わずか11週間・42公演のツアーだけでステージから消えてしまったスーパー・ユニット、EMERSON, LAKE & POWELL。短いツアーだけに詳細な研究が進んでもいるのですが、それでもなお“謎”に包まれた極上ライヴアルバムがプレスCDで復活です。
その“謎のアルバム”とは、かつて「VINTAGE MASTER」と題してギフト公開されたもの。当時のEL & POWELLツアーに関わっていたという業界人から譲られたオリジナル・マスターなのですが、その公演地・日付が不明。マスターに記載がなく、渡された際に訪ねても「覚えていない」だけ。セットリストから、かろうじて「９月22日（19公演目）以降であろう」とは分かっていたものの、それ以外にMCでも地名や会場名を一切口にせず、現在までに知られているライヴ録音と比較してもまったく違う。いつのどこのライヴがまったく分からない謎のライヴなのです。
しかし、いかなる「謎」も価値がなければ路傍の石と同じ。明かされたところで意味がありません。ところが本作は、そのクオリティこそが光り輝く宝石。EL & POWELLの頂点録音と言うと、“1986年９月12日フィラデルフィア公演”の「HEADING FOR GLORY（Virtuoso 091/092）」と“９月16日マンスフィールド公演”の「FABULOUS SHOW（Virtuoso 073/074）」が２大巨頭として知られてきましたが、本作はその２大録音にも匹敵し、堂々と「３大録音」と呼べるハイパー・サウンドなのです！　実際、そのクリア極まりない楽音は、光り輝くサウンドボードのよう。うっすらと会場残響をまとってはいますが、それさえも透き通っており、踊り狂うキース・エマーソンの指先もグレッグ・レイクのゴリゴリ・ベースも、コージー・パウエルのヘヴィなキックも鋭いエッジが微塵も損なわれていない。シンセがスペーシーな世界観を創造し、そこへ歌声は荘厳に響き、重戦車のごときドラムが突進する。この３人にしか描き出せない音世界が見事に広がるのです。
録音が素晴らしいだけでなく、鮮度も絶品。「謎」のマスターだけにジェネレーションも不明なのですが、音を聴く限り、大元マスターか1stジェネとしか思えない。冒頭「The Score」でボリュームを確かめるように音量が（わずかに）変化し、「Pictures At An Exhibition」の4:27でテープチェンジのカットもあるものの、それ以外に欠点らしい欠点がまるでない。歪みもノイズも一切なく、安定感も素晴らしい。いかに名録音とは言え、30年という時間の試練はそうそう超えられるものではありません。しかし、本作は見事にその離れ業をやってのけているのです。
そのクオリティで描かれるEL & POWELLの世界は、まさにキーボード・トリオの桃源郷。もちろん「カール・パーマーよりも云々……」等と野暮なことは申しませんが、唯一無二のエマーソン音楽を一打一打も強烈なビートで突き上げるアンサンブルは、このユニットしかあり得ない。しかも、コージーはただのパワーヒッターではなく、キャリアを通してドラムソロにチャイコフスキーやホルストをテーマにするほどクラシックに精通し、派手な演出をこよなく愛してきた人。それだけに“より劇的に”・“より派手に”の演出はお手のもの。アタックの強いエマーソンの鍵盤と時に渡り合い、時にサポートしてどこまでもドラマティックに彩る。エマーソンが七色に輝く宝石だとすれば、コージーは言わば強力なスポットライト。自身も強烈な光を発しながら、それをぶつけることでエマーソンも目映く輝かせているのですっ！　………少々、興奮して筆が走ってしまいました。申し訳ありません。ただ、そう書きたくなるほど、筆が止まらなくなるほどに、本作のサウンドは美しく、パフォーマンスが眩しい。そういうことなのです。
そんなショウを目の当たりにしたアメリカ人の熱狂も凄い。完全に楽音が掌握しきってはいるものの、そこに沸き立つ大歓声は、間違いなく客席録音ならではのリアリティ。日本では絶大な人気を誇るコージーですが、当時のアメリカではほぼ無名。RAINBOWやMSGはアメリカで苦戦続きでしたし、WHITESNAKEは大ブレイク直前に辞めてしまった。おおよそ「元JEFF BECK GROUPの人」としてコアなロックファンにしか知られていない存在でした。EL & POWELLでも最初は「誰？」という扱いだったのが、ツアーが進むほどに「コイツは誰だ！」に変わっていったそう。本作でも、そんな逸話が１公演に凝縮されたようで、ショウが進むほどに新たなEL&Pサウンドに驚き、熱狂していくのが手に取るように伝わるのです。

謎のベールに包まれた、光り輝く名録音。キースもコージーも既に亡く、もうこのサウンドは二度と現れません。しかし、たった11週間だけとは言え、奇跡のようなユニットはこの地球上に存在した。そして、そこに居合わせた人々を確実に熱狂させていったのです。その貴重にして極上の記録。永遠に残すプレス２CDに封じ込めました。一瞬だったからこそ、目映く激しかったEL & POWELLの真実。ぜひ、この傑作録音で振り返ってください。
