』から本作まで、わずか８公演で３本目の極上録音。とんでもない密度で連発しているのが実感していただけるのではないでしょうか。
そんな３本目たる本作のクオリティは、まさに異常。前回の『PHILADELPHIA 2016』も凄まじい録音でしたが、今回も負けず劣らず。いわゆる「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ばれるタイプの録音で、エッジも鮮やかなクリアさとダイレクト感たっぷりの極太サウンド。現場となった“ジレット・スタジアム”は、約７万人を収容できる巨大な野外スタジアムなのですが、ポジションが良かったのか距離感はさほどなく、残響ゼロの“野外の旨み”だけがたっぷりと味わえる。その上で驚異的なのが低音。いかな現代のPA、機材でも低音はウィークポイントになりがちなのですが、本作の重低音は素晴らしく豊か。野外だというのに風に流されることもなく、ヴァイヴが五臓を震わせ、六腑を轟かす。
こう書くと、低音ばかりのモコモコ・サウンドかと思われてしまうかも知れませんが、もちろん違います。それだけの重低音を持ってしても埋もれない中高音のエッジ、微塵も崩れないバランスこそが素晴らしい。スラッシュの“あの”鳴りも艶やかに、アクセル・ローズの歌声も実に鮮やか。ピアノのタッチ１つひとつまで鮮明なのです。本来であれば、日程が近いところでプレスCDを連発するのはリスキーなのですが、これだけのサウンドを聴かされてはプレスしないわけにはいかない。いやはや、これだけの短期間にこれだけのクオリティ。この瞬間もツアー中の大物バンドは数あれど、ここまで異常な録音連発は、BLACK SABBATHの“THE END”くらいしか思いつきません。
そんなクオリティで描かれる最新ライヴは、『PHILADELPHIA 2016』ともまたひと味違う。もちろん、わずか３公演後の近接ライヴだけに大筋のパフォーマンス／セットは酷似していますが、日替わりのように変化するポイントが２つあります。１つは、セット中盤「You Could Be Mine」の次に演奏されるカバー曲。『CHICAGO 2016 2ND NIGHT』ではIGGY AND THE STOOGESの「Raw Power」、『PHILADELPHIA 2016』ではTHE DAMNEDの「New Rose」でしたが、本作ではMISFITSの「Attitude」が演奏されているのです。
もう１つは、その３曲後。『PHILADELPHIA 2016』での「Sorry」から「Catcher In The Rye」にチェンジしているのです。どちらも『CHINESE DEMOCRACY』収録曲なわけですが、この日の「Catcher In The Rye」は、スラッシュ＆ダフ・マッケイガンが復帰して始めての演奏が聴けるのです。ちなみに、現在までスラッシュ＆ダフが演奏した『CHINESE DEMOCRACY』レパートリーは６曲。「Better」「Chinese Democracy」「This I Love」「Sorry」「Catcher In The Rye」「There Was A Time」です。本作では、そのうち４曲が極上サウンドで体験できるのです。

つい先日、バンド側から「“NOT IN THIS LIFETIME… TOUR”の最終日は決まっていない。まだまだ続く」とのコメントが発表されたばかり。さらに前座を務めるレニー・クラヴィッツも「まさかアイツらが毎晩、定刻通りにショウを始めるとはね……」と漏らしていました。８月末から９月にかけてアクセルがAC/DCに再合流することになっていますが、それさえも意に介さないほど再編GUNS N’ ROSESは盤石。本作は、そんな充実感に満ちた演奏と歌声が詰まりに詰まった３枚組なのです。いよいよ、本領を発揮し始めたロックの怪物。そのムキ出しのパワー、どうぞ本作で存分にお確かめください。
