Eric Clapton’s treasure live sound source will appear again this week. Three works will be released on press CD, but two of them will be the first public release from the heavyweight tapers living in the UK that our shop trusts, shock master. One of them, the main board, has recorded the Barcelona performance in Spain, November 6, from the “Backless Europe Tour” in the autumn of 1978 with a sound-balanced stereo and audience recording. The sound source of Saarbruck ‘s performance this past two days in the past was uploaded on the net. There, as early as the tour only, as a repertory which can not be heard in the later performance, Golden Ring from the album “BACKLESS” and Walk Out in the Rain from the album had been played and gained evaluation that it is very valuable. In response to the hit album “SLOWHAND”, it was a performance during the Europe tour with the recording of the same British producer, Glynn Johns, by the same producer, with the new work “BACKLESS” released in only 2 months after the end I think that you can see that it was a performance on the second day of the tour. In the era when “Tulsa Tops” was appointed, this tour was the only one who performed live in a 4 piece band. Clapton fans want to listen to this sound by all means. 今週はまたエリック・クラプトンの秘蔵ライブ音源が登場します。3作一挙にプレスCDでのリリースとなりますが、そのうちの2作は当店が信頼するイギリス在住の重鎮テーパーから提供された完全初公開、衝撃のマスターと言えるものです。そのうちの1作である本盤は、1978年秋の「バックレス・ヨーロッパツアー」から、11月6日のスペイン、バルセロナ公演をサウンドバランスの良い、広がりのあるステレオ・オーディエンス録音で収録しています。ネット上には過去にこの2日後のザールブルッケン公演の音源がアップロードされていました。そこではツアー初期のみ、後の公演では聴けないレパートリーとして、アルバム「BACKLESS」からの Golden Ring と Walk Out in the Rainがプレイされていたことで非常に貴重だという評価を得ていました。ところが本盤に捉えられた重鎮のマスターは、正真正銘初登場に加え、それ以上の衝撃的内容だったのです。それを解説する前に、まずここでこのヨーロッパツアーがクラプトンの活動上どのような位置付けになっていたのか、この年のトピックをおさらいしてみましょう。

大ヒットしたアルバム「SLOWHAND」を受けて、同じイギリス人プロデューサー、グリン・ジョンズの制作でレコーディングし、終了後僅か2ヵ月でリリースした新作「BACKLESS」を引っ提げてのヨーロッパツアー中の一公演であったこと、そのツアー開始2日目の公演であったことがお判りいただけると思います。この年を締めくくり、アルバムのプロモーションに大きく貢献する重要なツアーでした。このツアーは、いつもの航空機移動に飽きたクラプトンがヨーロッパならではの趣向ということで発案した、有名なオリエント急行列車を借り切って全公演地を回ったというものでした。オープニング・アクトは、敬愛するブルースマン、マディ・ウォータースにお願いして務めてもらったという、クラプトンにとっては嬉しい状況もありました。新鮮な気持ちでやる気満々だったことが窺えます。このツアーの聴きどころは、アルバムのレコーディング時には在籍していたセカンド・ギタリスト、ジョージ・テリーを解雇し、デレク＆ザ・ドミノス時代と同じ編成の4ピースバンドで行われたことでした。ギターがクラプトン一人になったということは、それだけ彼のパフォーマンスに占める比重、重要度が増したということです。アルコール中毒進行中にもかかわらず、その重責を彼自らが求めたということで、このツアーは注目されたわけです。さらに後になって判ったことですが、セットリストがツアー序盤とそれ以降では大きく異なっていたことも、このツアーの魅力でもありました。前述しましたように、ごく初期の公演のみで、アルバム「BACKLESS」からのナンバーを多く採り上げたのです。中盤以降には当該アルバムからのナンバーは極端に減っていき、オールドブルースや前回ツアーのレパートリーが中心となった、「いつものツアー」といった様相を呈していきます。唯一、新鮮な試みだったのは、Laylaをオープニングに持ってきたり、スティーヴィー・ワンダーのカバー、Loving You Is Sweeter Than Everをセットインさせたりしたことでした。その意味では、本盤のセットリストはクラプトンのライブでもレア中のレアと断言できます！まずはオープニング・ナンバーを見てください。 Someone Like Youなのです。75年に緊急リリースしたシングル盤Knockin’ On Heaven’s DoorのB面に収録されていた無名ミュージシャン、アーサー・ルイスのナンバーです。A面曲をセットインさせず、ファンも忘れているようなこんなマイナーかつマニアックなナンバーでコンサートの幕を開けたのです。この曲のライブ・バージョンが聴けるのは、このツアーのみならずクラプトンの全キャリアにおいても本盤だけと思われます。続けては、イントロをプレイしないBlues Power。これも驚きです。そして Golden Ring や Walk Out in the Rainのみならず、If I Don’t Be There By Morning、I’ll Make Love to Youと、「BACKLESS」からのナンバーを4曲もプレイしています。「隠れた名盤」的に評価の高いこのアルバムのファンにとっては堪らない音源と言えるのではないでしょうか。さらにLaylaの後半では何やらレアな曲をジョイントしてプレイしています。まるで即興で演奏したジャムのようです。このように、11月下旬に終了したこのツアーの最終形から考えれば、イレギュラー尽くしの内容だったことが判ります。しかも貴重度のみならず、音質がいいのです。ドンピカのクリアサウンドとはいきませんが、この時代の平均的なカセット・レコーディングの割りには非常にサウンドバランスが良く、聴きやすい音質です。狂っていたピッチは当店のエンジニアが完璧に修正しています。重鎮テーパーから提供されたマスターを収録し、今週同時リリースされる「Pensacola 1985」については32年の時を超えて日の目を見たものですが、本盤に関しては39年の時を超えてきた初登場音源です。「タルサ・トップス」を起用していた時代で、4ピースバンドでライブを行なったのはこのツアーだけでした。クラプトンファンの方々にはこの音源は是非とも聴いていただきたいと思います。初回プレスを表すシリアルナンバー入ステッカー付の限定リリースとなります。数に限りがございますので、お早めのオーダーをお願い致します。
