今週は、エリック・クラプトンの秘蔵ライブ音源がもう一つ登場します。本盤の音源は、あの伝説のプロモーター、故ビル・グラハムのアーカイヴを保有しているWolfgang’s Vault にアップロードされたもので、ステレオ・セパレートもばっちりのオフィシャル級のサウンドボード・マスターです。2ヶ月に及んだ1978年春の「スローハンド全米ツアー」から終盤に当たった4月5日の、マサチューセッツ州スプリングフィールド公演をサウンドバランスの良いステレオ・サウンドボード録音で収録しています。しかしアップされた本ソースは、数か所の曲間カットに加え、Double Troubleの途中で大幅カットがあるほか、 ラストのアンコールBottle Of Red Wine が未収録という欠点がありました（このサウンドボード・マスターは、基本的に各曲の演奏後すぐにテープが止められています）。しかし今回、当店はカット部分をやはりこちらも最近当店が入手した同日のオーディエンス録音マスターより補填し、よりリアリティのある疑似完全版として作成したものをプレスCD2枚組でお届けします！これまでこの日の音源は一切出てこなかっただけに、クラプトン久々の新発掘の初登場音源、しかもサウンドボード録音ということで非常にインパクトがあるものですが、ここはひとつ、カットがあるままの、なかなか集中して鑑賞できないものを聴いていただくよりも、違和感なく繋がり、断然聴きやすい本盤を是非聴いていただきたいと思います。もちろんピッチも正常です。

前年11月1日にリリースされたアルバム「SLOWHAND」は、第1弾シングルとしてカットされた「Lay Down Sally c/w Cocaine」が全米シングルチャート2位まで上り詰める大ヒットで勢いづき、アルバム自体も全米アルバムチャートで第2位を記録する大ヒットとなりました。その勢いを駆ってのプロモーションツアーがこの全米ツアーでした。この時点では、アルバムに参加したイヴォンヌ・エリマンはソロキャリア進出のためバンドを脱退し、マーシー・レヴィが紅一点となっていました。この布陣での2ヶ月以上に及ぶ長期ツアーだったことを見れば、ここがクラプトンの勝負どころだったと言えるでしょう。マーシーはPeaches and DieselとLaylaの後奏で隠し味的なアコギプレイを添えているほか、Key To The Highwayではお得意のブルースハープを披露するなど、大活躍です。先月のハイド・パークでのステージに飛入りした彼女の姿も思い描きながら聴いてみてください。その後、断続的にツアーは継続されますが、7月で終了、すぐにクラプトンは次作「BACKLESS」のレコーディングに臨みます。そういう意味では、既に本ツアー開始時にはアメリカのファンはアルバムを購入済みで、「SLOWHAND」は大ヒット、その楽曲のライブでの披露を楽しみにしているという状況でした。従ってクラプトンにとっては「アルバムのプロモーション」というよりも、「大ヒット御礼」のツアーという様相を呈していたと言えるでしょう。そして大歓迎された本ツアーの総仕上げとも言うべき終盤に当たっていたのが本スプリングフィールド公演でした。このツアーからは、アメリカのFMライブ番組「キングズ・ビスケット・フラワー・アワー」で放送された2月11日、12日のサンタモニカ公演のステレオ・サウンドボード音源が有名で、それはブートレッグ化もされていますが、本盤はそれとはセットリストとソングオーダーが異なっています。ツアーを進めるうちにクラプトンに変化が現われたことがお分かりいただけるでしょう。この日の本領発揮はオープニング・ナンバーのThe Coreからです。当時、カントリーに傾いたとしてゆるゆるだという評価もあったクラプトンでしたが、こうして聴くとなかなかどうして、「クラプトンはやっぱりクラプトン」です。以降はソフトなナンバーがしばらく続きますが、またCocaineで大爆発。驚くのは、２月11日のサンタモニカでのこの曲ではサビのコーラスをオーディエンスが合唱することもなく、エンディングも拍子抜けして終わっていたのですが、この日はサビでオーディエンスの大合唱。あまりの盛り上がりに演奏後にはクラプトンもお礼を言うほどです。中間のワウワウ・ソロも最高です。ハードなナンバー、ブルースでは弾き捲っているこの日のクラプトンです。Double Troubleの終盤では、自身の奏でるリフに合わせてハミングをしています。乗りに乗っていたことが窺えます。そしてサンタモニカでは後奏をジョージ・テリーに任せたLaylaもこの日は自身でソロ後半を担当。アグレッシヴなフレーズで弾き倒します。これぞ、クラプトン！そう考えれば、有名なサンタモニカ公演よりも本盤の日の方が断然いいかも、です。グレードアップした完全版で聴く「スローハンドツアー」終盤の好盤が本盤です。初回プレスを表すシリアルナンバー入ステッカー付の限定リリースとなりますため、お早めのオーダーをお願い致します。
