PINK FLOYDによる名盤「狂気」の完全再現ライヴと、RUSHのカバー・ライヴをカップリングした名作がお求めやすくなって復活です。本作に収められているのは、２つのライヴ。ディスク１は、「2005年10月11日アムステルダム公演（オランダ）」で披露された「狂気」の完全再現ライヴで、ディスク２はDREAM THEATERのサイド・プロジェクトCYGNUS & THE SEA MONSTERSによる「2005年９月18日シカゴ公演」です。
まずは、ディスク１。「狂気」の完全再現はオフィシャル・ブートにもなっていますが、そちらはロンドン公演であり、まったくの別ライヴです。当時のDREAM THEATERは、“同会場の連続２公演”では特別なセットリストを用意するのが恒例。METALLICAの「MASTER OF PUPPETS」やIRON MAIDENの「THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST」、DEEP PURPLEの「MADE IN JAPAN」が再現されており、このPINK FLOYD編もその一貫。ただし、「狂気」が再現されたのは２回だけで、１つがオフィシャル・ブートになったロンドン公演、もう１つが本作のアムステルダム公演というわけです。この録音が登場した当時、ネット上でも大いに話題になったものの、オフィシャル・リリースを計画していたマイク・ポートノイによりすぐさまクレームが入り、ネットから姿を消してしまった曰わく付きの録音なのです。
そのサウンドは、まさに「パーフェクト」「極上」の言葉が相応しいもの。クリアさもダイレクト感もズバ抜けており、ほぼサウンドボードとしか思えない。ポートノイが消したがるのも無理からぬ強烈サウンドなのです。そして、DREAM THEATER自身のパフォーマンスもまた「パーフェクト」。さすがにジェイムズ・ラブリエの声質は似ても似つかず、フロイド専門のコピーバンドには及ばないかもしれませんが、演奏はもちろん、ギターの音色、スネアのチューニング、キーボードの音色に至るまで気持ち悪いくらいにそっくりなのです。当時は、敬意に充ち満ちた演奏ぶりは微笑ましくも、「それでいいのか？」と心配になったものです。
そんな「完コピ」の世界ではありますが、やはりライヴならではのムード、リアルな現場感が鮮烈。「METROPOLIS PT. 2」にも参加したテレサ・トマソンのスキャットに沸く観客も素晴らしいですが、一番印象的なのは、実は冒頭。YESの「危機」やGENESISの「幻惑のブロードウェイ」THE WHOの「フーズ・ネクスト」、QUEENRYCHEの「オペレーション・マインドクライム」、RUSHの「2112」等々、さまざまな先人達の名作群がコラージュされたBGMが流れ、ムードを否応にも高めていく。このパートはロンドン公演の公式盤にはないのですが、先人たちへの溢れる敬意と”特別なことが始まる”という予感の混ざったムードが本生100％で味わえる。大した違いには思えないかも知れませんが、これがあることでライヴ本編も「ただの完コピ」ではなく、「敬意の現れ」と素直に感じられるのです。
さて、続くはディスク２。こちはらDREAM THEATERではなく、ポートノイによるカバー・プロジェクトのライヴです。メンバーはポートノイの他、ポール・ギルバート、元CYNICのショーン・マローン、元WATCHTOWERのジェイソン・マクマスターという４人。いずれも名手、テクニシャンで鳴らす猛者ばかりでした。ポートノイは、それまでもTHE BEATLESやLED ZEPPELINのカバー・ライヴを行ってきましたが、ここでのテーマはRUSH。大作好みのポートノイだけあって、「2112」「Cygnus X-1」「Hemispheres」と、超大作ばかりを連発。さらにはラストの「YYZ」も「EXIT…STAGE LEFT」バージョンで、全４曲で50分以上という凝りに凝ったライヴを聴かせてくれるのです。

メタル系ミュージシャンによるカバーというと、とかくお気楽に有名曲を遊び気分で演奏しがち。しかし、そこはDREAM THEATER＆マイク・ポートノイ。やる以上は徹底的に、コピーする以上は完璧を目指している。彼らのルーツを探る以上に、その徹底ぶりが爽快なカバーライヴなのです。Official Bootlegでも聴けない２公演をサウンドボード級の極上クオリティでたっぷりと味わえる２枚組。歴史の闇に埋もれていた輝く名演。ここに復活です。
