エリック・クラプトン、1998年の「ピルグリム・ヨーロッパ・ツアー」から、序盤のハイライトとなったロンドン、アールズ・コート３日間連続公演の中日、10月16日の極上ステレオ・オーディエンス・ソースを完全収録したのが本盤です。この日はかつてアールズ・コートでの３公演を収めた６CDボックス『ECEC』でリリースされていましたが、そこに収められたものとは完全に別のマスターになります。このたび当店が入手したのは、イギリス在住の提供者からのファースト・ジェネレーション・マスターテープで、ヨーロッパで流通するCD-Rブート・レーベルEC Compilationsがカタログナンバー「040」でリリースしていたタイトルの大元のマスターです。既発盤のマスターとは音の鮮度そのものが違い、演奏部分を聴けばサウンドボード録音かと思ってしまうほどのクリアさと抜群のサウンドバランスを備えています。マスターの時点からMy Father’s Eyesの5:10に音切れがあったのが玉に瑕ですが、この部分は極力違和感のないように巧みに繋いであります。さらにファースト・ジェネのマスターに高品位なマスタリングを施すことで、既発盤からは格段の音質アップを図りました。従って、本盤がこの日の決定版と断言していいでしょう。このツアーからはドラムがスティーヴ・ガッドに代わり、より安定感のあるサウンドになりました。アルバム「PILGRIM」の世界を忠実に再現するため、20人編成のストリング・オーケストラを起用し、さらにアラン・ダービー(元エイジア)、アンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウの二人のギタリストに加え、二人のキーボード、三人の女性コーラスも加えた大編成バンドで臨んだのが本ツアーでした。その気合が伝わってくるような重厚なサウンドが圧倒的な迫力で冒頭から飛び出してきます。それゆえ、このライブの肝は、「PILGRIM」からのナンバーが６曲続いて畳み掛けられる序盤にあったのは間違いないところです。クラプトン自身がOne Chanceの後で「こんなに早くプレイがピークに達するとまずいんだけどね。分かるだろ！」と苦笑いしながらアナウンスしているほどです。アルバムでは打ち込みのドラムだったものが、ガッドの「生きた」ドラムによってどう曲に生命が宿っているか、そのあたりを検証してみるのも一興でしょう。またオーケストラを帯同したツアーだっただけに、アコースティック・セットから後半のエレクトリック・セットでのヒット曲のライブ・アレンジにも注目です。これらのナンバーが、繊細なストリング・オーケストラが被さることでまたいつもとは違った表情を見せています。特にOld Loveでのセンチメンタリズムは究極の姿と言えます。さらにこの日には聴きどころがあり、オープニング・アクトを務めたボニー・レイットと、ロンドンに来ていた御大B.B.キングがアンコールの２曲で飛入り参加しています。二人が参加したため、演奏されたのはブルースでした。ここでのクラプトン、レイット、B.B.の個性際立つソロ回しもブルース・ファンには堪らないところでしょう。この日の最高音質を実現した本盤は、本ツアーを代表するオーディエンス・タイトルに君臨することは違いありません。既発盤をお持ちの方にも認識を新たにしていただきたい決定版タイトルです。Beanoレーベルより完全限定のプレスCDでリリースです。
