これが６月-８月の北米ツアー25公演の冒頭６公演。本作は、リユニオンGUNS N’ ROSESの12公演目、AC/DCから還ってきたアクセルの５公演目にあたります。そんなシカゴ公演を記録してきたのは、なんと日本人の録音家。普段は日本国内で活動している方ですが、「GUNS N’ ROSES復活！」の報に触れ、いても立ってもいられず渡米されたそうです。本作は、その想い、気概が見事にサウンドに乗り移った逸品。貴重な機会を最大限に活かすべく、VIPチケットを入手。しかもステージ正面という“ベスト・シート”で記録されたのです。
そう、本作最大の旨みは「ベスト・シートで体験するリユニオンGUNS N’ ROSES」に他ならない。実際、本作が見事なオーディエンス・サウンドで、大歓声に一切邪魔されない楽音が素晴らしい。「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶような直結感とは違いますが、楽音・歌声ともに図太いままに真っ直ぐ届き、熱い熱狂も真空パックしている。正直な話、開演時には近隣席の話し声や唱和も拾っているわけですが、それが楽音を遮らない。恐らく「ステージ正面のVIP席」という極上ポジションが原因だと思いますが、間近の声援から遠く遠くの歓声までの立体感が凄く、目を閉じるとGUNS N’ ROSESのステージを目の前に観ているかのような現実感が沸々と沸いてくるのです。
そんなリアル・クオリティで描かれるリユニオンGUNS N’ ROSESのショウがまた熱い。リユニオン直後の４公演目（４月）をリポートした『COACHELLA FESTIVAL 2016（Shades 638）』もお届けしましたが、AC/DCを経たせいかアクセルも絶好調。さらに、あの傑作からセットも入れ替わり、『APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION』の「Out Ta Get Me」や『USE YOUR ILLUSION I』の「Don’t Cry」、イギー・ポップのカバー「Raw Power」も披露しています。特に嬉しいのは「Raw Power」。2014年にも何回か演奏されたとは言え、キャリアを通じて10回前後しか演奏していないという激レア・ナンバー。それを日本人特有の繊細さと本場の熱さたっぷりの録音で楽しめるのです。
もちろん、『COACHELLA FESTIVAL 2016』で味わえたリユニオンGUNS N’ ROSESの旨みもしっかり。なにしろ、アクセルの“あの声”とスラッシュの“あのトーン”が絶妙に絡み合いながら超名曲群を「これでもか！」と繰り出していく。実に『APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION』から７曲、『USE YOUR ILLUSION I & II』から10曲の大盤振る舞い。さらに、スラッシュのギターが鳴り響く『CHINESE DEMOCRACY』の「Chinese Democracy」「This I Love」「Better」まで披露する。再編のニュースを聞いたときには「昔の曲だけだろう」と思っていたのですが、まさか、スラッシュが演奏するとは……。これもまた、今回のリユニオンGUNS N’ ROSESだからこその醍醐味です。
