The comeback tour in 1974 was the first solo artist for the first time in four years after three years of retirement from the national tour as Derek & the Dominos in 1970. Thanks to Clapton ‘s comeback, the whole country welcomed the amazement, and it took a long – term tour over a month and a half. Because it was positioned as a very important tour on Clarepton’s career, a line recording was attempted with PA table of almost all performances. 74年のカムバック・ツアーは、70年のデレク・アンド・ザ・ドミノスとしての全米ツアーから3年のリタイア期を経て4年ぶりに行なわれた、ソロ・アーティストとしては初めてのものでした。クラプトンのカムバックということで全米は驚喜歓迎し、1ヵ月半に亘る長期ツアーとなりました。クラプトンのキャリア上非常に重要なツアーと位置づけられたため、ほぼ全公演のPA卓でライン録音が試みられました。一方のクラプトンは久しぶりのステージというプレッシャーから逃れるため、アルコールに頼り泥酔して乗り切ったことは有名なエピソードです。そのため、記録として残されているテープには、公演日によって好不調の激しい波が捉えられていました。今回リリースされた三作にも、三作それぞれに「水もの」の危うい、しかしスーパーギタリストたる片鱗を見せるクラプトンがいます。

ジャケットには74年ツアーのかっこよく、珍しいクラプトンのライブ写真を使っています。マニアでもあまり見かけない、最近発掘されたレアな写真はどれも捨て難い！酒に酔いながらもカムバックを成功させたこのツアーがあったからこそ今日のソロ・アーティスト、クラプトンがあったと言えるでしょう。

それでは１作目から紹介しましょう。この7月4日のコロンバス公演は、数あるこの年の全米ツアーのライブ音源の中では最も泥酔の影響が窺えると言ってよい、面白い日です。このツアーのオープニングはチャップリンの「Smile」と決まっていたのですが、この日は酔った勢いで思いついた「San Francisco Bay Blues」をやってしまうという、ハプニングに近いスタートでした。ファンの中には「アンプラグド」の同曲を想起されるかもしれませんが、そんなにきちんとはやっていません（笑）。そしてクラプトン自身「まじめにいくよ。」と言って「Easy Now」を始めるのですが、イントロで大ズッコケ。さらにアコースティックセット明けのメンバー紹介が面白い。女性シンガーのイヴォンヌ・エリマンを「結婚してるけど、美人だろ？」、セカンド・ギターのジョージ・テリーを「ジョージ・・・・ハリスンじゃないよ。」とふざけてみたり、極め付けは自分を「マイ・ネーム・イズ・ロバート・ジョンソン。」と言い切ってしまうほど。まあ、こんなクラプトンには長いキャリアでもめったに会えません。一方でここまで泥酔していても、パフォーマンスがそれほど酷くないところが不思議です。その後のクラプトンからは想像もできない、コメディアンのようなクラプトンに会えるのが「COLUMBUS 0704」です。この三部作すべて高音質サウンドボードで収録されており、既発盤とくらべてもグレードアップした「良い」音で楽しめます。
